When Leo Varadkar stepped down as Prime Minister, or Taoiseach, earlier this year, he was by no means done with politics.
Ahead of local and EU elections, Imran Garda went to meet with the Fine Gael politician in Dublin, as the nation wrestles with the intertwining issues of migration and a cost of living crisis. Varadkar gives his view on what drives anti-immigrant sentiment and slogans such as “Ireland is full!” - as well as the appeal of populist far-right parties across Europe. The former Taoiseach also shares why he supports Ireland's recognition of a Palestinian state and tells The InnerView why he believes it is important for his country to play an active role in addressing the root causes of global problems and being a part of the solution.

@@andrewcooney2387 Are you sure you're looking at the whole picture. The two biggest problems in Ireland according to people who chant this is the cost and lack of housing and immigration. Housing is unaffordable, I know this personally as I don't have one and will probably have to wait to inherit half of one. Immigrants/refugees coming to Ireland are starting at the absolute bottom of the ladder. Barely any grasp of the language, no assets, no income and lower standard of education. Israel will freeze over before these people can afford a house in Ireland. It's just not going to happen. Once they realise they can't afford to live here most, if not all will move on, the same as our young going to Australia. The only housing these people can compete for is social housing and for everyone in Ireland who is not eligible to get a free house, which is the vast majority, we care very little about the ones who are because they don't gaf that we have to earn one🤷

Nobody denies that legal migration has been a good thing for the economy, especially in light of the continued exodus of skilled young Irish workers who name cost of living, housing, and other issues, as main factors that influenced their leaving of the country, and aren’t choosing to leave just because of wanting to experience living in a different country. I think most mainstream political party members in Ireland have such a glaring blind spot as to where the bad sentiment towards them comes from, and it’s very easy to bash those people as being racist or right-wing, if they believe concurrent governments have failed the Irish people. A massive overhaul is needed.. and his disregard for the populist movement in Ireland speaks volumes. God bless the working class people who are being left behind ❤

Career politicians, bank rolling property investment funders, leprechaun economics are not what the Irish people need. Terrible management and controls on immigration, no caps and costs to the state and accusing the Irish people as racist has been insulting of this Government. Why not skill our own people and keep them here rather than they having to leave because high cost of housing to rent, supply shortage to even rent, and high cost of living. Irish local authorities perform fewer functions than municipalities across Europe, with their roles largely confined to physical infrastructure and environmental and recreational services. This has a negative effect on local employment, service quality, value-for-money, environmental protection, and local jobs and economic development. It has also contributed to declining local election voter turnout. Ireland has the most centralized system of governance in Europe. It has the appearance of a democracy in name but not a true democracy give its limited democratic decision-making powers, with Insufficient financial resources and autonomy for local authorities. Those with responsibility have no authority and those in authority have no responsibility or being held to accountability. Too many quangos and state bodies set up for the Government at great cost to the state so government can more often than not - pass the book.

"not unique to Ireland.." Varadkar must know that the circumstances Ireland is in re. their national borders are not the same as, in his words, "a normal European country". A normal European country doesn't have a common travel area with the UK. Other European countries did not have an opt-out on migration (except Denmark). European countries are not normally English-speaking tiny countries with some of their citizens born in a non-EU state across an open un-policeable border. A European country does not normally have national sports teams, national religious organisations, and national political parties running in both their state plus a non-EU jurisdiction. European countries do not normally have a history of centuries of dissident resistance groups and social divisions along sectarian lines - and a contested border, a fragile peace process, and paramilitary organisations as a legacy of that history. Normal European countries don't have an equivalent of the annual marching season on the island of Ireland where effigies of Irish elected representatives are hanged and burned on bonfires along with the Irish flag, or have their women's soccer team asked on English TV if they needed educating on their own history because of a video of them singing an Irish rebel song in their dressing room edit: not to forget the US connection. Unique in Europe for a head of government to have an audience every March with the US President, for US preclearance at Shannon airport, for the emergency daily air-lifts of infant formula from a FDA registered food company in Cavan when their US plant was shut down during the nationwide recall of baby formula. US investors who acquired the Quinn Group admitted that a clause in their contract re. campaigns of violence against companies was "unusual"

Varadkar is representative of modern Ireland... educated, imperfect, eloquent, often wrong, empathic, capitalist, with both successes and failures in his CV. What is clear, however, is that he has tried to make a positive difference. Unlike many of the posters here, he has put his head on the chopping block and has the scars to show for it. Ireland is not "full". The population of the island north and south is still less than it was pre-famine. It is the ONLY country in the world (geographically, and with pop more than 1m) where this is the case. England had 15m people in 1840 when the island of Ireland had 8m. Today England has 56m so Ireland should have 28 million. The missing 21 million are the result of colonialism. What is true, however, is that the combination of issues facing it is massively difficult. The vast majority of people agree that we should provide shelter to Ukrainians who have lost their homes and loved ones because of Putin's aggression. The vast majority has supported Palestine for decades, espcially those in Northern Ireland who have lived the apartheid and oppression that is the daily dread of Palestinians. The government, led by Leo, has not been effective in managing these and other problems. I disagree with much of your politics, Leo, but this interview reflects the decency of the great great majority of Irish men and women.

You sound like a peasant eating their crap when you excuse and avoid facts like children going missing under his tenure as Taoiseach. When people say Ireland is full, it doesn't mean we haven't got any room left. It means we haven't got any rooms left. We would be in a housing crisis right now even if we didn't have to take any migrants as the amount of housing that was built in the last decade has been pitiful.
@AnBreadanFeasa
@AnBreadanFeasa 19 күн бұрын
@@stiofain88 100% agree. Rent controls have had the unintended effect of reducing the number of properties available. However, the single greatest issue is the lack of public housing built over the past 40 years due to the ideological shift of governments in the Western world, led by Reagan and Thatcher. Anyone protesting that "Ireland is full" should instead be agitating for accelerated public building programs, side-lining major developers, banks and NIMBY associations. Migration is being used as a distraction by the far right, but the protests are full of useful idiots who believe anything they read on the internet.

His government became even more cosy with the Israelis, Von Der Liar will reward Leo for this with a cushy Europe job that’s what he was focused on. He knew in Ireland that it would be political suicide to not support Palestinians so he did the bare minimum required to hold respect while still maintaining investments in military companies & other Israeli companies
