I have to agree the 32mm is the more complete image Adam. The last shot though was my favourite as the colours on the boulders in contrast to the black rocks was great.

Your video/music combo, albeit short, threatened to give me a lump in my throat. In fact I had to watch it a couple of times to check! What a woos I am! The music played a large part and the beauty of the falls. With you on your choice of image. Makes more sense, better balance, makes more of a story around the boulders with light and texture. Great as always.

Hi Adam, just sat here watching the nice video, and thought I would comment on the 2 waterfall images. Although they are both good, I do prefer the image on the right taken with the 32-64mm. Not only does it give more prominence to the falls, which is really the focus of the image, but I also preferred it because of less shine / sheen on the rocks. The polarizer also takes a bit of haze out of the image too, which is good in those conditions. Well done from one Englishman to another! Thanks as we for all the other videos, you sure give us something to aspire to, or at least have a goal of improving and honing our craft. Regards, John.

Adam, I agree with you...the longer lens shot is better. Seems like the diagonal lines of the water are more prominent. Also, in both of your images (the cascade and the gorge), I really like how you brightened up the back of the image (trees in the first; sky in the second). It not only draws the eye there, but in doing so opens the image up to what lies just beyond...kind of an mysterious adventure thing. Well done and thanks! Gerry

Is agree Adam ,the 32-64 shot looks best to me. I like the extra leading line it produces from the bottom left of the frame . Also like you post processing colour correction. Great choice of shutter speed - the water is so dynamic. Second shot has great colour and shape contrast between yellow foreground boulders and the sharp grey rocks in the background. Great observation. MJ

Of the first two, the wide angle lens shot and the 32-64, I really prefer the 32-64 as my eye will travel up to the water fall in the background. With the wide angle shot my eye tends to stay on the boulder. I love that last shot you got. I hope you didn't get locked in. That actually happened to me at a local park. I started to get worried. When I went to the gate I noticed they didn't fasten the lock. I guess they knew I had to get out, lol. I opened the gate and shut it back. I don't think I will do that again.

Another very enjoyable video, Adam. The image shot with the 32-64 mm lens is much more to my liking. The overall look and feel just works better for me and that is not to say that the wide angle one isn't nice...because it is. It really looks like a wonderful place to photograph. Many times less water at some falls can really be nice for compositions. Thanks Adam! Nick

Adam, Both images are beautiful. I get what you are speaking of regarding the smaller size of the waterfall in the background. but the sheen on the rocks in the foreground really tie it all together in the wide angle shot. So i think I prefer the wide angle. As always, such a great video.

The 23 mil shot, for me, shows the scene as I think it would be viewed from that low perspective, as it is, if I were standing in that spot. The 32 mil does put the image in balance. 23mm with the large boulder is much more pleasing to my eye, although in both the bright warm glare at the top of the frame against the trees I found distracting and would be tempted to darken it. Must be good to have such great places on your doorstep and be allowed to go out and shoot them!

I think I like better the one with the 32-64, because the boulder is little less prominent and I like better the light on the background fall. But I also like a lot the way the 23mm leads the view from the boulder to the far fall. I really enjoy your videos. Normally I look for the grand vistas of mountains, the desert or seascapes and avoid trees and forest photography because the scenes are more chaotic. But after seen your videos I'm looking at them with a different eye. Thanks for the inspiration.

It was not just a narrower lens you also went a bit further back. I like that better too. Mainly because of the elongated rock that is now included at the base f the composition. I think maybe a video discussing your take on what is a good foreground element and especially foreground boundary (at the edge of the frame) to a shot and using some of your existing nice shots to illustrate could be helpful.
@sidekickbob7227
@sidekickbob7227 4 жыл бұрын
Of the two pictures, I prefer the narrow one. But I think you could get a really interesting composition by using the wide angel lens and move a couple of meters closer to the waterfall. You can see a small waterfall with two stones on top of it. Those stones and the small waterfall could be the foreground, and maybe the big waterfall would come to it right too?

If a composition is good with a 20mm lens, then it's not good in a lens with a 34+ mm and similar focal length. I've found, the perspective is changed ever so much, that the balance is immediately thrown off. It's absolutely true what you mention there about the background vs the foreground. it's really mind blowing how little focal length you can change and get such a big change.
@rio2cat

I like the 23mm version better because of the texture and light reflecting off the rock surface as well as waster rushing around it. It’s a more dynamic scene in my view. But then the background waterfall kind of loses viewer’s attention & importance so maybe the long lens version is more balanced. Regardless, both are excellent images. I really like your style of photography and hope one day I’d be able to take stunning pictures like that.

Agree with your choice of the longer lens for the first waterfall photo. The boulder invites you into the photo and allows the eye to wander beyond it into the rest of the scene. With the wide angle, the boulder is so dominant that it arrests the eye, inhibiting the viewer from going beyond it into the rest of the scene.

Great video, especially as it showcases the worth of standard focal lengths in landscape photography. The added compression of the first image with enhanced background and inclusion of more foreground elements in my eye created a far superior result. Did you Orton effect the background mist? This is definitely a video topic you can return to over and over. It is just my opinion but I think a lot of landscape photography gets too focused on the foreground element and the impact of intended subject (further into the frame) is greatly diminished in size and value due to a wide angle.
