Leith1924

This is a short film showing conditions in Leith in 1924. Leith, like most other parts of urban Scotland was suffering from the downturn following the First World War. Social conditions and housing was poor. Unemployment was high. The Leith Improvement Plan attempted to tackle some of the worst areas of Leith through demolition and moving people from the densely populated areas. This film shows Leith through a series of photographs that were taken at that time as evidence of the conditions that existed. these photographs are now held in the University of Edinburgh archives.

Keep history alive..these pictures speak a thousand words..this is my ma and Das Era..they sprung from Glasgow tenements ..tough rough strong salt of the earth people..hard life's...these children lived through depressions wars ..hunger..extreme cold..still beautiful smiling faces...

Love this! How touching …these people in our neighbourhood (not even so long ago) had it pretty tough by the looks but they stuck together and were just getting on with it and smiling too ❤️
