I upgraded from the C300m2 to the C500m2 earlier this year and it's definitely the owner / operator camera that cuts the least corners from both the image and usability side. Or, in other words, it does the least things wrong. The different sensor crops work artefact-free, which is something that Sony never achieved. In regards to HFR, switching into 2K / S16 mode when going into 120 fps is at least an honest approach which reminds me of the better days of Sony (my good old F5 did the same thing)... why? Because it's a challenge to get a fast full-sensor readout from a imaging device designed for maximum dynamic range at standard frame rates. I still remember the release of the budget FS7 which - at first - would only offer full-sensor resolution, resulting in horrible aliasing (because the unit would only read part of the *same* sensor) and, of course, the dreaded (and even more budget) FS5 that would lure inexperienced buyers by promising relatively high frame rates (again, with a limited sensor read-out) and artefact-loaded images. Same goes for most of the photo/video hybrids by Canon and Sony which, in reality, would only offer one acceptable shooting mode and a lot of trade-offs like any other cheap one-trick pony. Digital Image Stabilisation has come long way since its introduction on the XC10 some years ago, IQ-wise it's not comparable to what it used to be (or what it is on something like the EOS R). Of course, it will not turn the C500m2 into a gimbal-operated unit but it will for sure smoothen out hand-held work if you know how to work with a camera hand-held (an art long forgotten or so it seems). All-in-all, the C500m2 is a reliable workhorse on which Canon has finally mastered the art of image super-sampling. I wouldn't want to produce without it.

A note about the C500 monitoring options. The “Mon” port is 1080p output only, and the “HDMI” port is switchable in the menu to either 1080p or 4K. But... those 2 ports can’t function at the same time, so that leaves you with one or the other! Plug onto one, the other is disabled, so that leaves you with (1) output (in 3G 1080p) for either an on-board monitor or a client/director studio or field monitor. The third output, the “SDI” port, only puts out a 12G signal (1080p or 4K, as opposed to the more readily available 3G signal monitors), so that signal is only good with a 12G input monitor which are few and far between right now, or you’ll need to get a really expensive studio 4K monitor which 12G was designed for, and then you’ll have the 3G only 1080p “Mon” port available for many different brands of on-board monitors. So... to get both a 1080p output to a studio client/director monitor, and still have a smaller on-board monitor at the same time, I had to go and buy the new Blackmagic 5” Video Assist which will take a 3G/6G/12G SDI input even thought its a 1080 monitor. (The Atomos Shogun also accepts a 12G signal, but those are the only 2 on-board monitors I know about right now). Most SmallHD monitors (which I own 2 of), unfortunately won’t work with a 12G signal at this time, even the newest Cine 7. And, it will be a while before I buy a studio 4K production monitor for the 12G SDI only port at todays prices, especially because I already own (2) fairly new 24” (4,500.00) DM240 Flanders Scientific monitors, which work great shooting 4K while monitoring 1080p. Sadly they only take a 3G signal input. The C500 is a great camera though, and hopefully Canon will have some Firmware updates coming soon.

@@JacobVossFilms Yes a while ago... Now you can use all the ports at the same time, and the one port that was just 12G 4K, can be changed to HD, which is helpful

I just want to point out that C-Log 2 is flatter and has more DR in the shadows than C-Log 3, this video has it backward at the start. Also, this camera does use Cinema Raw Light not uncompressed raw :) Thanks for the video!

Nice video! Thanks for sharing. One small correction...the raw in the c500 Mark ii is not a full raw like in the c700, it is cinema raw lite exactly like in the c200 except it is available in full frame.

I don't think viewers realize how revolutionary the ability to self change the mount is on a camera. Canon may not be the first to do it, but they're certainly the first to design it in such a way as to be user-friendly. That's a great accomplishment that Canon doesn't get enough credit for putting on their cinema cameras. As to the color match, that should be identical. At least downward compatible (e.g. a C200, C300 designation on the C500), and throughout the cinema line.

Here are some bugs/quirks I've found... 1. When peripheral border is turned on the signal out of the hdmi/sdi is cropped even when OSD is off for them. 2. when you film in S&F mode dual recording doesnt work (also no audio/AF) 3. When filming in HD mode it seems like the time remaining for recording that is displayed on the screen is wrong. Ive gotten close to 0 minutes remaining and when i go to offload footage i assume it will be near 500gb but its only 200gb 4. The user loadable LUTs seem to max out the brightness or something strange is happening 5. If you film at 60p (not in S&F) you cant playback the clip in slowmo on the camera 6. You can only access the status menu if you assign it to a button, kinda wish i could put it in the custom menu or get to it from elsewhere (there are other things that behave like this that i cant remember at the moment as well) 7. When you use any lut the false color thats suppose to be pink/magenta turns nearly white. you can see this behavior by pressing the lut button while the false color display is on 8. No low framerate timelapse mode

Chris Francia After talking to Canon regarding the false color changing to white when LUTS are applied-they told me that, currently the camera chip dose not support false color metering over LUTS. Not sure if that’s getting fixed in the future update or the chip is not gonna support it at all?

Chris Francia another bug that I’ve notice, at least on my external monitor is that, I can’t for some reason output (transfer) the in camera waveform box to an external monitor. The waveform on the camera is so small and one can barely see it. Not sure why canon didn’t give us a full screen mode on that?

Thanks for sharing Greg, great to hear your views on the camera. Can you please tell me which arm, and which shoulder mount you’re using on the C500 shown on your KZbin header photo? I’m looking for the best solution that doesn’t involve a full cage and doesn’t replace the original top handle.

It's Cinema RAW Light. I don't know why he called "full RAW", but it is the same Cinema RAW Light that the C200 has, but you have 2.1Gbps in 5.9K. In 4K (S35 mode), the bitrate is the same as the C200 (1Gbps)

First, you didn't answer my question (or maybe you did?). And second, that not true. Sometimes getting things right can be extremely difficult. And sometimes that research can yield conflicting results. For instance, I just bought a new set of speakers and someone ask for the difference between model A and model B. One reference said model A had DSP but B didn't Another reference said they both had DSP. Which was correct? Was one correct or was one older and hadn't bee updated? My point is, you can be incorrect, but not wrong. But that doesn't mean you didn't do any research. But if I can't solve it through research with reasonable accuracy, then I'd probably leave it off. Now find something good to say. Even if you don't include it here.
