Would be an instant buy if Lenovo would finally allow (real) custom fan control. The forums are full of requests and complaints but Lenovo simply does not care. Look at 10:09, where temperatures on Balance are just ice cold. The fans could spin much quieter but Lenovo let them get up to 48 db which is too loud to play in the living room or with external speakers. I don't want to be forced to wear headphones when temperatures are so low that the fans could be much quieter. In custom mode you can not fix it, because Lenovo prevents you from lowering the fan sliders -_- Many other vendors like Asus, HP, XMG or their Linux subbrand Tuxedo all allow real fan control which is mandatory to optimize performance and fan noise.

Jarrod, I think I figured out the heating on the cooling pad. The back of a cooling pad is the most open and with all the hot air moving out the back of the legion 5 it's just pulling in heated air. What I'm not liking about Lenovo is that their design for the 5i Pro is not really improving by that much each year. Sure, the hardware changes, but if you look to a 2021 5 pro, and then the ones from the 3 years, it really just changes internally aside from the logo on the lid. Like, keyboard layout is the same, the 16:10 aspect ratio 2k screen has been the same or similar enough, the backlight is the same with the 4 zones. Considering the fact a 3070ti is extremely similar to a 4070, and the 2022 laptop can be found for like half the price if not less, I don't really see the reason to upgrade from an older model unless you really need the CPU upgrade

I got a Legion 5 just a few months before the pandemic. The power supply died and replace 3 times, the screen started having green horizontal lines and I replaced it, the left half of the keyboard died and i had to use an external, all within the first year. It started thermal throttling badly even after cleaning it and eventually it burnt out and wouldn't turn on. I got a new laptop and checked the old ssd, it logged almost 2 years of on time before death. Don't know if they updated the design but it doesn't handle heat very well, the logos and windows sticker all completely faded within the first month and it didn't even have a way to control fan speed.

First impression after a few minutes looking at it: i really like it. It doesn't scream gamer kiddy but isn't overly stealthy with those bad black finishes like razer uses, that are more smudge than black afte rhandling it. It's also nice that they put two of the major connectors in the back. HDMI and Charger cables are a pain and it's great not having them in the mouse zones. The two things i'd point out as "ehh" is the location of the ports, being all bunched towards the user and the RJ45 not being in the rear.

Small suggestion - could you even shortly, show how laptop is behaving when charging through USBC? I am suggesting that because no one does as good laptop reviews as you, and no one is going into details of USB-C charging in specific models, short info about that would be amazing. USB-C charging is relevant to some group of people like me, when i take my laptop for short trip and dont want to take big and heavy 300W charger. really wish for a review of the slim 5, especially to see if the new chip has a better battery management (since the chip and gpu make the 2023 and 2024 version so similar, I believe it's also veey useful to point out on video if it'd really be worth going for the newest one)
@supernova97215 ай бұрын
Will go with the slim just for the ports placement.

Tbh I hate Lenovos naming system, if it even has a system. Trying to figure out what year, type and generation each laptop is when shopping for them is near impossible. Most stores don't include relevant info on their websites, and the naming scheme is utterly useless in this regard. This is an exceptional review - thank you.
@JarrodsTech4 ай бұрын
Yeah. It got to be a bit of a mess. We typically look out for CPU and GPU generations as a quick way to determine release year. It gets trickier when they use previous year hardware though.

I never understood the reason in perhaps every laptop review (any youtuber) people press the keyboard to flex it, like that is something it would happen under normal usage. Then again I have watched computer keyboard reviews where youtubers hold the keyboard from the edges and try to twist it because...wtf? As for the actual laptop, oh I like this one! Especially the thermals. Good job Lenovo! Price is irrelevant as I have no money lol.
@JarrodsTech5 ай бұрын
It gives you an idea of how rigid it is, some of them have heaps of flex and in normal use that translates to it feeling like mush.
@TrusteftTech5 ай бұрын
@@JarrodsTech First of all thank you for your reply. I appreciate it. As for the issue at hand, I don't know. Perhaps I am typing the wrong way the last 40 years as I never experienced any such mushing in anything that is not a $3 keyboard.

My main issue is that the Balanced mode already sounds like an airplane taking off, so I play on quiet. Wonder if it is possible to tune the custom mode so that the performance is close to balanced but the fans stay like quiet (maybe by allowing to gpu and cpu run a bit hotter within reasonable margin).
@steveco18004 ай бұрын
Try experimenting with a frame rate limit in the NVidia drivers while using balanced mode. That way during less demanding parts of the game it can downclock and reduce the fan, so it stays quieter and heat doesn’t build up like when maxing it out.

when will you review the Legion PRO 5i ? it's the only 2024 legion laptop you haven't reviewed yet.
@kelvinballer235 ай бұрын
The lenovo legion sim 5 is the better version. AMD is the better efficiency CPU and has a better port layout. All the important ports are hidden in the back and it has a full size SD card instead of the micro SD card. I also believe with the additional side vents still provides better cooling. Otherwise they are both really similar and both solid mid tier gaming laptops!
@RomaYT9995 ай бұрын
I have the same but 2022 I believe with 12700hx and 3070m its a really good laptop except 2 things 1 battery life SUCK! 2 noisy but thats kind of expected
@vncube15 ай бұрын
>Missed opportunity to introduce Core Ultra 7 to a mainstream laptop >Uses overkill HX processor instead with dinky 4070, CPU advantage in gaming disappears from 1440p upwards to the point that a 5 Slim 4070 would likely match it based on the TUF A15 4070 results >Worse port layout than Slim model despite the extra volume The Legion Normal/Slim/Pro fragmentation has been a mess.

8 GB of Vram and 1440p.. my 3070Ti was completely worthless after 2 years! So I sold my laptop, I will boycott 1440p on laptops, 1080p is plenty with screens this small. I ended up with a 25" 1080p240 monitor but I later thought why not just get a desktop at this point..🤣 That project ended up north of €2000 with a 26L matx case, Ryzen 7600 and 4080S connected to my OLED TV. Edit: also sold the monitor.

I have one, and I can say the following: Pros: *The quality of the materials is good, the laptops feels solid *The performance is very good *The screen with its 240 Hz frame rate looks great and smoth. * Its cooling system works fine, of course it is noisy when I play a demaning game but it is normal. Cons: *My computer has a i9 RX4060 and the battery duration is not good, even if I use the low performance mode it is not lasting more than 2 and a half hours with doing basic stuff like using chrome and microsoft office *The power of the speakers is really low, not what I expected for a 2,000 buck laptop I am really disappointed in this area If you have any doubt regarding this computer, let me know, maybe I can help you :)

Hello friend, there is something I want to ask, I want to buy this computer, but I am torn between the pro model and the graphics cards, the pro model has the same processor, it is about 10% better, the important difference is that the non-pro model has 16 GB RAM, and the model with 32 GB RAM. Do you think there is a difference in the cooling systems? Which one should I choose?
@Delicious29484 ай бұрын
Yo i also have same model but 4070 performance is great but i will say when maxing out graphic and playing long duration at performance mode battery drain cuz 230w lol

If you do not need a computer immediately, wait to buy any 2024 Intel or AMD gaming/pro laptop. They could be better value. Wait for next-generation chips or buy the current ones for hefty discounts, as they are likely significantly worse in CPU, GPU and NPU performance than upcoming chips.

Knowing Legion lineup I assume the 140w charging through Type-C is only with Lenovo 140w GaN charger , and only 100w if using non Lenovo GaN charger. This kinda info is important to mention if true, so unsavvy people won't be misleaded
