Quick PSA about writing: The thing about loving books is that it often goes hand in hand with wanting to try out writing yourself sometimes. The tricky part about this is that because most book lovers have accumulated such a high standard from their consumption, they often haven't put what they've learnt into practise. This leaves you with the awkward situation of being knowledgeable enough to be aware that what you're writing is bad but not being knowledgeable enough to know how to fix it. I've gone through this (still am tbh) and im sure others have too. What you need to remember is that writing is a skill that is honed and crafted over time, not some talent you're born with, much like other art forms. The only way to get better is to try it. And after you've tried it, practise it. It's hard, but that's what makes it worth it.

I'm 37 and I still look at fall as being a season of renewal! I think the crisp air just energizes me and it's the sign of the fun of summer being over and getting back to longer days indoors, etc. This is when I usually try new things, new skills, settle into better routines.

Tip for the candle problem: refill them yourself! ✨ I will usually keep the glasses and collect leftover wax from other candles as well, buy some wicks and do my own candles. Also you can use your scent yourself! It's really really easy believe me :)

I get fall as a beginning because of the harvest season 🌾🍂 I know a lot of cultures see that as a beginning since harvesting means that the land is bare and ready to start fresh again 😄 (also a helpful tip with strong scented candles is to bring coffee beans and smell them after each candle - it helps neutralize the smell and keeps your nose from hurting)

You can use boiling water to get the bottom of the wax out of your candles and you can clean out the glass jars and keep them. You can use the wax that’s left in the very bottom and wax warmers if you have that at all.
@colourfulkatie145

Used candle jar tip! I usually clean them out and use them for storing things like pencils/bookmarks/art supplies, vases, and put small plants in them (keeping the pant in a the plastic pot and just setting it in the pretty jar). To get the wax out, I boil water in my tea kettle and fill the jar up to the brim with boiling water. It melts the left over wax and solidifies on top of the water as it cools (sometimes need to do this twice). Then if you have a wax warmer, you can use the left over wax for that!

And here in Italy autumn is like a shiny pokémon: there's summer, then abrupt winter, no in-between anymore. Halfway through september and we still hit almost 30°C where I live + lots of humidity all year long. Watching vlogs of places where autumn exists and is coming in strong makes me feel at ease, the gray skies really give me hope for a good, cold winter this year, where I may be able to put on my warmest and fanciest clothes and drink a cup of warm tea/chocolate in a cozy blanket :)

I like to use empty candle containers to store things because with fabric and elastic you can make some what of a lid. They also make for perfect wrapping for weirdly shapped gifts and then the get a pretty vase to use afterwards. Just make sure to clean them extra well.

Tip for the candles - you can go to a craft store to buy new wax and wicks for your diy candles. They also sell candle scents separately. If you have used your candle up, you can pour hot water right into the jar, the wax will melt and rise to the top of the surface, it is easy to remove it that way.

if you want to take the time to get all of the leftover wax out, wash the soot off and take off the label you could reuse your candle glasses as just regular glasses to drink out of. i especially think the blue colour would look awesome and then after a while you’d have a cupboard filled with different coloured/shaped/sized drinking glasses 😊

Leonie, for the focaccia you should have consulted an Italian, not BBC XD. Anyway, the trick is to let it grow for a couple of days. My recipe is: 500g of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 7g of dry yeast (Dr. Oeteker), around 300mL of water. Mix everything together and put to rest in a bowl. Cover it with flour and try not to let it dry. Maybe cover the bowl with cellophan or a towel. Every few hours you mix it again. The day after you can put it in a tray and cook it. Set the oven to the maximum! A typical thing we do is also to put olive oil on top (just a bit, don't drown it in oil or it will fry in the oven).

I reuse my empty candles jars around my house as containers. First you put the candle jar in the freezer only for a few hours, take it out and gentle pry out the remaining wax with a spoon. Leave the jar on the counter until it warms back up to room temperature (you don't want to put cold glass into warm water). The next step I do is fill a bowl or the sink (if I'm doing a bunch), with warm soapy water. Let your jars soak for a few hours. This should do two things. First, help scrub off any remaining wax residue and second, peel off the jar paper label. Now, you should have a clean pretty jar (hopefully you kept the lid). I use mine in the bathroom for cotton swabs/balls/etc or in the kitchen to store wood picks, kitchen tools. Oh and if they are clear jars you can use them as little terrariums! So many uses really. The hardest part is just cleaning them out.

When I'm done with a candle and I want to keep the jar, I just pour boiling water into it to melt the wax away and then run it through the dishwasher. I like to use them to store q-tips and cotton balls and other odds and ends, or as a propagation vessel for plants :)

Same as you use old porcelain mugs as pots, you can use candles holders as pots! Just make sure to put your soil into a plastic pot with holes first (can't remember the name for them in English). Also, use them as a jar for anything you like, I use them as sort of organizers in the drawers for things like scrunchies, earphones, coins, random bits and bobs. (to wash the leftover wax you can freeze the candle for some time, then scrape the wax out)

For the soot problem with the candle, trim the wick down each time before you light it, even at the start of a new one. And if you notice it being sooty again while burning, blow it out and trim it again. Also, I melt the wax out at the end and then recycle the glass jar, messy work, but it makes me feel better knowing it's not all going straight in the landfill.

One thing that could be done with your candle remnants is melting down the leftover wax and combining it with old dryer lint into little balls or cubes (a large ice cube tray works nicely) and then you get quick and convenient fire starters. For campfires and such 🙂 As for the container, perhaps it could find a second purpose as a plant pot?

Also doesn’t help that I work in a job where I will have to eventually talk/present to clients…😬 but that’s not for a long time but I’m still dreading it. I totally get what you mean about being weirdly calm when doing the actual thing that was scaring you. I think it’s the anticipation and the not knowing that’s sometimes more scary than the actual thing itself.
