Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14IIL05 coming with no picture - How to disable the onboard ram memory

Working in a computer shop for many years with a workflow of always 50 devices under repair/waiting for repair, never knew you can disable onboard memory, i am surprised, again sorin the wizard

Sorin', I have this exact laptop in front of me with a corrupted screen image. The difference is this laptop has both onboard and the slot occupied. As soon as I removed the slotted RAM module the laptop boots fine. So I replaced the RAM stick with an 8gb from 4gb, the laptop won't boot now nor will it boot putting the old RAM stick back in. This led me to check the socket and yes many of the pins have no continuity and are therefore cracked/de soldered. I am about to resolder each one using rosin, 'rosins good' 😂. I now assume both RAM sticks are OK and the socket is the problem. This m/b is so flexible and the laptop is weak. I cannot find a single moving pin though, I will continue my quest but want to thank you as I immediately got to the issue with confidence from watching you for years.

Hallo dimitri, I had the same with my lenovo ideapad 3-15IIL05 Only With the RAM module sticked on the board, i had a short on the 3.3V rail in the dirction of the components near the ram slot. and the laptop did not comming on. I watch a lot of videos from Sorin, zo i decided to put low power on that rail, to find some heated place. No caps became hot, but a little chip became cracked , and after remove the cracket ic, the sort was gone away, but the layer unther the chip was coming off. So this ended not ok, you are warned now hi.

t.i On the schematics i found info about the chip with code on the board :PU1101 it is a 16 pin's ic, so end of exercise for me.

On the motherboard there are a set of config resistors for selecting from the table of onboard memory configuratons. I wonder if switching these to an unused entry would have the same effect as disabling the onboard RAM with the benefit of the fix surviving a future BIOS update.

Only works if you have a RAM slot, if all the RAM is soldered, it is game over (unless does not have the epoxy). I could save a laptop with that issue, and no RAM slot, by reflowing. But this method may be handy in the future. Thank you.

It's not game over if there is epoxy. You just have to do more work, remove rams and epoxy from board and replace all rams with new parts. New RAMs come with balls so work is just hot air new rams in place, that's all.

Terrible idea to twist the laptop to diagnose it. While you may establish temporary connection under faulty chip, you could create connection issues somewhere else. 😢 Its best to take it apart and press on each chip individually and reball it.

Very clever fix. Imagine what the repair charge would be if you removed the RAM, cleaned everything and re-fitted. Very time consuming.

Well, the laptop has few years, very unlikely there will be a new bios update, and even if it is a bios update, usually is a ME region update, not a full bios update

Not possible because the glue holds the chip under the bottom of the chip. The only solution is remove rams and scrape glue off the board, clean everything then fit new ram chips.

I have a Toshiba with this same error condition. It doesn't have onboard ram but has 2 difference sticks ive tested with. I was suspecting a corrupt BIOS and have ordered a programmer, but maybe ill hunt around for some more ram to try.

@@OktaFierce Ok that's a Satellite from 2009 it won't have that issue. I have a few Satellites here, A10, A20, A60, 2430 and some others. They don't use BGA chips or glue.

Question, what will happen if we force remove the onboard ram chips and clear any short circuit. Will the original bios check for onboard ram and then skip to the external ram or it will freeze like the original state?

@@TheAlfajuls you can search schematics and boardview for your board, open schematics and search page of RAM In one of this page there are a table with 3/4 resistor to switch for select brand of onboard ram or disable it You see on your board what is brand of RAM soldered and see table for corresponding configuration. You move this resistor to place for disable it. With boardview you can see where are this resistor on PCB Sorry for my bad English 🫣

With this practices you don't need modding bios and for futures update it still disable With bios patch ( I now the serial are removed ) if computer run bios update the board don't start again because onboard ram is enabled for default. With config resistor there isn't problem for ever!

The fault could be anywhere between the cpu and ram chips. This fault is common in the PS4 and it is almost always means reballing the apu.

I'm facing the same issue with a customer lenovo laptop. Same model. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So i believe that RAM are failing.

Sorin must the bios chip be on board while disabling the onboard ram.

you can remove the bios, read it in eprom programmer, write new bios then re-attached the chip. It doesn't have to be done while the bios chip is on the board.

i have this laptop model since 2020, i recently had it checked since it needs to be plugged in to turn on. even if its plugged in it won't charge It wasn't battery problem but Super IO controller and the technician said changing it will likely kill the unit. I wish it was fixed :((

Badcaps are saying that the chines SPD tool has viruses and not to use it, there are scripts on the forums that can do the same task but not all laptops are compatible.

@@radminas2739 If it's epoxy it will be resistant to pretty much any solvent.

You can try it with heat-gun, with the smallest nozzle and 100-150C temp. Then try to remove the epoxy with a metal tool, little by little... There's a high chance of making damage on the board and it takes a lot of time.

I reballed today ryzen 7 cpu with Sn63Pb37, this is terrible mainboard was soldered with 140 °C solder, but this black compound / glue is can be removed at > 220 °C. Very dangerous but i was succesfull without to reball memory.

I still don't get how a changed bios can fix a physical issue(bending solved it). BIOS is magic and tells to solder joints to be stronger?

the bios no longer tries to use the faulty ram at boot time. the rams are still loose but the laptop does not use them now. you could even just remove the rams it will still work.

That software program to edit the bios is EXTREMELY difficult to find without having to make an account on some random forum (which of course I'm not going to do). I had to give up after going through about 50 sites and found only a headache :-/
