Schecter makes some great guitars. I was on the fence about the Nick Johnston sss and bought it after watching a video on this channel and have zero regrets. The build quality is amazing, not even at that price point but just in general. If you are thinking about this guitar I would recommend jumping in because they build some great guitars.

Schecter are really on form at the moment They've always made great stuff, but its nice to see them really branching out to non metal players. Oh man, the Nick Johnston model is insane. I absolutely love that guitar. It plays so well and it sounds fantastic. The Van Nuys guitars are pretty much the same quality. They're more or less the same spec and they're made in the same factory, and they also sit at the same price point.

I bought two Van Nuys guitars. Both had microphonic problems in the bridge hum bucker. I liked the single coils enough to go back the second time. I called Schecter and they agreed the bridge was microphonic and said they would send me a new one. They did. Over one hundred dollars to my local luthier later and that pickup was also microphonic. I have more than a few guitar with humbuckers. I can crank them and stand next to my amps without a problem. Not with the Van Nuys. It squeals like a stuck pig and is worthless to play. If you don't play with high gain it's ok. So I'm just warning any who buy it. Be prepared to buy a new (non schecter) hum bucker for the bridge. Everything else works fine.
@bobbychubb6913 Жыл бұрын
Haven't had that problem but I don't play very high gain an angry charlie is as high gain as I go . I've thought about getting this one for the single coil sound . I have the PT and I gig with it regularly but I must say the pickups are not exactly what I'm looking for but the guitar itself is awesome. I noticed that when I switched to single coil the volume drops off a little to much.
@TheOldFlyguy Жыл бұрын
Well, I liked the look and the build enough to go back to the well again. I bought another Van Nuys. The HSS model. I cranked it at GC to make sure the pickups were ok. They were so I'm not saying 'every' pickup or model has the problem. Same thing happened with the Jack Fowler model. I took my Van Nuys and replaced the bridge with a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom and the guitar totally ROCKS. I love it. I'm just not as impressed with their pickups more than anything. Great builds, designs but not as impressed with their pickups. Good thing is at the price for most of their guitars adding different pickups is still with in the budget.
@mishswb4950Ай бұрын
What do you mean by Microphonic? Seems to be a key word here
@TheOldFlyguyАй бұрын
@@mishswb4950 For me a comparison would be when you play a hollow body guitar loud next to an amp (especially with gain) the guitar starts to howl and squeal. Pickup can do the same. The noise overtakes the music. I don't know how else to describe it.

Insightful review! My schecter nj is great however it feels really acoustically dead which makes the pickups sound sorta boxier. Acoustically is yours better than your nj?
@LeighFugeGuitar Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking it out. I don’t own the Van Nuys, I only had it on loan from Schecter for a demo, but I do own a Schecter NJ and mine is very, acoustically lively. It’s my go to Strat style for gigs!
@tenebroruncr4374 Жыл бұрын
After having it for eight months now, I discovered the same thing as you. Compared to my Fender Strats, which I have several and some of which are very good, I realized that it doesn't sound the same.It lacks that brightness and body that Fender gives you, the pickup doesn't matter.
@guyincognito320 Жыл бұрын
@@tenebroruncr4374 put a blocker on the trem, the one that's a brass l-brace with a grub screw. It'll be extremely alive acoustically with that contact point. (Assuming this is a two-way bullshit trem and not a fender style dive-only one)

I found that the Van Nuys pickups were a little hotter, more 80s vibed - which was exactly what they were going for. The NJs are more Straty. The Van Nuys singles are fatter sounding I think

I've been looking for something I can use to conjure up classic fender ish tones and also thick humbucker rock tones. I'm hoping this is the ticket for me because I just ordered one. I'm hoping the pickups are decent because they're actually schecter usa pickups apparently but I imagine I might end up putting a fender pickup at the neck position possibly we will see.

Would you preferred this over the Nick Johnston HSS?
@LeighFugeGuitar2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Good question… both guitars are more or less the same price and made in the same factory. From what I remember, they felt pretty much the same too. Both are great. The NJ SSS version has become my favourite Strat style and since I got one I’ve used it for everything. The Van Nuys is also a killer guitar. The biggest differences are the looks. The VN is more 80s superstrat and the NJ is more traditional.
@ferramirez46683 жыл бұрын
How does it compare to the Nick Johnston? And which do you prefer?
@LeighFugeGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Great question. They are both made in the same factory and sit at around the same price point, they both feel pretty similar. The NJ is definitely more of a vintage vibe tone, that has pickups that were voiced to Nicks specifications. The Van Nuys pickups are a little hotter, more 80s rock based. Playing wise, both guitars feel very similar. I personally prefer the NJ, but both are fantastic!
