Prisons require clear lines so that you can see an approach or an escape for some distance. Trees would be cut down for up to the effective fire range of the rifle utilized. Something close to 500 yards depending on the rifle platform, and the skill level. An unscalable wall would be used if the distances couldn't be utilized. This is why prisons are not built within city limits anymore. They are often built on the outside of the city limits and can be seen for miles. Also jails are for sentences for 1 year or less, prisons are for sentences of more than 365 days.

The old (and now turned into a museum) prison in Horsens, Denmark is a wonderful example. Built about in the middle of the 19th century, it was built on a hill. You can still clearly see it when you approach the town from the north or west; to the east and south the town’s encroached on it. But it still has a substantial amount of land, and it’s frequently used for large-scale events.

@@CityPlannerPlays the design of the prison in the game is a within city limits type prison. High limestone walls are very crica early 1900 prison ie the bloodiest prison west of the Mississippi. Missouri state penitentiary. At least in Kansas county jails are required to be located within the city limits of the county seat.

As a person who worked in a prison for 15 years, I have to say (for realism) there would be absolutely no foliage around the prison when that prison is in an industrial area. The sight lines are broken and obstructed by soooo many places for people to hide (people attempting to throw contraband over the fence; people attempting to breach the fences while prisoners are out during yard exercise). Trees (very few) would be permitted at the front of the building for the general public but nothing behind or around the sides. Also, too close to a highway (fast get away for escapees).

Being introduced to the DLCs in this way, showing how you implement and upgrade old parts of the city as you use new features and grow in population is exceptionally helpful. Cheers!

Where the highway met that four lane road, you could try converting the highway segments to asymetric roads so there's a dedicated lane for turning and one for straight. Also, the big problem with the traffic is that the segments by the fountain/future casino are too short so only a few cars get to go when the light is green.

I feel like a blimp stop and bus terminal in the new tourism/leisure district would serve extremely well. You might want to add a police, fire, and hospital Also pad the bottom by the wind mills with office space, or upgrade to solar. I like the piers, but thought they would be better on the opposite side of the beach by the hotels. Wish they had a beach park in the park life dlc, would be nice to see sun bathers, tiki bars, boardwalks etc. I totally summer in Mill Side hills, tourism district should be Millside Crest

Important Tip mainly for vanilla players. The Tourism has more buildings than what was shown here. You have.. 4 more Hotels with one being a variant colour (blue/white). Irish Pub , Swiming Pool , Outdoor Gym, Sun Lounger Area, Hippy Cafe made out of shipping crates, beach cafe, cafe tables, Grill cafe and a few more i think. To get these to spawn they must be near water, if your Tourism isn't close enough to the water then you can cheese it by terraforming to run some water to where your tourism is located and then save the buildings that spawn as 'historic' and then undo what you terraformed and you will have the other (imo nicer) Tourism buildings. You can 'kind of' make your own custom hotel complexes by mixing them up and detailing around them. Merry Christmas City Builders :)

While I love that you build with realism and stick to real life codes and ordinances, I would love to see a build or an episode where you build according to the codes and ordinances you believe make better communites. What would communites look like if you didn't have to deal with all the beaurocratic limitations? Like at 48:20 you said mixed use zoning isn't a very realistic but you do include it in some communites. I would like to see a whole build where you bend the rules to your heart's content. It would be amazing to see a build that disregards the policies you think really hinders communities. Also, I think it would be really interesting if you explained why doing things the way we do doesn't make sense.

FWIW: In most of Europe it's illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk, unless you're on a kiddie bike (so basically only small kids may use the sidewalk for biking) and if there is a bike path you HAVE to use it and in some cases can be fined if you ride anywhere else. That said, every country has its own regulation, like how and whether you're allowed to ride on paths shared with pedestrians differ between countries, but in general pedestrians have the right of way. Also be aware that this game is made in Finland and most of its systems are a mix between European and American principles

It's really nice seeing all the bikelanes in the city! Also, in the Netherlands we have quite a lot of biketunnels crossing underneath roads, usually with bigger roads. So that might be a solution in some places. Within the cities we don't really prioritize cars at all, cyclists and pedestrians are considered equal, or even more important than them. And roundabouts. Lots of roundabouts lol. It's fun to see the difference

Rather than closing that through road in front of the planned casino. I hope you just connect it back and make 2 new bus loop (1 from downtown transit center to casino, circle park, and ferry; another one is one loop for both the suburbs sprawl to connect to the other bus loop and some commercial in the area). Another thing is change the sub connection to the casino to include stop on forest park and another one between the ferry and circle park.

38:10 I think something that is often (but not always!) overlooked is the spacing of the junctions. You can see the vans stopping once the short segment fills up, even though the light is still green. Maybe a one way couplet would work better around the monument?

@25:00 So wiseass comment here but bike infrastructure contributes to your city's/country's economy though in a great way so I find it somewhat reasonable that there's no extra cost associated with that (I mean that you can't look at the cost of the road in isolation). But it would be really nice to have a mechanic in the game that sort of calculates the road construction/maintenance cost to be higher but then benefits your commercial that is adjacent to it by a multiplier - I don't believe there is such a connection in the game now, I'd be amazed if there is? IRL walkability and bike use does result in higher commercial use much more than cars, at least that's what research tends to show. Not to talk about reduced cost in healthcare etc...

I think a one way collector coming into and going around the fountain in your tourism district would have been a cool idea to disperse some traffic. In that case I would have made a one way coupling instead of the 4 lane road you had T'ing into the fountain (you could have added bike infrastructure in the median) with a one way loop into the district and around the fountain, hope this makes sense. Also I think expanding the grid in that area and more local connection to outside the community, plus getting rid of that toll booth (you might do that, the video isnt over lol) would really help disperse trips onto other roads. Awesome video/series! Thank you for the awesome content you provide, it is really appreciated. I always feel like I learn something watching your videos, and it makes the experience so awesome. I just got a PC and downloaded my hometown city map (Halifax NS) and I was wondering if you could do a tutorial/more videos like the one you did on Venice, Florida. Man, my commute to college became so much better when they added a bike lane on the collector I had to travel on. I had to choose between riding a collector where people typically went 45-ish mph and we're often hostile vs the sidewalk of said collector, which isn't exactly safe and significantly slowed me down at every driveway. They also banned bikes on sidewalks around downtown. It makes sense given how busy the sidewalks were. It was a pretty small portion of the town, but it totally made sense and at least they had the decency to add bike lanes through there.

I know this is old now but I'm kinda predicting what should be done as I'm learning this. A good half or more of all that traffic out to the leisure/tourist districts are trucks with goods. A train from the industrial districts alone might ease up a massive chunk of that traffic. Also them blimps might be a solid way of getting tourists from the freeway on the other end of the city down there and would be very touristy in theme. Those two things alone might cut traffic by a good 60% or more. Maybe another ferry route, or multiple ferrys from the highway all the way down, and then some cable cars directly from the ferry to the district. It's almost like there's two games here. One is building the city, and the other half (or more) is traffic optimization. And hopefully the sewage waste filtration gets moved soon now that all the beach tourist centers are there. That's gotta be a smelly place to jet ski and play volleyball.

Seems to me there would be fewer people driving into the new neighbourhood if there were better bus and ferry connections. As it stands in order to take a ferry you have to get to the Zoo first. Overall it seems like the road connection was appropriate, but it was over used because it was essentially the best way to get there, because the transit connections are too limited.

A better option to help the power jump to the prison may have been a road maintenance facility. Not sure which which dlc that is included in, but road crews in the US are often staffed by inmates and it would make sense to have it next to the highway as well.

The prisons that I am familiar with in my area are out in the open, far away from any forested areas, (I live in the PNW) I always thought this was for security - easier to see an escapee if they have a wide field to cross before they get to cover. Maybe I am wrong, but tucking a prison in a well "concealed" space seems like a bad idea at least in real life.

Was there a reason no public transportation was added between the ferries and cable cars to the tourism and leisure area? Like a bus or something? I feel like that may have encouraged more use of the ferries there instead of the road. Or do the ferries take cars too?

Kingston, Ontario, has 7 "Correctional Facilities", two federal correctional service buildings, one provincial (a.k.a. state) correctional service building, and three museums (one of which was a Maximum Security Penitentiary that closed only 5 years ago and 'might' reopen again after they finish upgrading it). Two of the Pens are located on major roads (Arterials?) and look like Castles. Where I come from, People do get warm and fuzzy about prisons. 🙃

I know I'm quite a few eps behind, but would it not be worth using one of the terminals at the giant train station to link up the tourist district with less transfers?

haha as always enjoy videos and every video there is something you say that jumps out as america, it is usually about public transportation, having a US centric view of it haha, this time it was about the prison being in a place people do not want to see, and immediately thought about ones inside towns and cities because of historical location and development prior to the existence of cars. as soon as you said it a few popped into my mind haha

How about a direct bus connection from the ferry to the leisure district? could encourage more utilisation of the ferry and get some traffic off the roads.

Not sure what the end game is for this series but I think it’d be cool to have an episode where you bring in all the content creator packs and add some of them throughout. Also, I’ve been playing this game since it came out but I love watching this series-I can still learn things and it’s just entertaining lol

Not sure if these comments are read anymore but I'm going through the tutorial stage by stage. On the issue of traffic congestion to the leisure / tourist area, instead of a metro (which I always struggle with) I put in a monorail, and my congestion dropped down (or up) from 79 to 94!. But I'm getting a lot of abandonment and 'not enough goods / workers' notifications ion the leisure / tourism site. Ideas? And I've never got the cool tall tower blocks in the area in spite of allowing highrises. But enjoying .. !

Dense vegetation around a prison doesn't keep the prisoners in. It makes it easier for them to hide from security sweeps and escape. Prisons usually opt for much longer sight lines so less guards are needed to survey the surrounding landscape. Granted, this is why prisons are more likely in rural areas.

I've been considering getting the game next time I see it on sale, and I am quite enjoying your walkthrough overview of the game and its DLCs. Watching this episode I feel compelled to inquire; given that a tourism/leisure district is a pretty solid visitation hub, might having a train/metro hub be a solid mass transit connector for such an area? You have the ferries, true, but they're sot of a roundabout way of getting there, especially since the ferries seem to be pedestrian only, so that's a fairly long walk to the leisure district that way. You have a single metro stop here if memory serves, but that's a pretty long round trip depending on how many passenger trains you currently have active. Given the large apparent visitation drive of the districts, more dedicated mass transit options feels like a good idea since the tolls are, as you pointed out, not discouraging anyone from going by car. (Yes, I'm aware this series is likely finished as I type this, but I wanted to give my thoughts with the current build in progress given the methods you had tried using in this video.)

You might want to rethink all those trees around that prison. There's a county jail in the median of I-95/Route 128 Southwest of Boston and there are no forests to block the view and there's a loop road high security fences around the jail keeping the inmates in. But there is a line of trees next to the fence.

It's kind of funny that the ferries, when they turn inward, it's like it's going to crash into the piers. They could've made them back up then make their turn and on their way.

A bridge, yeah, but I use MoveIt! afterwards to drop each node back to the surface, so it just looks like a fenced path. I just don't like the idea of my Cims plunging to their deaths.

There's some nice walkable quays on the Workshop, Shane. I use one called something like Cement walkable Quay. It has a built in fence, too, but only on the outside. Works nice for boardwalks. The raised paths put fences on both sides.

Since I'm from Europe, the way you talk about biking feels so weird. Because in europe you can bike pretty much everywhere and until like when WW2 happened, everything was also build quite around the bike, afterwards since it had to be built up quick again cause of the destruction, bike-lanes were less of a priority, but in the majority of smaller towns dedicated and separate (more importantly) bike and pedestrian lanes Curbwalks, are the more common site, than painted on bikeways on streets.
