Fascinating ! We lived in Tennant Street until 1956 when we moved away. My father worked in the docks most of his working life.

My family were from there too and they worked in the naval construction industry (that was the biggest business in the area so I guess most people did). Poverty there in the 1800's was extreme, they faced a lot of hardships But my family took a chance and a leap of faith and boarded a ship to the colonies looking for a better life, they sending people to America for workforce. Doing that was always difficult because that meant you probably would never see the rest of your family again, and Europeans back then we're more family knitted and European families were more numerous and close I would love to find and meet relatives of mine in Scotland one day

The photo at 2:37 brought back memories. In the early sixties, I was a member of the East of Scotland Clarion cycling club based in the Kirkgate. Our clubrooms were directly above Burton the Tailor. That property is long gone but, at least, Trinity House is still standing.

Whilst researching family history I found some ties to Leith, a paddle steam boat crew member performed in mid 1800s a successful rescue on the harbour of Leith. Later the same crew member became a highly noted paddle steam boat Captain and owner on the Hunter River of NSW, Australia. Noted for performing numerous rescues throughout his nautical career, he later became a hotelier in Newcastle NSW, Australia.
