As a kid,I got a male praying mantis and he was not agressive. I fed him meal worms.When he saw me,he would go to the glass and try to climb it to be taken out and be fed. I think whip tailless scorpians and viaagerroons are also pretty interesting. Clint's reptiles has videos on both of these.

Regarding the flies, keep the pupae at room temp, wait for them to hatch, then put them in the fridge! This has worked out much better for me for months now. Once hatched they last a while in the fridge 😊 Oh and house them in a smoothie cup so they have room with some substrate in the bottom 👍🏻

Thank You Ma'am! For explaining the eating challenges, and how you sought to resolve it. Sorry you lost one of you jumpers Ma'am! I have not had anyone respond, so my list of people to ask questions to, has become sparse. I guess ill make it quick. Live in zone 4 & 5 here in Iowa. We are entering the beginning of Fall. Fall is when i bring in all my plants. A few Dwarf Banana Tree, and the rest are Elephant Ears. Indoors my windows are full of Cacti & Succulents. Also outdoors, is an Orange Spot Audax. It has made a thick "nest" but curls up and sleeps outside it. If i brought it indoor, it would certainly escape hibernation, and our killer winters. It would have all the warm sunlight it wants as there are no seasons indoors; and any windowsill would be a fortress due to plants. My question is mainly this. Once i bring something inside, its my sole responsibility to care for it and make sure its cared for. Its a disruption to their given programmed life. Would it be more harm to bring it in, than to just let it stay its course in nature, with a 50/50 chance of surviving winter? Aphids are always a pain to deal with indoors, so its food for the Jumper. Flies usually die off, so i will assume i will need to provide food for it. How often do they eat? I know these buggers are brought out of the wild, and put into captivity, so i just want to make sure that if i do, it can have as much of a free life as if it were outdoors, minus the predators! And If all is good so to speak, and seeing baby jumpers all over now, would that "nest" possibly be housing little jumpers waiting to "hatch"? Sorry for rambling, and thank you in advance. PS: Dont have to feel the need to answer. I guess wjat im seeking is general knowledge, or guidence or just thoughts. lol 😁

I find the flies don’t hatch if I put them in the fridge first. So, the place I order from do them in smaller amounts, I let them all hatch and then keep them in the fridge and give them a jelly pot and they last for ages. I’m in the uk as well so if you want me to share where I get mine from let me know :) they always hatch 🤍
@leopardgeckotalk Жыл бұрын
Yeah I found that with wax worms too, if I put them in the fridge they'd pretty much just die. I should try the jelly pot thing with the flies though, thank you :)

Hey, as someone who has been in the mantis hobby for a while, I'm more than willing to help. So I'm not sure where you're sourcing your flies from. There's a chance they may not be a reliable one. Pupation times also depend on the fly. Calliphora vomitoria can 2ish weeks to emerge for example. It best to buy these guys as spikes since you can them those in your fridge for up to 6 weeks. Also consider starting a red runner colony. These little guys are amazing feeders for mantises. If you need help finding some, I have a few people in mind.

I've developed a routine for blue bottle flies. When the larvae arrive, I split the container. I put about 2/3 into the fridge (to slow their growth and pupation) and leave out 1/3. The 1/3 at room temp will pupate, and I put the now-grown flies into the fridge, feeding them off as needed. When they start running low, I go into the refrigerated 2/3s (larvae/pupae) and divide the portion in half, leaving half back in the fridge, and letting the other half stay at room temp to pupate. Basically, their success pupating within the fridge is low(er). I've noticed that if I leave larvae/pupae in the fridge (for long periods) very few hatch out into flies. So you're better off leaving them at room temp to become flies, popping them in the fridge to slow them down, and then feeding them off. (Short turns in the fridge don't seem to stop the larvae from pupating if/when they're put back at room temp.)
@leopardgeckotalk Жыл бұрын
Yeah this is basically what I did, I kept a few out, and split up the group to put some in the fridge, but I the first few hatched and after that the little groups I've taken out the fridge have come to nothing :'(
@ProfJCsCritters Жыл бұрын
@@leopardgeckotalk Yes, I wish people would write more guide to blue bottle flies! I think there's a point where fridging just kills the pupae, but I don't know exactly how long that takes. It works for short periods to delay/slow the timeline, but at some point, it seems to just kill them.
