Too many parents, especially black parents in our community, have a very dysfunctional and toxic idea what it means to be a parent. You can’t force someone to believe what you believe. JESUS IN BIBLE DIDN’T EVEN DO THAT. Jesus INVITED people to follow Him; he DIDN’T force them. AND Jesus IS A REFLECTION OF GOD, who God IS to his core. Her slapping that child WAS HER EGO, that had NOTHING to do with God and God’s love. I wish believers would understand that! @@SnowLeopardForever Let’s be clear here: the slap wasn’t about stifling her child’s ideas or ego; it was about teaching respect and accountability. In every household, especially one grounded in faith and discipline, children need to understand that freedom of speech doesn’t equal freedom from consequences. The Bible itself speaks of honoring one’s parents (Exodus 20:12), and that means knowing when to voice your thoughts and when to remain respectful. She wasn’t slapped for having opinions, but for mouthing off in a disrespectful manner. Disrespect to an elder or authority figure, particularly in a home where faith is practiced, crosses a line that needs correction. You don’t learn respect for others in a vacuum; you learn it from those who guide you. And yes, while Jesus invited people to follow him, He also flipped tables when people showed blatant disrespect in the temple (Matthew 21:12-13). Jesus wasn’t passive in the face of disrespect, so the notion that being a believer means perpetual tolerance of insolence is misguided. This slap wasn’t a reflection of ego, it was a reflection of parental duty to guide, correct, and discipline.

If you are in your mother’s home who knows God, you better never fix your lips to speak in this way. Her mother even held her composure but she just kept going. It’s one thing to not believe, it’s another to disrespect someone who does, especially your parent. Don’t come with the parents shouldn’t raise their children in their religious beliefs. If you want to condemn yourself, do that but don’t tell others how to raise theirs.

Out of the entire script in this scene however, beneatha seemed the most “switched on” in weighing on her options. The godly women simply said “he’s rich” she replied “he’s shallow” her values are in check. She wants to be a doctor before settling on marriage? Another self acclaimed value in check. Mother lost it because she didn’t like what she said in regards to her own beliefs, that she herself knows her daughter isn’t privy to. So why respond to her by inserting him in conversation? I agree not to be in anyone’s space disregarding their way of life. But don’t instigate a discourse either. It’s just as disrespectful to keep mentioning him in the eyes of a non-believer. For both parties. Especially if their belief system goes beyond fixed scripture.

I am a believer in God but slapping her was wrong. That was NOT Christian behavior. Basically, she slapped her child having thoughts and ideas of her own. Children are NOT OBJECTS that parents own. AND those RELIGIOUS folks AREN’T at all Godly, they were going on about shallow and materialistic things - like money and status while the child was not and didn’t care about those things.

Let’s be clear here: the slap wasn’t about stifling her child’s ideas or ego; it was about teaching respect and accountability.
