This song is so precious and delightful... And the warm voice of Leonard Cohen makes it even more wonderful 🥰❤️

So sad, no one could save Nancy. About 20 years ago I saw a painting in the Chelsea Hotel NYC that was dedicated to Nancy (on the 4th floor, the floor that Leonard lived on). Her memory lives on with friends and those that listen to this song.

Nancy is the Fat Nancy that Bob Dylan mentions in highwater I asked Fat Nancy for something to eat and she said “Take it off the shelf. As great as you are man you will never be greater than yourself” I told her I didn’t really care. For a good song about her listen to Chip Taylor’s “Angel of the Morning” She has a book coming out called “Autobiography of a rock star” she is actually a much better performer than Leonard and she was 12 years old in 1961.

Here’s a song I wrote inspired by personal memories of this song and some of the moving comments here. “The tune plays on” The sadness at what will never be Brought on by the happiest memory Of us dancing to that song The tune, it plays on Long after the dancers have gone Last night’s shirt Stained in blood and wisdom I can’t recall The boys in blue are after you But there’s nothing You can tell them from before the fall The whiskey whisked me To that sunset ballet Where you danced for me And I prayed you’d always stay My dancing beauty With the summer breeze you’d sway Swept up by the hand of Eternity My dancing beauty carried away The sadness at what will never be Brought on by the happiest memory Of us dancing to that song The tune, it plays on Long after the dancers have gone And the tune plays on The tune plays on The tune plays for all those now gone …
