Lemmings was such a classy product; simple at its heart, it had addictive gameplay and oodles of charm. If you examine the graphics, they are very simple, with good artistic talent to create a pleasant visual effect, and they still look good today because of that. These charming graphics, along with the fantastic music and appealing sound effects, are a great accompaniment to the solid gameplay. One of the very best games on the Amiga, and it was a smart move to include it in the Cartoon Classics pack. It greatly impressed me at Christmas 1991; our previous computer had been the Commodore 16 or plus 4 I think, and not regularly used in the years immediately preceding the Amiga. I was probably a bit young for it and didn't understand it well enough, but it certainly didn't command my attention the way the Amiga would. I wasn't all that interested in computers before we got the Amiga; the Atari 2600 had provided a lot of fun a few years earlier, and as I say I played on the 16 or plus 4 a bit. I was quite fascinated by the conversations I heard at school between friends who owned Amstrads, Spectrums and C64s, and I enjoyed one or two games on my mate's NES, but I wasn't very aware of what computer systems were available or what they could do. I'm not sure I even knew what an Amiga was, even though the 500 had been out for 4 years before our Dad unveiled the brash red box of the Cartoon Classics pack.

So innovative. There was nothing remotely like this game, when this game came out. I just saw a DOS version video 10 minutes ago, and the Amiga is better. I never had the money to own one, but a friend did, and it was the best computer for games at that point in time near as I can tell.

@amcadam263 жыл бұрын
The crazy thing is tha Amiga cost five times less than PC at the time. It was only when games went 3D with Wolfenstein and Doom that the PC became more of a games machine as more owners bought soundblaster sound cards and SVGA graphics cards. The Amiga was amazing at everything 2D and was good for desktop publishing and 3D design too, but fell down on complex floating point 3D math needed for first person shooter games.
@bighands692 жыл бұрын
@@amcadam26 The Amiga was great value for money and had more offerings of games due to their being a wider audience for gaming and a better commercial gaming market. But not for one moment was Amiga gaming more powerful than DOS.
@mattx54992 жыл бұрын
@@KaedeAnimation I think that America was more about console gaming back then and Europe had huge computing tradition that started with Spectrums. Then people switched from their 8-bit computers to 16-bit ones and the Amiga was the most capable. The other thing is that the demoscene, public domain culture was huge in Europe and having the most capable machine was a thing more important than game franchises. The most ambitious games of the 16-bit era were released by European studios.

Gunzee what were the issues with the Simpson’s? Could never get passed the museum level but don’t remember the game having problems
@Gunzee5 жыл бұрын
MrtheChief1 hi mate, the game was the issue. In certain areas, the cement bit on the second stage for example. You needed pixel perfect jumps. Same with the cop/security guard & dog on the first stage. I think it you missed the guard you couldn't complete the stage. There was stuff that made no sense, using the spray cans, sometimes it took 1 little tap to colour a huge part. Other times you'd finish half a can. The items needed clues, how were you supposed to know where to use the whistle? It needed further development and fixes. It was clear a very small team made the game and had no one play test it.
@MrtheChief15 жыл бұрын
Gunzee Ah, well I took those issues you mentioned as just being part of the games’ character, what made it interesting and challenging. I enjoyed playing it. Having said that, I was only 6 years old when I first played this 🤷🏼♂️

@@Gunzee Having to jump off the skateboard and reverse and almost slide under the barrier on the first level. I was eight when I got the game. 31 years later I still remember the anger I used to feel trying to work that nonsense out. On other platforms you just jumped over the barrier simply but no; not the Amiga version.

My Dad played through the whole game, but I always got overwhelmed part way into the "taxing" levels. I'd get stumped on a level when they just didn't give you enough diggers or builders to reach the goal. As a teen, I didn't have my Dad's patience to keep trying over and over. But I clocked Lemmings 2, in which there is only about a dozen really vexing levels, and the rest just take a bit of trial and error. It also helped that you could switch to a different tribe if you got stuck, and come back to the level later. (I finished Christmas Lemmings too, and New Years Lemmings, if I'm not misremembering it's existence.) For this video, I skipped to Mayhem to see how they're done, and many of them seem very simple (once you know how to do them!)
@Tom.Livanos4 жыл бұрын
Great upload bro. The level that I got stuck on (yes, I still remember after all these years) was Level 19 of Tricky. It begins at 2:15:16. The 'climbing' power was used on a lemming which was used as a trailblazer i.e. by climbing the little wall at the beginning. What I was/am unable to figure out is why this lemming does not climb up at the 2:16:07 mark when the steps have been completed. Any (intelligent) reply/replies welcome.

whenever a builder hits a wall he stops and turns around, no matter if he's a climber aswell or not :)
@Tom.Livanos4 жыл бұрын
@@DaChEaTa Yeah, I since went and looked at other climbers in the video. You are correct. It is actually very rare to need a climber who is then used as a builder. I think it happened about four or five times in this six hour video. Oh well, it may have taken the best part of three decades but the mystery for me is finally solved! Thanks for replying.

I believe all the 6's is replaced by Ohayo Lemming San in the SNES version. Also, Genesis versions added tons of levels. Level 14: Room with no exit Level 15: Tea time in the ball country Level 16: Take a little rest. Seems like the methods aren't changed between any versions so far.

@jdsimp41793 жыл бұрын
cracked versions & pirated copies have this audio scratchy. Unless you had some high-tech copying disk drive, that was successful in copying games(remember x-copy pro?), at the time - lemmings would always come out like that. In todays age(2020+), there is such a device that can actually do this, successfully, it costs, but it works. it copies the exact image of the disc, regardless of copy protection on it, and creates a copy of it, on another blank floppy disc. the other method is, which I think is the best option, in this day and age, is disc device, that copies the image of any disc, and creates an image file of it, so it can be used/usable on the very famous PC utility - Amiga Forever ! by Cloanto. it would be very nostalgic, to go back to the early days of game-playing, when you weere younger.

You have a bad dusk image with some corruption which is why one of those samples sound like white noise. Now I can tell you with 100% certainty that this wasn't a cracking issue. The original didn't do this and neither did the crack, but somewhere along the line, someone corrupted something and this is the one that everyone seems to be using.
