I was fortunate enough to purchase one of these heads and for a steal of a price. Without a doubt my favourite rock amp. I love that the OD channels are more open than on the regular JVM because it gives more versatility as one can always boost those channels to compress them. This amp is a real keeper.

I pre ordered mine and waited months until it was released. I still have it. I still use it. I don't own any other guitar amps at the moment. This amp was created while using a Marshall 1960B cabinet and that is what I use. It's what Satriani uses too, saying in a video that they didn't work with different speaker options when designing this. I have to say, it sounds more monstrous with the 1960B cab than it does with the cab used here. I like what I am hearing here, but the 1960B has been my favorite cab for decades and it really brings out the character of this head. Side note: Former Marshall CEO and chief engineer Santiago Alvarez said in an interview that the Satriani Marshall, which has both Joe Satriani and Jim Marshall's signature on it is the last Marshall released during the Jim Marshall era. It's the last amp released while he was alive and it's the last Marshall amp to have Jim Marshall's signature on it. Other amps that have his signature today were first released prior to the JVM410HJS. It's true that the 2 OD channels are the same, but as seen here, they can be dialed in quite differently.

I've got both a stock and a modded JVM410HJS and absolutely love them both. It's worth noting that OD1 and OD2 are exactly the same on this amp so you can have differently EQ'd versions of the same sound. The Mid Switch lets you basically toggle between the standard JVM410H's OD1 and OD2 voices. So, options wise, this is sort of like a six channel amp.

@LeonTodd, more QC here :D. When you engage the Crunch RED you have the loop on and probably the FX Return Level on the back is set high so you have a volume boost. Otherwise the change in levels when switching channels is minimal. Also, yes, you are very right that when lowering the channel volumes it gets darker (except the Clean channel). It's designed like that to remove a bit of the high end when playing at bedroom levels. The Crunch channel has bit more of filtering than the OD channels.
@LeonTodd

It's my current amp...... yes it does not do the ultra high gain thing as well as the regular JVM, and it definitely needs a TS type of boost to chug, as any gain past 5 tends to become too wooly on the bass, but for leads it really cuts through, and the noise gates work very well. It's a dead silent amp !

This and the JSX120 sig amps are definitely synonymous with Satriani's tonal preferences. Richer and vocal-like mid range like you said, and quite tighter on the low end compared to the regular JVM. The cleans are more fun to play around with this version, no doubt. Also I find it interesting that OD1 and 2 are carbon clones of each other. It's an uncommon design choice but I can see why they did so with Mid Shift switches. Makes sense if you want separate high gain rhythms/leads without actual circuit differences in a live setting

Leon, you have the most expressive face ever. We know within seconds, without words, when you're completely digging something. :) I'd love the real thing, but the closest I'll ever get to this is the Satch JVM in Amplitube. But they did a REALLY good job of accurately modeling Joe's personal amp. If you can't find the Marshall tones you're looking for with this amp, there's something with you. :)

Great demo! I own one as well and paired it with an Orange PPC412. It sounds killer. Channel one takes preamp pedals so well in green mode and in orange mode it really shines not just with the slightest push from certain overdrive pedals but also on it's own. Generally speaking this amp has far less gain in the OD channels than the original JVM, which makes the JS far more usable and tighter. But if you push the OD channels on the JS version as well, let's say with a TS Style pedal or for example the string singer side from a duellist if you're not into that TS mid push, you get really crushing metal tones. Not to mention, this amp is freaking loud... And it's heavy of course... But if you've ever carried a Diezel Herbert MK3 you don't worry about the JVM anymore. Have fun!! 😊

Spot on in regards to the difference in the 410 OD1 Orange and the Satch model. The stock model is just a little more out of control and knarly...which I like and why I let the Satch model go. However I do like the dual Gates and the straight serial loop on the Satch. That said OD1 Orange is where I live on the 410, it's just straight modded Marshall tone. Overall the Satch model is a more refined version of the 410.

The Satriani model sounds like an amp Marshall should have been offering standard, but other builders had already been making. The gain channels remind me of the Shiva in the sense that channel up/master down has a *huge* effect versus the other way around. I'd play my Shiva with the channel down and the master up so it sounded less compressed.

Thanks for the demo Leon 🙂I own a 410HJS, and its really interesting to hear you demo it, and to see how you ran different settings than I do. I tend to end up on a setting I like then am guilty of not experimenting by dialing the gain down etc. I'm sure you knew this, but to the punters out there OD1 and OD2 are exactly the same - which is great, I love that. I absolutely love the red crunch channel, gain about noon, boosted with an SD1 to tighten the low end. With the mids up, its very much like the AFD Marshall sound. I'd be interested to hear from @Santiago Alverez about the similarities with that channel - am I just hearing things?

You're onto something about the AFD Marshall sound, I do remember someone saying that some aspects of that amp was brought into Joe's signature amp indeed.
@santiall73
@santiall73 Жыл бұрын
you are very right. When we were starting to work on the HJS I overhauled the Crunch channel completely and the RED mode was pretty much an AFD clone, later on we 'smoothed' it a little bit but the DNA is there. Initially Joe wasn't 100% convinced but it recorded and blended so well with the band that we left it there. He uses it in a few songs.

very cool stuff, owned the jvm410 for a while, some great tones, huge almost too much gain on tap, OD1 orange was a favourite, but so much gain on tap , to get the body/warmth from the gain it'd have to be pushed past 11 o clock, but at that point it was already feedback hell =0 the JS adds a really useful noisegate to the mix, and i think smoothens things out a bit more, less noisy perhaps overall the feature set/possibilities on the JVM is nuts though, sort of like '12' channels , fully midi switchable, i'd say almost like a great buffet of marshall tones/amps over the years (jcm2000, 900, 800, plexi, jmp etc..) i tend to prefer single channel style amps , JCM800 , JMP style of things boosted with pedals, tape delay in front of a dirty amp is a thing of beauty =0

Main difference is the CHOKE !!! I put one in my standard JVM... and sound like a real Marshall ❤

too bad, all you needed to do was turn up the MV on the standard. JS appreciates having his name on your amp tho.

I added the c83 bypass, choke negative feedback mods to my JVM and got it push the power section harder like an 800. It sounded too constrained stock.

@LeodTodd. Great Videos! I'm running through the series now. This video made that JVM410HJS sound soooo sweet that I bought one immediately. Unfortunately, I played it with a very similar PRS custom24 and it sounds nothing like yours. Mine is bassy and not crisp/clear in the low notes. Kind of muddy. The amp looks in great condition with no popping/cracking/static/hum noises. I'm no tube expert at all but my other Marshall DSL20 sounds 100x better in tone. I'll take any advice from anyone on this. :)

What speakers are you using? I'm using 25w greenbacks here and it's obviously a mic'd tone vs what you hear in the room

@@LeonTodd It's a Randall Cab with Jaguar 80W speakers. I was just surprised that my Marshall DSL20 was sooo clear and punchy in comparison. I guess I'll order myself a 1960A today. :) I'm guessing your pickups may also be superior to mine for tone and sustain.

I own the regular 410 and found I didn't really like the sd1 with it.. I know crazy huh? But what I do like is the mxr il diavolo with it... that od is criminally underrated.. I'm shocked nobody ever brings that od up.. and yes I agree.. od 1 orange is where the magic is in both these amps

Funny you say that, I have one as well and it sounds better with an od808 than an sd-1

So Joe always says all his albums from Time and before are all 100w Marshalls really clean with a DS-1 into them. Wonder if using the clean on these with an old DS-1 can get you close

You do know that OD1 and OD2 are exactly the same channel, they are OD1 from the standard JVM410. The mid shift makes either or both the OD2 from the standard 410, that's according to the Marshall manual.

@Santiago Alvarez could you please explain why did you decide to incorporate a chock in the JS version vs the regular version? was it a budget or tone decision?
@santiall73
@santiall73 Жыл бұрын
Hi, definitley not a budget decision neither here nor in the regular JVM. The HJS has less gain, it also has different power supply filtering and feedback than the standard JVM (and also because there were so many people asking for it haha) so why not :D

I thought the mid-shift was only for OD1 when I owned this amp. Oh well, I ended up keeping the 410H over the 410HJS, but both kick serious ass!

Different channel voicings, output transformer choke, noise gates, no reverb. Clean channel is a lot cleaner. Crunch channel is very different. Comparison vid soon.

I don’t get the hype around this amp and especially not the ridiculous prices they’re fetching. Satch only uses these as a pedal platform anyway, so not sure how much anyone can read into his input on the OD modes. A modded 410H has more versatility and options than one of these at a fraction of the price.
