We have the same rankings! Even though The wrong trousers has Gromit feeling cast out, and Wallace left to a betrayal of sort, I think A close shave does it much better. Gromit imprisonment was so emotional and Wallace love interest actually captivating. On top of this, Feather's character is very good but is compared to Preston a rather one-dimensional bad guy while Preston is actually quite sad. The ending scene where he is "nice" again actually got to me as a kid. Adding to this, the mystery and thrill of the robbery and genius of the train chase in all it's glory, A close shave finale is BRILLIANT. The truck heist with all the sheep, the near death experiences over and over again, Gromit's plane is one of the most iconic pieces in a Wallace and Gromit flick, the porridge canon, Preston's reveal, the final treadmill run. A Close Shave is masterclass.

I strongly agree with you about "a matter of loaf and death." it's really good and wraps up nicely, like all the wallace and gromit items, but it just felt like there was so much more they _wanted_ to add, and couldn't because they didn't have the backing of dreamworks. it's still great; just, all the other wallace and gromit productions are _even better._ the opening scene alone where they go through wallace's "rube goldberg" machine to dress them for work, pour them coffee, and even crank up their motorcycle for them was so much fun to watch and another fine example of wallace's slothfulness XD

Every once in a while I get the urge to rewatch all of Wallace and Gromit so here I am at the tail end of one such urge. I’m pleasantly surprised by how close our rankings are! I would put Cracking Contraptions last (it’s cute but I like a cohesive story better than vignettes), and The Wrong Trousers above A Close Shave purely for nostalgic reasons (being the first one I ever saw)- but I will say, when I first rewatched A Close Shave as an adult, it instantly became my favorite for a while! I think I was too frightened of it as a kid to properly appreciate how great it is, especially since there was a lot I didn’t remember about it, including that awesome car chase/plane ride scene at the end. I fully agree with what you said about A Matter of Loaf and Death- it should have been a feature film. When I first saw it I thought it was too dark in tone as well, but now the pacing is my only real problem with it. Everything happens so quickly!

i audibly gasped when you put the wrong trousers at number 2, i thought i was the only one who liked 'a close shave' the most!! gosh, when i was a child i loved all of the wallace and gromit animations (excluding matter of loaf and death bc it wasn't out yet haha) but i would always ask my parents my parents to play a close shave the most. i called it 'the one with the sheep and the weird slime.' that said, i dont think animation has ever made me laugh in complete humor, joy, and shock than when gromit picked up those spare tracks in the wrong trousers. it was genius!

Although i dont and cannot deny that all the other shorts were great in their own ways (Close Shave introducing a fun new character in Shaun, and Wrong Trousers giving us the best villain), Matter of Loaf and Death is my personal favorite. Yes, it was short and felt a bit off at some points (Like how Gromit and Fluffles escaped with the Balloon even though less than a minute ago in the running time Gromit was thrown into the storage room.), but i think it did an amazing job with enough storytelling for it to be completely understandable within 30 minutes. The jokes were genuinely funny and didn't seem out of place. My favorite part of the story is that they did a twist with the series where Gromit had a love interest in Fluffles. It was an amazing moment to see her stand up to her owner and save Wallace when Gromit couldn't, and in the end, with no where else to go, joined Wallace and Gromit, who welcomed her into their delivery van to deliver more bread. I hope to see more of her in future Wallace and Gromit projects, or at least know what happened to her if they decide to keep having no-continuity between the shorts and not have her in future adventures. (Although in the story for the AR app Fix Up the City, it seems they kept continuity so maybe there is hope.)

Nice list and I fully agree with it. For me A Close Shave also remains my most favourite, though it's a hard choice. It has to do with humorous quality of course, but it's probably also because it was the first time learnt of their existence through a vhs of the movie an uncle brought me from England, where he lived at the time -originating from The Netherlands. Watching small clips from the movie -or probably all of the W&G movies- still makes me feel excited and chuckle. Although I have to admit I can also feel somewhat disappointed when computer techniques have visibly been used.

Close Shave holds a special place in my heart for being the one I watched the most even if I didn't like it as much as A Grand Day Out or Wrong Trousers. It was the only standalone Wallace and Gromit VHS tape I had, the other two having been recorded off of Cartoon Network or some such channel at some point in time. Curse of the Were Rabbit has some good lines, my dad and I will regularly quote "I'm just crackers about cheese," but having revisited it myself at some point I found it to be exceptionally weak. I don't know if I'd rate it above or below Loaf and Death, which I only watched like once? Sometime close to when it came out, I think, on Netflix if I remember correctly? I'll need to find a way to watch Cracking Contraptions I've never seen it.
