As far as the button overload on the Legion Go, this isn't actually as big of a deal as it first seems. The two large side buttons on the right don't do anything if you're not already in FPS mode, and the back buttons don't do anything either unless programmed to do something in the game you're in. It really doesn't create any kind of accidental input chaos in 99 percent of situations and doesn't really intrude too much unless you just hate the feeling of buttons in your hands. Great overview otherwise though. I personally have owned both and prefer the Go because I really don't game much outside my home anyway and really just use the system to play in more comfortable ways like in bed or on the couch rather than on my laptop with a separate controller or desktop. So battery life is not a huge issue for me. I'll just plug in if I need to.

Thank you for this great review! I bought the high end steam deck last summer and got bitten by hardware issues and buzzing that reminded me of the risks this type of device can have. The temp under load and the fact I almost always needed it plugged in to ensure a reasonable length gaming experience has me sticking with my gaming laptop. I think that your points about the success of the switch and its dedication to simplicity and portability are critical to deciding if this is the proper device for your gaming needs.

One point you have to consider is that even tho you have to reduce the resolution to use portably on the go, all that extra power is available when docked at home. It’s the same philosophy as the Nintendo Switch in that regard. The difference is that the switch handles the resolution change and power decrease automatically, whereas the legion and others are more of an implied function. It would be more obvious had the legion and ally been marketed with that use case and shipped with a dock for home use.

Great review!! I really like your points of view and how you compare them against the Nintendo switch concept, gaming laptops and even consoles. I personally bought the ROG Ally to play those less demanding games that I can play on the go (like vampire survivors, hollow knight, unravel two, limbo, etc ) that I don't usually play when I'm in front of my desktop or Xbox Series X itself like AAA FPS games and it does last for hours (+4 hours). I also uninstalled all "laptop" related software like MS Office, one drive, etc. in order to receive no notifications at all. This is my gaming portable device, not my laptop, console or phone replacement.

I was cracking up when he said "Diarrhea of buttons". Good review, it's making me think twice before getting the legion go. Instead I might just pull the trigger on the Legion 14 inch oled laptop. I had it as a loaner and it was awesome. The colors and the gameplay on it is amazing. Thst ryzen amd chip is awesome. Two hours of play vs a lap top and an xbox 360 controller.

Good luck playing cyberpunk or any good complex game for grown-ups on the switch... As an adult that has a 1 hour each way commute to work (meaning 2 hours of portable gaming time) I'm soo glad that the Steam Deck and the Rog Ally exist as I'm not drawn to the switch and those basic almost childish like games from Nintendo (ok there some AAA that run like crap on there as well...but I just can't bear with that) . Playing Cyberpunk, Spider-Man, uncharted legacy, god of War almost without performance compromise while traveling is just mind-blowing and it beats playing 10hours of Mario Kart or wtf Nintendo has to offer. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's better than the others. (maybe Zelda is the only exception from Nintendo that would genuinely interest me)

Great review and very different from other reviews. I also agree that a portable device should last longer in terms of battery life because "portability" should be the priority, in addition, the price for me doesn't make sense/ too much because they're not as portable compared to the switch because you would stick to wall more often so I would rather buy a console/PC at this time but hopefully in the future they can address these issues.

I got an ROG Ally and specifically waited for a 2 TB SSD. With a dock it will be my new desktop and I can take it places yes it needs to be hooked up to mains most of the time but in a pinch can do hero wars and a little bit of rocket league on the battery. Plus in this cold weather we are having the top vents make decent had warmers.

Comparing either of these machines with a Nintendo switch is such a waste of time. In order for a vast majority of third-party triple A's to play on the switch they were absolutely bare bones ported to get any performance in most cases. The importance of battery life on these machines are subjective and is all dependent upon your playstyle. I game on a couch, occasionally in bed or sitting at my desk at work in all three situations when battery becomes an issue I am within 1 m of an outlet.

This is the best review ive seen for the pc handhelds. This should be a standard for your channel. Answer to your questions, i would not replace my consoles or pc for a pc handheld bc consoles/home pc are my power houses for games to look and run the best, where my handhelds are extentions of the home experience to have on the go or at least away from my desk. Lenovo go is amazing to look at with its huge screen but i did have to disable the extra buttons on the controller bc of accidental presses. The ally is great too being smaller and the vrr screen is noticeable after using the legion go, i noticed it on ps3 games. But the risk of sd card failure on the ally is disappointing a d crazy that it has not been fixed. Right now im on team lenovo

Wow I enjoyed every minutes! The hype reached me and almost bought one, but convinced myself I don't need. Main issue the battery life, other one is the performance, many titles in the 20-30fps territory even at performance mode just unacceptable. Tech is just not there yet, maybe 2-3 gen later..

This isn’t applicable to most users but I wanted truly top tier handheld pc gaming so I tried GeForce Now Ultimate on my Legion Go. Truly mind boggling how good the games look on the compact 1600p screen. Niche situation yes but if you’re into cloud gaming then the Legion Go is more than worth it. You get top tier performance on a handheld just based on raw specs AND you get top tier PC performance with GFN. Along with the great feel of the controllers it’s the best handheld for me and I’ve owned all 3 major ones. Gifted my Steam Deck to my little cousin and my Ally is collecting dust 😅

For me I am mostly considering one of these because I can't fit a tv and a new console in the guest room where I sleep until my son is big enough to sleep by himself. Also being able to bring to work and school (where power outlets are plenty) I can bring it up during my longer breaks and play games not available on the Switch, which is another point he doesn't bring up. I want to play Diablo 4 or Balder's Gate 3 or Cyberpunk in my spare time. Nintendo Switch doesn't offer this. (But I love my switch, don't get me wrong!)

Agreed! Great review but I want to play my steam games & want to play games when they release albeit wait for a steam sale & not have to wait 2-3 years for a switch release. Switch is amazing but it's not in the cadence with what I want to play currently (my nostalgic childhood games + newer indies & optimized newer generation games like Kena, Ratchet & Clinck, Physonauts 1 &2 to name a few).

I ended up going with the Legion Go because of the bigger, higher resolution, and higher refresh rate sreen. I have a very powerful PC at home and GeforceNow. Streaming is the future for handheld devices imo. With Steam or Geforce now I can stream Cyberpunk at 2560x1440 144fps max settings with path tracing to my Legion Go running at 8watts. I can do the same with the other two handhelds but why would I when the GO can do it better? Also streaming at 8watts means the battery last 4-6 hours instead of 1 to 2 hours.

Do you have the legion go? I doubt the detachable controller connectors are weak and may feel loose on the connection unlike the switch. Do you feel that attached controllers like rog ally would provide better handheld experience and confidence while gaming?

@@retweaksatapathy106 Yes to some degree. I don't feel like the GO controllers are "weak" or loose, but they are more awkward and take a little time to get used to. You will press the "mouse" buttons often while gaming on the GO but since they aren't bound in regular controller mode they wont mess you up. Its more of a feeling thing you will need to adjust to. I will say having a mouse available as part of the device, and a trackpad have been amazing while copying files from PC to the GO or doing normal (Windows) stuff.

Interesting…I hadn’t considered using GeForce now or steam to stream to this device. Did you consistently get that sort of battery life doing that? That’s a game changer for me when it comes to deciding over the Go or Ally. Clearly I want the bigger screen, refresh rate and trackpad/mouse.

@@jimbob7424 Yeah to some degree. More modern chipsets will obviously be faster than current chipsets, but they will always be less capable compared to their desktop counterparts. That is where streaming comes in. I agree streaming will never be as good as native, but it is getting very close. In terms of handhelds though I get better quality streaming Cyberpunk on GeforceNOW at 2560x1600 Ultra settings with path tracing on the Legion compared to 1280x800/low nativly. I can't even feel the latency and I am very sensitive to latency. I can also run the device in low power mode while streaming. Less heat + more battery life.

None of these for desktop experience. Portable PCs just aren't powerful enough. To play desktop games there is give and take in all of them. For PC gaming: 1. Ease of use: Steam Deck OLED 2. Best screen: Steam Deck OLED if 800p resolution is ok with you. 3. Best Battery Life: Steam Deck OLED 4. Best Support: Steam Deck OLED 5. Best Performance: At the moment ROG Ally (Lenovo is still working out the bugs of their software and BIOS). The Steam Deck will run older games and Indies at 60 or higher though but for newer triple As around 30 FPS. 6. Best Windows PC Replacement: Lenovo Best All Around: Steam Deck OLED if you can handle Linux and not having access to some games or are ok tinkering. Personally, I have the Steam Deck LCD and want to upgrade. I am leaning towards the Lenovo due to size and it can also replace or replicate a windows tablet and it's bleeding edge with that FPS mode. The ROG Ally has worked out a lot of kinks and is currently on sale in the States at Best Buy for $620 or $600 if you're a BB club member. This guy is the ONLY reviewer I have seen on KZbin that recommends the ROG Ally none extreme CPU model. He's wrong as it's pretty under powered. If that's an option then I'd go Steam Deck OLED all day, every day. Steam Deck 2 will be out in 18 months if you're not in a rush. Valve is working on official dual boot support and windows is working on a gaming interface.

@TechniQualities Come on! I never unintentionally triggered the buttons when plugging the controllers off! As others already commented, the buttons on the back by standard don't have any functions assigned therefore nothing happens. And even if you have functions assigned you easily can get the controller off without triggering those. Also hardly complaining about the Windows Handheld's battery live, you need to consider two points: - Those are the first two handhelds Asus and Lenovo released ever, and Nintendo is successful in the handheld market and has experience with it since over 30 years! - The power that those consoles need to run Windows games in a not adapted way (not especially optimized like for the Nintendo Switch) is way higher than on the Switch. And therefore I find it really impressive what they can do. You will see that also the AMD APUs used in those devices will quickly evolve. The successor to the Z1 Extreme will be already coming out next year, and it is a really quickly evolving market! Even quicker then the one of the graphics cards at the moment. (Intel also released first handhelds with their APUs)

As far as battery life goes, reduce to output/settings for a profile which provides the amount of battery life which suits you. It’s not like there’s any other windows gaming handhelds that are cheaper, with better battery life. And for that matter many might just use this before bed or just for a few minutes here and there.

I had the legion go 3 times which means I took it back 3 times to many bugs and other issues that made me pissed off. Maybe the Rog will work for you better. I have the Steam Deck oled and it’s fantastic. I like the idea that when you turn off the system during gameplay you turn it on and back to where you left off and you don’t have to worry about your sd card frying up.

its funny how he is quick to shut down the spec discussion, when these devices are pushes for the highest specs. Then to say the switch looks great is stupid as any ported titles that isn't a nintendo title looks like garbage with the 720p. Of course their scaled down self made IP titles will look great. Even then, the majority of their titles are boring and reskins of previous games. These new products allow AAA with the cost of battery. Personally, playing 2 hrs on a handheld is perfectly fine for me. I rarely plug it in to keep playing. Once that battery is alerted i already feel like im done with that session. The Steamdeck was completely fine for me and I never decided to drop money on a battery pack. I managed to complete multiple titles on the steam deck in a short amount of sessions. Legion just seems amazing as you can adjust setting for longer battery or do the opposite. Its just way more versatility, even without the vertical mouse and click off controllers.

Because often people want to play while sitting in the living room without a laptop on their lap, while something is on the tv, and in that case the portable can be plugged in, to do that the z1 extremes are fantastic even with the battery life issues. The non extreme rog ally is just a do not buy for that power level buy a steam deck. But if you want some fun with triple a games and vast c9mpatibility with pc games the rog ally extreme and the legion go are the go to depending upon personal preferences.

the real question you should ask would be, would you rather carry a 17" laptop inclusive its accessories weighing up to 5+ kg or would you rather carry a all in one gaming device weighing less than 2 kg in your small backpack?. I mean as a more or less ONLY pc gamer i would rather carry the legion go which gives you the same option as a Laptop without having to carry a brick of charger that weighs twice+ the same as the go on its own. The pros are you dont need no mouse & you dont need to carry all the rest of the usual accessories since you already have controller + mouse combination added onto the legion go (FPS etc scenarios) and Controller base scenarios are already thought of, and to be quite honest i dont commute by bus/train i drive my car to the destination and throw the setup onto a table or lay down next to a outlet. The same applies to either plane/flight or train rides if i absolutely have to use either (bus & train in my country has electrical outlets at every seat) same applies to flights if i absolutely have to pull the go up i carry a portable battery pack with me with a output of 200watt (anker for the w), to me this review seemed biased a lot.

I love this review but I'm going to portray a different audience/angle albeit it very niche which I find myself in. Unfortunately due to things out of my control I have extremely low blood pressure 80/60 or around that varies occasionally (never by much) So any chance of me sitting in front of a console or pc is squashed I usually go faint after an hour and don't get me started on being hunched over a keyboard or cricking my kneck in bed. Now enter the Legion Go it's in my hands at any given moment allowing me to game whilst lying down, I can plug it in to keep it going indefinitely and I have the added bonus of taking it on holidays et cetra. For me it's a game changer it allows me to play things like Valorant comfortably which just wasn't physically possible on a desktop. I will say though to the rest of the market if they were travelling on a train couldn't they just plug it in?, if they're at work use a free socket? and if all else fails a big battery bank would also work? There's definitely a place for them in the market and believe me when I say I'm all for it I'll be going to buy a Legion Go today and couldn't be more excited/ready for it.

You can use them and return them! I did it! Use them and see which you like best for the games you want to play, don’t go off reviews, try them your self and then return which you don’t like. I had the ally, used it for a couple weeks and exchanged it for the LGO, I’m trying this out now. I liked the 16:9 on the ally and the vrr but the size of the display on the LGO, oh man, I don’t know what to do lol.

@@m1studio honestly, I love it. Needed something for when I’m on the go and this does the job. Loved the ally too but the screen for the Go makes it hard to go back. I play COD, CS2, and Forza mainly and they all run flawlessly. In cs2 I’m getting about 100fps 1050p. I’m still on bios v26. Waiting for the official release of v28 to upgrade. Can only imagine the improvements. I do some racing here and there on the side when I’m not gaming🤣. Just some street stuff in Mexico.

I love my legion goal. I will say that right now it's not where it needs to be in the software. But I think in a few months from now it's going to be a beast to be reckon with listen. I understand that for the price you can get a laptop more or less. I can do the same or maybe even do more but you also people are completely considering. The fact that not everybody wants to have to carry around a controller with him and some people want this device just because it has the controllers already attached to it. That is so convenient. It's like imagine if you had a laptop that came with a controller attached to it, it's like a console on the go. Yes I understand that. The steam deck is way more optimized and that kind of makes sense. But before completely forgetting if I'm carrying around my legion go. That's all I need. That's my laptop. That's my tablet. That's my handheld gaming. Yeah having myself attached to the wall to be able to place sucks but you know how cold it is to be able to sit your legion go on a table and just grab the two little remotes and you don't even got to use it for the movement. Just so you can play it makes a difference. It really does and you don't even got to carry it. You can just set it down. And yes again a laptop I understand. But then I also got a carry around a controller and not everybody wants to carry around and extra controller. Or once you use keyboard and mouse. I personally do not like using keyboard and mouth for my gaming. Only thing I like using it for would be for RTS's. That's it really and even then like it's questionable because consoles have come such a long way and developers have optimized the controllers on RTS games for consoles. So good that you can question the keyboard and mouth. I don't play online competitive gaming so I don't care about all that. I'm a single player gamer and the legion go has a beautiful display to play on and it plays pretty much almost any game that you really need at certain settings adjusted

I’m a console gamer and want to play PC games. Thought about getting a gaming laptop but I think these handhelds are better for me. I looked at the steamdeck but it doesn’t play all games and doesn’t really do GamePass games. Question, in terms of power and specs, what console is the Rog Ally Z1 Extreme similar or more powerful than, Xbox One X? PS4? PS4 Pro? Something else? Thanks

should be around series x or close there at least on specs but in reality it doesn't performs that way because of low power and low ram speed comparing the traditional consoles

My Lenovo legion go half the time freezes when I try to quit a game. Nothing fixes other than restarting the device.

For me I got it for 400 and go is 879 . Bought it and returned . Ignoring the price also it's horrible with software and damn heavy

I respect this comparison but for me I would rather have a more powerful experience with my games running flawlessly over a longer battery life. If I am taking one of these traveling, I don’t expect myself to be somewhere where I can’t charge it after 1-2 hours, otherwise I’m probably going somewhere where a device like this wouldn’t serve any purpose like hiking or something.

What I want most is MASS adoption of these devices. It will force game developers to start standardizing game specs, and even better force them to work with actual constraints. In particular, it'd be fun to see games coming out that take less than 150gb to store, and less than 16gb of ram to run. C'mon, Optimize!

Those buttons on the back don't even do anything when you press them by accident unless you map them.. They automatically activate once you turn on the fps button.. Stop trying to make the legion go bad if you're not going to be fair.

Yes. He also fails to mention what makes the switch sale. Games that are exclusive and the fact they replaced both their console and hand held market with one machine. It's a great little machine but not in league with the 3 main PC portables. I have the OLED and many ports are miracles to run on it and even when they do the sacrifice in visual fidelity is definitely noticeable.

@@kevindsmith10000 Yeah. I mean he's just using it as a false correlation. The Switch has way more downsides than that. The original model had battery life similar to the first Steam Deck, so nothing remarkable. You have to pay for online, the ergonomics aren't great, it's a very underpowered device for the money. But it sold because it was made by Nintendo and it was marketed. And when you want to play the newest Nintendo games, you have no choice but the Switch. There is no home console equivalent like there is for PC. A lot of people only play the Switch docked.

neither devices are portable. none can kit in a jacket or pants pocket. they both require a back pack to comfortable to carry around. size no longer matters.

Switch ergonomics are terrible if you have adult hands. Also, (and this may be an unpopular take) I've never liked Nintendo's first party games. Just not for me and the 3rd party games are better pretty much everywhere else. I get why the Switch is popular, but I don't think it serves the same market as these PC handhelds.
