Do you love the look of granny squares, but you don’t love weaving in all those color change ends? I am a granny square lover and I have made my fair share of granny square projects. And I’ve spent a lot of time weaving in ends after all those color changes!
But Red Heart may have come to the rescue with their brand new All In One Granny Square Yarn. There’s been a lot of buzz about it. But I’ve purposely kept myself away from the reviews so that I could form my own unbiased opinion about it. In this video I will test the yarn, share my favorite patterns and give you the pros and cons!

Passionknit Kelsie was able to do it, but she did a different pattern so it defeated the purpose, lol. So yeah it seems like more work than it's worth, but if you can finally figure out the right patten/tension then I guess it could be useful.

I bought some of this as a new crocheter and didn’t even notice the wrapper said it was for granny squares. All I saw were the great colors. I was about halfway through making a scarf with it when I realized it. The scarf came out great, but I don’t think I’ll make many granny squares with it. I don’t have the patience for all that frogging and redoing. I’d rather weave in ends.

I love the yarn. It only took about 3 squares for me to begin to see a pattern of which rows I had to be a little looser on and which need to be a little tighter. I also switched to my own way of making granny squares and learned what I need to do with my tension with that pattern. I think people should try more than just 1 or 2 squares before they give up on it because once you figure it out what works for each row, you rarely have to frog more than a few stitches and it does end up saving time. The KZbinrs I’ve seen who give it a try with more than just one square also seem to get into a rhythm that works for them. I would encourage anyone who has already bought the yarn to give it a fighting chance with a few squares before giving up.

I was one of the testers for this yarn and I too found that the yarn was frustrating. Although the idea sounds great, they fell short in making the Granny Squares easier and faster. There is also a discrepancy in the color lengths from one skein to another across the colors. I agree that it’s great that they have pulled the colors together for you and the feel of the yarn is nice. I actually ended up getting 15 squares out of each skein and I cut the the different colors for each round, for I don’t mind weaving the ends in.

Crochet is supposed to be relaxing instead of so much angst. Some of the colors have a dot of a color on it from one of the others. Thus the reason why I use the granny square yarn for scarves and hats . The best stitch is C2C, C2C moss and granny spike stitch. The color patterns are so pretty. I became obsessed with them and have all 18 colors. I hope they add more! 😄

I can see this maybe being useful if you're making a specific project, but for my part I don't like the idea of being completely locked in to someone else's idea of what the thing should look like. I also think the need to finish each round exactly where you're supposed to would be incredibly frustrating. For my part, I simply don't see much advantage to this over other methods for dealing with the ends (my favorite being burying them in subsequent stitches, so you only need to weave in the last one). That said, thank you for the review! I've been curious about this yarn since I heard of it, and now know it's not for me. That's exactly what I came here to find out, and I appreciate the time you took to provide this review for the community!

There's definitely a learning curve with this yarn! My first few I had to keep frogging rounds until I figured out what worked for me. I ended up only doing two chains instead of three at the corners (only on the final round) and if I had extra length at the end of any round, I just make slip stitches until I use it up and then start the next round. Since my hook size and tension are consistent, my finished squares are all the same size. My biggest complaint is that the dyeing isn't consistent; as in the amount of each color isn't necessarily the same even within the same skein, much less across dye lots. That's what made me ultimately decide to use my slipstitch technique. It works for me and once I block them all, I'm looking forward to having a fun blanket with minimal ends to deal with!

As much as I hate weaving in ends, no matter what pattern is used, whether traditional granny square or other, if a color change happens at a particular point then with this yarn it all comes down to meeting gauge and having the proper tension. Maybe practice makes this easier to do, but no human will get it right every time. And since Inefficiency makes me insane no matter where it applies, having to potentially work and rework section after section is a deal breaker for me, lol. Great video! I wouldn’t necessarily use this for Granny squares as I don’t mind weaving in the ends but where I think the value lies is in not having to buy, or store so many different colors of yarn, especially when you want to have an on-the-go project. I love to crochet in doctor’s waiting rooms, etc, and hauling 5+ balls of yarn with me is inconvenient to say the least. So I plan to get some and make one of the projects that doesn’t require color changes at an exact spot. I think it would be brilliant for that purpose. Thank you for showing this in such a detailed way, both the frustration process of making the square but then elation when it works out, but I also so much appreciated being able to see skein by skein what the colour blends look like. I'm from Australia so can't get direct access to the yarn as far as going to a physical store to pick it up and look at it in person, so by far you showed the most extensive visual display of how the different colourways are, so I really enjoyed getting to see them that way! We do have an alternative way of getting yarn that looks like the same colourways for many of the versions here but just not with the same labellng, but not all of the colour options are available and you just have to be able to find it by chance when searching through a large crate container, so not always guaranteed to get it but I always keep my eye out! 😉🤞🏻

Life is too short! And that yarn is too expensive to not work right. I like using color changing yarns for my grannies, like in my avatar. I don't have to have every round be a different color! My favorite granny afghan I ever made was with Bernat Mosiac. I loved the colors in that yarn. Shouldn't you have 4 inches of the white left over to weave in?

It took me a couple squares to know how to use this yarn with my tension, but for me I found that I had to tighten up the last two rounds every time. I used a 6mm hook for the first three and swapped to a 5.5 for the last two while trying to actively tighten my tension. The color changes are still not always perfect but I find that sometimes it adds a bit of character to the squares, if that makes sense. If you look closely on the squares of the yarn label you can see that theirs aren’t perfect either. To me if the color change isn’t drastic (from a dark color to a light color for example) I don’t think it looks bad if a stitch is off and I leave it. I dislike weaving ends so much that I don’t even bother making normal squares frequently but for me I find that the yarn is worth it if you can get used to it.

The great thing about this yarn is that I watched crochet videos that led me to your videos. I have used this a lot and still have to fiddle with it. If I have two much yarn my cheat is to slip stitch across the top. Tacky but less frustrating. I have a lot of this and have made a cardigan. You have to decide whether to have a chain 1 between clusters little things like that. It is currently hard to find all colors online but oddly enough my Wal-Mart in Cherryville NC actually has the white bordered all in one granny square yarn. And they carry very little yarn!

Picked up some of this yarn a few days ago because the ladies in my crochet group were raving about it. I was very skeptical, but I had a blast with it. Took a few tries but once I made a square work the rest were easy. Managed to get it to work with my preferred pattern too (standing dc start, no chain between clusters, ch 1 in corner). I'm incredibly anxious, I thought the eternal yarn chicken would kill me, but shockingly it was very manageable. Additional thoughts: -I used a 6mm hook and my usual tension which is on the tighter side of medium, I never had to frog more than 6 clusters to get a row to work. -I thought that varying tension would look bad but it blocks out. -(For me) the satisfaction of nailing a row outweighs the anxiety of yarn chicken. -While it may be a little more time consuming to re-do a few clusters than weave in ends, I enjoy crocheting more so I'm fine with it. -This yarn is fiddly and frustrating, it's not for everyone. However, I wrote myself off as someone who would hate it and had a lot of fun anyway. It's puzzles! Puzzles fun!

I felt your frustration so hard. I have had a skien of this for months and was weary of trying it. I finally busted it out this past Tuesday and I had to frog so many times. I did finish one square, but it’s still not quite right, so I haven’t finished off yet. I’m going to go up another hook size and try again. I honestly think weaving in the color change ends like normal will just be less time consuming and frustrating.
