What i LOVE about Dick Cavett, is that he actually had CONVERSATIONS with his guests; not asking SCRIPTED questions about the moment, trying to sell something! NOTHING like today's "talk shows" where the guest gets 3-5 minutes to advertise a movie or tv show. THIS LENA HORNE interview, Bette Davis, Kate Hepburn, George Cukor, etc. is CLASSIC CONVERSATIONS.

Aretha Franklin was Lena Horne’s role model… I feel like that is exactly what I needed to hear thanks for the post.

That is my late grandmother all day long. She looked exactly like Lena Horne and was as icy as a January storm. She was cold but showed her love in little ways, like baking my favorite desserts or playing with my arm as I sat next to her in church. This makes me miss her, thanks for posting.

5:00 beautiful expression of her own wish to come out to be free, as "Aretha" was in her singing. This touched me so, how she had been locked in trying not to act like a stereo-typical black woman, and so she was SO reserved for years! I love it that she has told this to us. And Cavett seems so obtuse! He can't even put her at ease in the vulnerability she is showing us

My dad was from the WW2/depression generation- she was his celebrity crush, he used to go on and on to my mum's chagrin. I also interviewed a bandleader in Vancouver BC who knew Lena well, so well in fact that Lena taught his daughter how to pop her chewing gum.

If you watch her PBS documentary she says that she did not consider herself to be a great singer but more of a performer with which I would have to agree.She has a reputation for being unapproachable even in social situations with her own people where they gathered for talk and exchange.Her first husband was a "civil rights lawyer" with whom she did not stay.She eventually married a "white man" .Later she stated she wanted to be with someone that could "command respect".On the outside looking in it saddened me to be reminded that "white" America cares nothing for a man's character ..only his color.It must have very hurtful for "black men "to hear that.
@richardbullis62635 жыл бұрын
Her first husband was not an civil rights lawyer he tried to run for office and lose. He was a mail carrier and her son Teddy became a drug addict. Teddy did finish college but died because of a kidney transplant. Her daughter Gail Buckley married Sidney Lumet and had two daughters by him.
