In '68, I was an Army medic. Nearly all the medics then were hippies, and we had the longest hair & mustaches in the Army & no one knew our ranks because we wore white uniforms with no insignias that weren't easy to sterilize. No one pulled rank or gave us any shit because everybody's a potential patient! Heh-heh! I had my wife take one of those 'whites' pants & sew them into my jeans to make bell-bottoms for me. Off duty, we'd smoke hash, drop acid and do strange things in the German countryside, or even in town! Even the German hippies couldn't tell we weren't German, but we made friends and conversed in English, listening to music like 'Green Tamborine' and other American stoner music. That rock-and-roll era produced the most awesome music for hippies! This song takes me back to those amazing days... ...must be a flashback!

lol. My brother inlaw was stationed in Germany in '68. He married my sister and she lived with him out there. They were always super straight. My brother in law used to talk about how he hated that "purple music" the hippy soldiers would play. I could never figure out if what he meant was "Deep Purple" or "Purple Haze". Which was is? Did you play a lot of Deep Purple music or was it Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze. I'm thinking it had to be Jimi that freaked him out so much. btw they are still in a 50's time warp and still together.
@SIMKINETICS9 жыл бұрын
Thebe Bashaleebee It could be either because both were contemporaneous to the late '60's. Fun fact: I attended Hendrix's last concert on Fehmarn Island just days before he died. We drove from near Frankfurt to the Baltic Sea (in Germany) to see Jimi do his last gig. Jimi Hendrix was a guitar god to us! Another fun fact: Purple Haze originally was a grade of acid that was spiked with a trace of Belladonna, a strong poison that allegedly produces a purple cast to the vision of one who partakes. The practice of making Purple Haze was dropped because it was too dangerous, too sensitive to dosage. Most likely though, the name comes from purple-colored tablets of LSD that circulated in the Bay Area back then. We medics were acutely aware of pharmacological side-effects because some of us were pharmacists before being drafted, and most of us attended to drug-related medical emergencies... I have many stories that would shock most people.

I was 12 years old when this came out. It was so simple that it stuck in yer brain, i was too young and dumb to try to make sense of the lyrics. Of course the times were simpler also. I didn't have a care in the world other than being in 7th grade. Still watching cartoons but the females of our skool was taking up more of my thoughts. I'd noticed them for quite a while but now they were developing these curious bumps on them that required more investigation. So i became sherlock holmes and began a full time inquiry into what they were, looked like, and most of all just what did they feel like. I'm 63 now and my quest continues. As they say, "the difference between men and boys is the size and price of the toys". Damn if they ain't expensive, but that's the price of knowledge. If you've seen one ya gotta see them all.

Bill Bartlett on guitar created the iconic intro to "Black Betty" with Ram Jam. Kasenatz-Katz produced. It's the ringtone on my phone for good reason. Pat Martin/WSPT; Tom Evans/KISD. 1977 Blast from the past history.

I was born in 1942 and I believe the 60s and 70s were the greatest era of music ever. Listen to the canned music in stores. It is almost invariably 70's music. I was in a store listening to a familiar song from the 70s and realized that was 50 years ago and I was 80.

What awesome and fun memories this brings back. Oh my gosh, we did have a good time in the 60s and 70s. I wasn't into the whole hippie thing but we had parties and danced always.
