Leonard Nimoy lends his voice to the king of Atlantis.
The supervising animator for King Nedakh has only one word for Leonard Nimoy: Wow. He was impressed with both his professionalism and his ability to delve into the character. Leonard Nimoy really became someone else in the process, he observes. It was like one could really smell the age and dust on his character, who, he thinks, was truly enriched by it.

The odd thing is, if this movie had come during the Disney Dark Ages (late 1970s - mid 1980s), it would've been a huge hit. It has an Indiana Jones/Stargate/Star Wars feel to it, the animation is great, the characters all kind of sound like they were written in the 80s (in a good way), and it's kind of like a prototype steampunk story. As it is, it's a sadly underrated adventure story.

So true. They actually aimed for that Indiana Jones feel during production and achieved that in a lot of subtle ways, such as the stereoscopic widescreen aspect ratio. The Stargate feel, I'm not sure if that was intentional but I definitely felt it too. And I love how they blended Mike Mignola's art style with Disney's, they cancel each other out in a good way and it's a really unique look.

Fun fact: the supervising animator for Nimoy’s character, Michael Cadeno, was astounded by the voice talent of Nimoy, saying he had rich character in his voice performance. Apparently also, he was so good that as he was speaking his lines during the recording sessions that the staff/crew would just sit and watch and gape in astonishment/amazement during the whole time. THAT’s how fuckin legendary he was.

The great Leonard Nimoy (RIP) was praised for his voice work in this (underrated) Disney animated film. One in which he was nominated for an Annie-award for his performance. And in my opinion, his monolgue to Milo as he lays dying was a high-point for his performance. His line, "The love of my daughter is all that I have left", was just touching.

It’s a symbiotic relationship, the crystal feeds and grows from the collective emotions of their ancestors, and in return, the crystal provides power, longevity and protection. Over time the crystal began developing a conscious of its own, though its unclear about how developed it has become, it seems to know the basic differences between right and wrong, considering its actions are in aid of our hero’s, but it’s not big on the details This can either mean it’s consciousness is still in the early stages, and might not even be sentient, instead closer to an instinctual, animalistic level.... OR... it’s at the other end of the spectrum and is way beyond even human levels of understanding. I suppose at the end of the day, it all depends on your own opinion As for why the king sealed it away He didn’t actually use the crystal itself in trying to create the ultimate weapon, rather, he only used a fragment, which probably wasn’t even conscious. Even that small fragment’s energy however, was too great, he underestimated the crystal’s power, and considering what a small fragment did, imagine what might have happened had the entire crystal detonated Following this and Atlantis’ destruction, he hid the crystal to prevent anyone, Atlantean or otherwise, from using the crystal, for the same purpose, as well as to protect Kida, from befalling the same fate as his wife, and essentially being absorbed by the crystal

I want to point out, he was a King Consort to the Royal Queen. He wasn't afraid of the crystal choosing him because it couldn't, Kida's was the only one who had the royal blood necessary hence why in his fear he tried to isolate her from it; willing to let his culture die in ignorance to protect her. And when Milo replaced him, it was once again as a non-blooded Consort to the royal bloodline.

I do have a headcanon that *Atlantis was a matrilineal society* (and similar to the myth of Poseidon vs. Athena over patronage of Athens, there were times when the males tried to wrest that power away from them, only for it to fail multiple times), and that *the actual rulers were its Queens Regnant* , and therefore were *usually the ones called by the Heart* , or else why would the stone effigies revolving around the Heart all portray male figures? Plato's story was just a cover up (ten sons of Poseidon as the kings of Atlantis) because Greek society was anti-women

I always love the fact that even though there is about a 2000 years culture gap between Rourke and the Atlantians the King knows a weapon when he sees one. Rourke treats the Atlantians as the ancient culture but everything Rourke and the others were doing the king had probably done to other civilizations. The king's warning is one of experience, "Not all obstacles can be removed by a sheer show of force". The king has probably used the same tactics Rourke is using many times before and knows a ploy when he sees it. Looking at the two of them talk is like looking at two sides of coin, one side more aged than the other but none the less different than its counterpart.

Oddly enough, I never put two and two together that the king was blind. I had always assumed that he had a strong enough tie to the crystal over thousands of tears for it to have physically changed him - probably because Kida's eyes were the same way when whe was bound to it. It's sad how the king became blind. In the beginning of the film when the queen is taken by the crystal he shields Kida's eyes away but he keeps looking at it until it emits a burst of bright light, blinding him. The scene where he describes the crystal is just stirring, when he says “my burden would have become hers” it just breaks your heart. I don't know of you can hear it here, but something that was brought up in an article I read was that the supervisors were so astonished by Nimoy's talent and how much character he put into his voice. They say they'd just sit there when he read lines and just watch in astonishment. :)

The king really encapsulates the essence of Atlantis in this film. His voice carry’s power and authority, but it’s also gravelly and frail under that deep, projecting tone. Like his nation, he was and in some was still is, proud, but he’s barely holding on to life, regretful of the mistakes that cost his people their nation and fearful that any outside force could snuff them out. He, like his nation, is a shell of their former power and authority, and when he dies and the crystal seemingly lost we feel like Atlantis is about to die with him

I'm 25 and I remember seeing this movie when i was just 5 years old and I think it was the first animated movie but the ending was cut short because the VHS Tape got tangled up by the end and we had to bring it back to the blockbuster.

If most of these Atlantians have been alive since the fall of their empire, why don't they know anything about their technology or written language? Remember; the shield covered the heart of the city, where all the bureaucrats, officers, priests and administrators would have been. All people who would have been literate.

Maybe it was royal family have increased lifespan while most of the Atlanteans died of old age. Many of those natives were probably their descendants but the remains of the old atlantean society was small.

From my perspective, the movie seemed to imply that the Atlanteans forgot their prior knowledge due to centuries of disuse. If you don't practice a particular skill, like driving or writing for literally several centuries, would you even remember how to do it?

When Rourke said "Well as usual, diplomacy has failed us" gives the implication that this was the not the first time Rourke didn't get his own way. Even though we don't know how Milo's grandfather died it can be assumed that between the shepherd's journal being found in Iceland and this film, Milo's grandfather found out Rourke's true motive was to find and steal the crystal for a hefty price on the black market. And when Rourke tried to coax him to join forces with him, Milo's grandfather simply didn't cooperate with him leading to his demise but likely left the journal to Milo. Rourke who got wind of this took this to his advantage and tricked Whitmore into funding his bet he promised Milo's grandfather so Milo can lead the crew to the crystal and once again faced being disappointed he didn't get his way when both Milo refuses to coop-rate and when the king refuses to say where the chamber is.
