Hi Jarod, very nice review. I've purchased this laptop a month ago (i7-9750, 16GB RAM, GTX 2060, 1TB M2 SSD, Windows 10 Pro). Overall it's a very good machine. I was happy with thermals (after couple hours of Tarkov temp was between 85 and 90 with -0.140 undervolting, cooling pad and second FullHD monitor, avg room temp is 27 degrees Celsius, PERFORMANCE MODE). When working (programming), temps were cca 55-65. However, with recent Microsoft update (Windows 10 KB4541335) thermals were almost always over 93 and hitting thermal throttling more than often (when gaming ofc). After uninstalling that update, temps were almost back to normal. Ofc, I wanna repaste processor (I believe it's the must do thing with any mobile i7) but unfortunatelly official services aren't working due to corona crisis. I don't have any other mobile i7 in my home (only two mobile i5's and one desktop i5) so it could be nice if you could confirm this and do some thermal testing if you have this series of i7 at your disposal with this windows update and before it.

Hi! I know this is a bit off-track, but I am strongly debating buying the Lenovo Ideapad L340 with the i7 core. I'm not the best with computers and specs and all that, but I'm getting into it because of you! I was just wondering if I should have any second thoughts about getting that computer. I'm strongly fond of the Lenovo series as they've been so swell for me, but my current one has come to his end:( I also just have 102GB on my SSD card (if I'm not wrong) which is a pain, as I can barely play anything along with doing schoolwork on my current computer. I will be using the L340 for schoolwork, but most likely mainly gaming and entertainment, hehe. I have a bunch of steam MMO and adventure games that I've always wanted to play (like Tera and Jurassic World - which I know can be a bit heavy for laptops), so I'm just wondering if I should just go with it or look for a better option. Thanks for any feedback, appreciate it all:)
@JarrodsTech4 жыл бұрын
It's ok for the money, performance is down due to single channel memory (guessing you saw my review on it?) You can install a larger slower/cheaper HDD for games too, it supports one. Better to buy it with a HDD though, as Lenovo try to charge you a huge amount of money just to get the cable, ends up being cheaper to buy it with a HDD from the start. Anyway it should handle that ok.

It used to be that gaming laptops used mobile graphics card, which is 30% less powerful than desktop graphics card. Nowadays, since 2016 (when the GTX 10 series Pascal microarchitecture was released), gaming laptops (even the thin and light Max-Q ones) use the same graphics card as a desktop, so they now have the same performance as a desktop but with higher power consumption. The Acer Predator Helios 300 (2018 model with GTX 1060) uses 155 watts from the wall during gaming or other demanding tasks like video editing.

Enjoyed your detailed and unbiased review as always, man! I'm considering a Legion right now. I was leaning towards y740 because it has Thunderbolt 3. But your review exposed some flaws, particularly in thermal performance. Do you have any info if Lenovo fixed it's issues in newer versions? And another question, if you don't mind. Do you think Thunderbolt 3 is worth it to pay more for y740, rather than getting y540 or y7000? How much performance does desktop GPU lose if you play through Thunderbolt and external monitor? I was thinking in the long run Thunderbolt is a must...
@JarrodsTech4 жыл бұрын
Cheers! I am not sure, I had to send that review unit back to Lenovo so haven't had the chance to test with newer BIOS, but I think I linked to a forum thread following the issue in one of my videos on it so you could check there to see what's happened since. Do you actually need Thunderbolt 3? I don't think many people do, generally you will step down 1-2 tiers of GPU with eGPU, for example when I tested my 1080 on a Dell G5 it performed closely to the 1060 Max-Q that was in the laptop anyway. For the cost of the enclosure and GPU, you could probably just buy a mid range laptop in 3-5 years.
@bananapeel35294 жыл бұрын
@@JarrodsTech Thanks again, for the detailed response! I'll go check that forum. Thunderbolt 3 is just an itch when you don't have it. You never know where the technology takes us in 3-4 years with today's AMD vs Intel/Nvidia competition. Even 2070 might soon become completely irrelevant...

Hey there! Your videos have been really helpful in my way to find a new laptop this year. I've found a version of this laptop on amazon which comes with only a gtx 1050ti but it's pretty mucj enough for me. Can you please help me telling me if I can turn of or change de intensity of the keyboard LEDs?

Yes, you can change the brightness between two levels or turn them off. I demo it in the upcoming full review video 👍

@JarrodsTech4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, 740 if you want Thunderbolt/G-Sync/RGB lighting, those are the key differences. Also look at the Y540 instead of the Y7000, in many regions it's cheaper and basically the same.

Maybe, a few people have asked for it, does it have a benchmark or any good way of testing it in a reproducible manner?

Well, it just a gameplay and unfortunately it doesn't support external FPS counter, so only built-in FPS counter can be used (it is really small and hard to see). Sorry for the disappointment.

Probably 80%+ of the machines I test can manage -0.15v, but it all varies and is luck, there are no global values, nothing is guaranteed. I use XTU myself because it's easy to quickly set what I need to get the video done, Throttlestop has far more option though.

@@JarrodsTech I know it's unrelated to this video, but I felt I need to ask this in a recent video. I just watched your Acer Helios 300 review and it felt like turbo mode is essential to get the best performance on modern games. Can turbo mode run 24/7? Is the only downside of turbo mode the loud fans, or is there a damaging effect/negative outcome of having it on at all times? Sorry if the question is silly, I've only ever had an older laptop, so I'm not familiar with these more modern features.

I think it's still a good option if you need something now, but could be worth waiting for new Intel/AMD CPUs and NVIDIA refresh graphics in a few months,even if you don't buy something new maybe that lowers the price of current stuff.
