Love Leonard, but the spoken intro, dedicated to Israeli and Egyptian soldiers, is after-the-fact crap. He wrote it in Israel, where he went from Hydra to volunteer for Israel during the 1973 War. He entertained Israeli soldiers. And he wrote it shorty thereafter for Israeli soldiers. Tellingly, he changes one word: from "the enemy" - referring to the Israelis' and his enemy - to "your enemies" - which would fit with the Israeli and Egyptian soldiers bit. The only bullshit I've ever seen come from Leonard. Cohen. Footnote, when performing the song in Tel Aviv in 1980, he told the crowd that the song was inspired “by the grace and the bravery of many Israeli soldiers at the front.”
