This video really show the whole process of thinking while creating a material - so many details that you have to think about! outstanding!!! - i've got more practicall question when using 3dsmax + Vray to interior projects. Is it common to use tools such as baking materials into objects, when using high poly and low poly models? when we have scenes with many elements with advanced materials they are really heavy and hard to use. I've seen this technique especially when creating scenes for games but i was wondering if it's also used for interior designs with lots of zooming on particular parts of the room - book of shelves, kitchen sidetables etc.

Hi, Thank you for your comment. It's a good question. I've never baked a material into an object. I just don't have the need for it. The reason you would do it in games is to reduce lag in the game, it would mean the program doessn't have to calculate lighting and shadows, as all of that data is already in the material. However, when I'm rendering I want to see the changes in the liight on the object as I change the light, and I want to see how my changes alter the look and feel of the fabric. If I'm baking textures I'm not going to be able to have such a broad scope of control over the scene. I do believe it has benefits and I do think about it and I would use it if I thought I needed to. But for now I don't use it. If I had a computer which didn't have a lot of power and if I had a large scene, then I would consider using it. Usually when I have such a scene I approach it by multi-resing the objects, basically reducing the poly count massively, and then I reduce the texture size, so I have small jpegs with the texture. There's no point in having a 4k texture when you only see two pixels of it. Best, Tom
