The Mindset You Used To Stop Drinking
If you are suffering from boredom after getting sober, it can often come down to mindset.
Having the correct mindset when you stop drinking makes a huge difference.
If you start your journey feeling deprived, you’re much more likely to experience boredom.
That being said, if you are able to start your sober journey with a feeling of happiness, these challenges can be easily overcome.
Keeping a positive mindset can make all the difference.
Why Do People Think Alcohol Relieves Boredom?
People often say they drink alcohol to “relieve boredom”.
And then, when they stop drinking and feel bored, it can confirm their views.
“Surely if I’m bored without alcohol, then alcohol makes my life less boring” they think to themselves.
Let’s explore this in more detail, by taking a look at alcohol’s marketing.
The Marketing Of Alcohol
Look at any alcohol advertisement.
Words like sophistication, confidence, and charisma come to mind.
If you believe these advertisements, alcohol can make you come across as a more interesting, fun, and exciting person.
But, is it true?
When I see a motorcycle marketed to embody adrenaline, adventure, and excitement, I believe it.
Why?
Because I’ve experienced riding a motorcycle and I know it’s true. I know the product does what the marketing says it will do.
I’m deliberately choosing to ride a motorcycle because it’s fun.
Similarly, if I see an advertisement for a new DSLR camera, and the advert shows creativity, exploration, and moments, I believe it!
If I buy those products and I use them, the marketing has served its purpose. I feel good about my buying decision and the product has added value to my life.
But when alcohol is marketed as this fantastic product that can enhance your life, that’s another story.

Honestly, that was the hardest thing about stopping drinking for me. I was really worried about withdrawals but I didn't have any, the only bummer was I was bored and didn't know what to do with my time. So I am reading a book at night and I am getting just as used to that just like I got used to drinking.

And keep practicing sobriety after 30 days clean time. It's not impossible and is achievable.

Several years ago, an American journalist decided to interview people who had won big piles of money in the lottery more than five years ago. He asked them what made them happy now versus what they thought would make them happy one week after they won the money. The people said they thought that buying ten new sets of clothes, a new car and a new house would make them happy. However, it turns out that that kind of stuff did not work. What they found out is that setting a huge goal that would take multiple years to achieve and working on that goal steadily is what truly made them happy.
@Onlinesully

it's all well known stuff. the money isn't the problem. money is a helpful foundation and security. money is great to have, and it allows us to do other things. what we do with our time makes a difference.
@lynxfirenze4994
@lynxfirenze4994 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's a common thing. People fixate on the money and the things when what they really want most of the time is the freedom. If you gave me a stupid amount of money you're absolutely right I'd buy a bunch of unnecessary but cool stuff as well as more useful things like a house etcetera. But once I got through the initial euphoric "Hey I can do this all of a sudden" I'd probably just focus on things like my writing or friendships instead. For me at least the greatest benefit of a major windfall would be the 50+ hours a week on the low end presently dominated by having a job that could finally be freed up.

Hello Leon.... tomorrow will be my 100 days of NOT drinking alcohol! I am or should i say was a binge drinker, one drink was never enough for me and i could not understand why that was, when they banned cigarettes in English pubs all those years ago i gave up drinking and smoking at the same time, and i had no problem doing so, in fact it was easier than i thought. I was like that for a good few years as i could not get pissed as i would want a smoke that is why i gave them up at the same time, now that i have conquered my addiction to tobacco i started to drink again but in moderation but that did not last for long! So as time went by my binge drinking got worse and worse. Then in a moment of clarity i said to myself i would stop drinking completely, to say it was difficult would be a understatement but with grit & a lot of will power i am at 14 week's. I have been watching your video's and they have helped me immensely so thank you for that. My Mantra is written on the fridge door, so i see it everyday. "ALCOHOL IS JUST ETHANOL WHICH IS POISON". It serves as both a reminder of how far i have come and how far i have yet to travel.

Hi am from India.. It has been 8 month now of leaving alcohol... The the day before my marriage was my last drink... I used to listen to lot of music while drinking at a very loud sound often disturbing my neighbour's and getting a lot of complain's about the same while enjoying a lot.But now after my 8 months of marriage I have left alcohol with the support of my wife... I have tried everything from doing exercises, watching movies,going to an AA meeting, spending time with my friends,playing pc games for a long time, going to some beautiful places.. But my question is even then I feel bored but why is it so? I sometimes feel really bored and feels like taking the glass of alcohol, going to a bar which possibly I cannot do anymore in my life... I really wonder how people leave alcohol and stay happy.. .

I also quietly agree with a lot of what you said about alcohol/drunks. I've never found being truly drunk to be fun or interesting, and the after effects are pretty bad. I would say more but honestly this isn't a place to speak positively of alcohol any more than a methadone clinic is a place to speak positively of heroin so I wish everyone reading this the best with their journey, it's never easy to take back control.

Quit drinking. Started reading. I read 52 books a year now. Creativity, productivity, energy, gym results, anxiety, depression, lower bp, lower hear rate, clearer thinking...should I go on? Better everything; relationships, conversations, sleeping, memory, running my business. All of the temporary boredom that a couple of hours each night subsided isn't worth the trade of drinking again. I never swore off alcohol completely, but I wouldn't consider alcohol being a "problem" in my life. It catches up with us all though. I was drinking about 2-5 drinks a night. I wont say "I'll never drink again", but why start up?

I like to think that boredom its just a normal feeling of a adult life. Because we were always drinking, we just forget it how to deal with it. Just relax, its not that bad.

Glad I quit but the places I used to go are less enticing, hanging with drunk people is not fun, skipping restaurants is a lot easier since I’m not as hungry and most returante food is not nearly as good when you’re sober. I save a lot more money now and only want to do active things like walking, sports, games etc.

I'm not being a stubborn person, but it is not advertising that makes me think that drinking takes away my boredom; Drinking Takes Away My Boredom: FACT. It's not placebo effect or psychosomatic, again; It's a Fact. That's why with all or most drugs you get a true high effect and that is why with all or most drugs one gets a crash. Even with coffee one gets a pick me up then we get a crash. The crash is Positive evidence that we experienced a high. But, I will try everything else you said; so I can stop Drinking.

I feel the same as you but with my job I saw people, young people too 20-30-40s die of liver disease. It’s a slow painful death. I drank for years and for the last few years work 7 on 7 off and drank on all my 7 off 2 weeks a month. The last time recently when I went back to work after drinking for 7 in a row my right side hurt and my stomach ulcer was re-activated. What made me stop was continuing to see these people in liver failure and disease, and my side hurting. I figured I was going to stop drinking one way or the other. Dead people can’t drink.

To my mind, things like (statistically friggin dangerous) motorcycle driving, alcohol, eating Snickers (similarly dopamine-releasing as motorcycle-riding or having free range sex actually), overworking, caffeine-drinking are all quite similar in terms of numbing you down and keeping you away from your spiritual core topics. So why not getting down to the REAL core issue…?

This may work for the average human. I workout 2 to 3 times a day ,play the piano ,firefighter for 4 days and bored out of my mind. I agree when you are young being active can help but as I have aged I can not do half of what used to make me never even considered drinking. One example is bmx biking. I went riding the other day but at 51 I could barely do any tricks and my body was in so much pain. Yes it was fun but painful. The gym is kinda the same. I used to compete at set God of benching more. Yep that worked until I got older and can no longer lift heavy due to injuries. The piano was my next shot of a nee hobby and goal. I still do it but after 1 to 2 hours my wrists are hurting. Age is holding my back unfortunately. If I had kids then I can also see being to busy to drink but I never found a wife so no kids. Money is no longer a goal because I lost l my money and house when my dad's business went under ad I was an investor and employee I lost it all. Yes I ha e my own business and I firefighter but the math doesn't add up. I woul be 80 before could afford a simple down payment. Wwll off to work. I ran 2 miles today, Worked on a new business project, went to the gym, cooked my meals for the best 2 days and practiced the paini for 30 minutes. Btw even tried meditation. I went to 2 shrinks and both of them said wow all that and you are still bored? Yep. Thanks for the positive video.

Hey man, even at 51 you could still find a partner right? If that's what you really want of course. I recently had a contractor come round my house and he was early 50s and not too long ago married someone 20 years younger and had (more) kids with her! I can relate as I'm 41 now and no kids yet and recently broke up a relationship that was going in that direction. I feel really down about it but I still will try and pursue that goal again. Otherwise, do you have friends and family you can hang out with? Maybe get a dog? It sounds like you are doing great things already but focused a lot on physical stuff (even piano). Do you like less physical passtimes? Reading, movies, video games... nothing wrong with those things to pass some time. Or just going on long walks instead of gym. There's also loads of online courses you can take to learn just about anything you could be interested in. Best of luck!

@@snakedogman Hey man. Pretty much anything that involves sitting still is boring to me. My family is boring they just want to go out to eat. I would rather go bowling or go to the range. Trust me I wish I was better at relaxing. I just had surgery And less than a week after major surgery I'm back in the gym even though I'm taking it easy I can't stay away. The last 2 days I've been taking people's advice and trying to relax and all I do is lay in bed and watch KZbin videos. My shoulder and back hurts from just laying around all day. I do walk twice A-day p2 miles each tine but after that back to sitting in bed. I am clear to lift very lightly but that just doesn't do anything for me mentally. Before the female thing things have changed a lot. Younger women today have cell phones and they give their number out to numerous guys. Most women would rather spend time on social media than actually going out and talking to someone in person. As far as older women they usually Are too busy with their kids to be able to go on spontaneous dates and road trips. One thing I teach my younger friends it's to never settle until you're happy with your find. I've spent a total of 16 years with 3 different women that I was comfortable with but was not in love with. Don't mind spelling or grammatical errors I'm using voice to text. Thanks for the feedback
