The distinctive feature of the Italian Army in World War Two was its poor and insufficient armament.
Even though weapons produced at the famous Italian arms factory Beretta were of the highest quality, the rest were known for their very low quality or obsolete nature.

@@DLBBALL Actually, the Italians did shorten the Carcano from around 31 inches to around 21 inches. They replaced the straight bolt handle with a turned-down bolt handle. The Italians also got rid of the complicated iron sights and went with a simple V-notched and post sights. Finally, the new Carcano fired a 7.35×51mm Carcano round, instead of the 6.5×52mm Carcano. The problem that the Italians had was the fact that they didn't put it into production sooner.

@@georgemakrov6174 Because Gemany wanted every last soldier for the Russian invasion. The invasion in Greece was never a plan of the German high command and just came up with the italian call for aid. Furthermore Greece and Turkey had signed the "Balkan Pact" of 1934 and there was a kind of an alliance between them. In fact when the Greco-Italian war started two of the bigest newspapers in Turkey greeted the Greek resistance with sympathy and enthusiasm (thing very unusual). Thus with the Greek and Yugoslavian resistance raging and the war in Africa and and soviet union to to keep on Germany was reluctant to open a new front.

My great grandfather served in the Italian army during ww2. Although I never met him (he died in the 90s, right before I was born), he must have used some of those guns :D. He was just 22 when he was sent to the front in 1940. He also fought in Sicily against the allied landings. But he wasn't a fascist: he didn't like fascism, but he was forced to join the army, and he luckily survived the war, so he could go back to his girlfriend waiting for him at home, and then had a daughter (my grandmother).

The Glisenti 1910 was issued only when either 1934 or 1935 models were unavailable, but rarely to the Carabinieri, since even in WW1 they used the Bodeo 1889 revolver, which worked better than the "poor man's Luger" as the Glisenti was named. Beretta 1934 calibre is also interchangeable with the .380 Auto, which is why it gained quite a bit of notoriety in the US after WW2 Also, the cartridge of the Beretta MAB38 was not the standard 9x19 Parabellum, but a specific variant called the 9mm Fiocchi, which was dimensionally identical to the 9x19, but had much more powder; you could use a 9 Para round, but it would be prone to misfeeds

Italian here, former 1st Lt. of the italian Armored Cavalry (Leopard 1A2 tanks) and Carabinieri. SRCM 35 grenades were still in use 20 years ago and I threw some in training (reduced explosive charge). They have indeed 2 safeties, one is a pin, that you remove before the launch. The 2nd safety is a metallic part that the grenade loses in flight (think of a metallic wing that the centrifugal force of the launch and the resistance of the air detach from the main body of the grenade). At this point the grenade is primed to explode on impact with the enemy or the ground/obstacle hit. A friend of mine literally vaporized a target of 2-inch plywood with his grenade. Another 2 safeties are automated and guarantee that: 3) the grenade detonates only on impact and not in flight 4) The grenade is deactivated in case of no explosion on impact (in this case there is no evidence of the 4th safety activation and it is VERY recommended to let the bomb squad detonate it with some explosive. Now the SRCM 35 grenade is phased out and we use a "normal" time-fused grenade en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OD_82/SE

En bloc clips offer a definite advantage in speed and reliability in reloading, great features in active combat situations, especially with gloved hands. This was factor w/ Commission 88, Carcano, Dutch/Romanian Mannlichers, Mondragon and of course M-1 Garand. Not all rifle use is in active combat scenarios, sometimes with only a few rounds fired, and inability to 'top off magazine' as well as that in most cases, rifle either a single shot or inoperative without a clip negates the earlier advantages. (BTW: Never single chamber load a Carcano. In many cases bolt won't close and those that will over stress extractor, that is deigned for cartridge to go under extractor, not have extractor snap over base or cartridge.) The myth of the ping of the M-1 clip signaling to enemy of empty rifle is dispelled by anyone, without ear protection, within 25 meters of an M-1 being file, easily dispelled. Ironically, the much maligned Moisin, around since 1891, in the form the M1944 carbine, is still officially in use, as seen in Venezuelan news footage, in hands of the "Collectivos" a paramilitary group used suppress masses, to allow continued rule of the inept Madero regime.

Derrick the gr8...: Very simplistic, cliched answer, ignoring reality of situation. Mussolini was a socialist, branding his version as "Fascism". From his initial rise to power, he began spending lots of money, buying votes and support, with free health care, universal education, infrastructure rebuild, and his version of social security , that Roosevelt eventually copied. All went so well, he was an international hero, with American songs even positively referencing him. There were so many Americans of Italian descent in US, Mussolini boasted a natural US-Italian alliance. Like any Ponzi scheme, Mussolini ran out of others people's money. There are pictures of Mussolini and his wife giving their wedding rings in public fund raisers, topically described to help Ethiopian effort, but in reality to help with bankrupted economy. In 1936, looking for resource, European style, Il Duce looked to colonialization much as UK, France, Belgium, etc. had done to loot other countries for money, for centuries. (UK has one of world's largest gold reserves, yet there's not a single gold mine in England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland.) The golden age of colonialism had past, and Mussolini's African adventures turned the world against him, including US. Unlike Soviet Socialism, German National Socialism, or later Chinese Communism, Mussolini could not logistically exterminate large masses of Italians and seize their assets, as well eliminating their drain on system, as a temporary fix. The ultimate alliance with Germany soured many, if not most Italians, who especially in Northern Italy, despised Germanic/Austrians due to centuries of domination and more recent WW1 factors. Fast forward to WW2, the German National Socialists, NAZI's, used Italians, as well as Hungarian and other troops, as cannon fodder, to soften Soviet fronts, saving German lives. Much of 'incompetancy' charges result from this sacrificing of Italian lives by Axis leaders. This was a main component of Italians turning against Mussolini, often ignored by historians. (Their sons, husbands, brothers, fathers, cousins, etc. were dying to spare German 'supermen's' lives?) Italy surrendered in 1943, German National Socialists occupied Italy, much to hatred of most Italians, Allied liberation a well documented situation that won't be repeated here. Free Italian and Communist Italian resistance, aided Allies, who fought effectively, per many Allied reports, when motivated to rid Italy of the NAZIs. Lacking any further strong security, Mussolini succumbed to angry citizenry, unable to stay in power by force, like Madero is currently doing in Venezuela or Castro brothers in Cuba, hence he met well deserved fate. This is a very abbreviated, recap of reality of that era. I've known many Italians, of all political persuasions, especially elderly Italians that lived through the times, and this is a more 3 dimensional understand of what really happened.

Unfortunate that you did not discuss the most recognizable Carcano--the cavalry carbine variant--that was featured in tons of Italian contemporary military art and posters, as well as propaganda photos from the front line. They even made a child's toy version of it which you can still find available in some markets. Definitely an iconic weapon.

The grenade launcher system was called the Tromboncino 28. It required the Carcano bolt to be removed from the rifle to be able to shoot grenades in single shot. Kind of like the M1903 Pedersen device.

Charlie McCameron I think the three biggest things holding back Italy were military leadership, infrastructure, and weaponry (so I guess everything BUT the soldiers lol). If there wasn’t favouritism in command and Italy didn’t use crappy designs (for the most part) and was actually able to produce good designs in large quantities, maybe Italy would’ve been a better asset to the Axis in WW2.

Honestly, a lot of the issues with the Carcanos performance could have been solved if they had updated the round to a spitzer from a bottle nose . The action was essentially a clone of the one used on the old Gewehr M1888 "Commission" rifle, so it was fairly solid, but they could have done what the Germans did with the 88 and add a inner mechanism that allows you to eject the enbloc clip rather than let it fall out of the bottom, like the Austrian Mannlichers. That right there could have solved the issues with dirt and mud clogging the action. The machine guns, though, just needed to be scrapped.

@@DLBBALL Things that held Italy back was even by 1939, they still didnt have enough food to feed their people, the political system was a huge drainage to Italy, and Mussolini was way to ambitious, if they wouldnt have joined the war until 1940, or even 1941 they would've probably faired a lot better. Also they should've probably went with a smaller, better equipped army rather then trying to field as many men as they did.

The 1891 rifle was an excellent firearm. It had progressive twist rifling that increased accuracy. The 6.5 round that it fired was mild recoiling and at the same time it's fairly high ballistic coefficient bullet maintained velocity at long ranges. The blunt bullet enhanced terminal performance, and it's length to diameter ratio caused it to tumble on impact. The safety was also good because in the safe position it blocked the sights, so there was no mistaking as to the safety being on or off during combat. All in all, it was a good bolt action battle rifle.
