Leopard Seal Encounter

During the Jan. 29th, 2013 Antarctic Classic trip aboard the MS Expedition, some of us got to experience this once in a lifetime encounter with a leopard seal having a tough time finding a place to rest. This encounter was filmed in Pleneau Bay.

since I just watched a video where one of these animals tore apart a penguin and turned it into flesh confetti, I wouldnt want to lean over the boat while that seal was swooshing about like these folks were doing.

They’re lucky he didn’t decide to snatch one of their arms as they hung over the boat. Leopard seals are no joke. They’re apex predators in the Antarctic. They could easily kill a person in seconds. They would most likely pull you down to 100 ft or more very quickly as they savaged you. Has happened to a diver before

Yup, not apex predator, they're hunted down and a part of orcas diet Not saying they won't be able to kill a human with few effort Leopard seals usually don't attack humans without a reason because they don't consider us as food and even then tend to send warnings beforehand (tourists tend to always find the way of pissing animals off though....)

First off-- that boat is overloaded,. Secondly they are damned lucky that seal was not really hungry. It would be more than capable of dragging one of these fools off that boat into the water. It amazes me how really stupid tourists are concerning predators. As if their paying for a ride somehow makes them invulnerable to predatory realities.

One dragged a young girl on an expedition in 2003 I think, took her 200 feet down, no problem. It could have been alot different for those ignorant twats

Worst of all, the water is freezing and hypothermia would probably kill anyone in 5 minutes if they just fell in. Leo Seal would think. "Am I supposed to eat that?" I'd watch from the big boat with binoculars from my cabin with the heat on. Better still drone footage. Ok I'd watch it here on KZbin. Hey it's cold down there. A few years ago, a leopard seal grabbed a lady researcher in a drysuit and killed her. Better keep your distance but still beautiful animal anyway. Like it's namesake.
