As a broke crocheter I end up diying a lot of things and I found a super cheap and easy way to keep my yarn balls separated and away from pets is by using an empty coffee container. Wash them out really well and cut a hole in the lid, put in a grommet so your yarn doesn’t drag and that’s it. The only problem I’ve had with this is with really chunky yarns

I just put all my yarn in a drawer and close it. Granted I can't separate it. My problem with this is I can crochet for 12 to 14 hours straight and only stopping to get something to eat or drink or using the restroom but the idea of using a coffee container is awesome.

I bought one and it came with short sticks, and not very many of them. I can order more, or I can use wooden BBQ skewers! I also use it more for stacking my mail or handy stuff on the arm of my sofa, like keeping the DP diamond holders box - that I use to keep my daily pills in - upright (like stacked mail) right where I'll see them and remember to take them! 😆 I also keep hair bands handy on the skewers, as well as a small bag of crochet/stitch markers. It's such a useful item, even if I don't use it for it's original intended use! Lol

​@@hag8752 they may be harder to find, but there's also 100% plastic scissors that can still cut yarn, but not skin. I had some in a Barbie craft kit as a kid that came with them. Could be a good option if the metal blade at all is hard for anyone. I've been using the lighted crochet hooks for over two years and find them absolutely amazing! They tend to have a thicker handle than even the ergonomic hooks and as a sufferer of tendonitis, I very much appreciate that. I cannot use a compression glove as it is too uncomfortable, but by combining kinetic tape hand strapping and this handle I crochet pain free. When I crochet in the evening I keep it on the medium setting so not too bright but much more comfortable than my neck light. We are none of us the same and what one person likes/dislikes may prove to be quite the opposite to what another person likes/dislikes. I don't intend this as a personal criticism to any aspects of this channel, I'm simply sharing my thoughts. Happy crafting everyone. Xx

That double revolving yarn thingy: I have always used a standing toilet paper holder. I slip my skein or ball of yarn on the bar just as if it were a roll of TP and I’m ready to knit or crochet. No tangles, no falling on the floor, no wasted table space, quick and easy.

I have that same set of lighted crochet hooks, and I love them. The hook itself lights up, making it easier to see stitches when using darker colored yarn, or crocheting in dim light (I also have a neck light that I use). The lighted hooks allow me to crochet at night without disturbing my husband.

I came here to say this. I got these and am crocheting a granny stripe blanket with it. It’s holding up very well, the light does help me see, and while plastic is not my favorite, these feel really nice! I didn’t know they came in metal. I’ll have to get some!!

I believe one of the pros for the thread cutters is if you are traveling via airplane you may might want to use this during high stress periods of travel. They sometimes won’t allow scissors on planes.

For the few that do not mind a diy for cushion grips. I use super soft air dry dough. It takes a bit to dry out. I mold it around the grip area and let it dry for a bit before I mold it by holding it. Let it dry overnight, and you've got a custom molded grip. It works great for hooks that have some sort of handle too.

I have made my own grip for my crochet hooks - with polymer clay! It will not work with plastic hooks but metal ones work fine. This is because the polymer clay must be baked to cure. I love doing this because the crochet hooks with polymer clay grips are lovely!

I make large plushies with chenille yarn, and I will say that the light-up hook does wonders for me. I have the same one, and I use it when I'm in the car or at night when I don't have good lighting. The smaller sizes bend fairly easily since they can't be made of more sturdy material, but the larger ones work perfectly.

I received a set of light up crochet hooks as a gift (not the brand you reviewed, but just as cheap) and never use them. I love the person who gave them to me, their heart was in the right place, but like you said, the hooks don't help you see the stitches better. What works best for me is my Ottlite. the wooden blocking board has a stand so that the air can come through the holes from the back, even through the lining. Also, the air goes along the top better than if it was laying down. Also, a lot of people don't have huge craft rooms and areas, so standing up takes up less space. the yarn cutter won't get next to the yarn on your work, either but I found it helpful to cut beading thread to use, but not to cut the thread next to the work after the piece is completed. You can cut off the extra velcro, once you have fitted it to your finger.

I love my Big Sulley. I prefer it to yarn bowls because it works better. I often use mini skeins & this is great to keep them separate & not falling on the floor! I don’t have a way to keep them in different places like you mention. In my opinion it deserves 4 stars.

I use two large clean pickle jars to separate my yarn. When they get twisted, I simple hold my work up by the strands and let it spin out. The natural tension in the twist will spin and unwind itself. I save so much money not buying fancy gadgets so I have more money for good quality yarn.

I’ve used all kinds of crocks etc. latest was a huge Elvis popcorn tin that’s many years old. You are the first person that’s mentioned letting the project or yarn spin, I use that method a lot. 8:34

My mother had something called a honeycomb to keep the yarn tangle free and pet proof. She had about 4 of them, which really helped when she was doing a fairisle jumper. The biggest ball of yarn they could take was a 500g. I've not seen anything like them today, so I had to improvise. I picked up a large food container from Poundland ($1 store in America) and made a small hole in the top to feed the the yarn through and I now use that for that when knitting or crocheting, it's very useful.

In regards to the thread cutters, you should cut the velcro down to the right size for you! If there's any velcro rubbing against your fingers still, you can add a piece of felt

I got a lighted crotchet hook last year & Love It! Its never broken has 2 lighted settings. It helps with dark wool & dim lighting. It came in a case with a lot of different size hooks, pins, needles. Threads ,a ruler a charging cable. Best purchase ever!

I love❤ my blocking boards for my squares. My husband has made me 4 of them (so far) - different sizes! He used peg board, drilled out the holes to fit wooden dowels, made a frame around the edges and attached a back to it. I put my squares in water, gently squeeze out the water, wrap them in a towel for a few minutes, then put them on my boards. I stand the boards up (they’re about 24” high) and lean them up against a wall so that the wet yarn doesn’t touch the pegboard. They’re not expensive to make and I have them all different widths to accommodate different sizes of squares. Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🎉

I use the Copper Fit gloves when my hands start to to bother me and they are fabulous! They are more like fingerless gloves in that they actually have quarter fingers, not just holes for your fingers to go through. I also think they were right around $20 for one pair.

My wife uses a soda bottle for her yarn. She cut a slit in the side of a soda bottle,put clear tape on either side of the slits, drilled a hole in the soda cap, put the yarn in feed the beginning of the yarn through the cap screwed the cap to the bottle and started knitting, it keeps the yarn from tangling if she uses more than one color she uses another bottle. It also keeps it clean,no hair gets in it.

My Mom taught me that trick back in the 80's, and you don't have to tape the bottles together. A 2 liter bottle holds a big skein with no problem.

I enjoyed listening to your pros and cons for each item. I have the set of light up crochet hooks you talked about and was very surprised you gave them 0/5 stars. I used this exact set for a trip to Turkey back in August and they were amazing with no complaints from TSA/ security, the battery lasted the entire 20+ hours of flying (to and from) and I did not have the drastic bending problem you showed. Thanks for this thorough review. I had to laugh about that one item that really made you angry. You really made your point!😂 I also wanted to comment that I feel the same way about the tassel makers as you do about the yarn holders. You really don’t need them. All you need is a piece of stiff cardboard cut to the size you want. My mother taught me how to make tassels that way when I was a kid so I always saw these as unnecessary gimmicks. Plus you don’t have to have it hanging around till you need it again! I will definitely put that blocking board on my wish list! Thanks again!!

I have the big sully, and I love it. It's not going to work for every situation as you stated, but for the work I do, it's extremely useful. It keeps my yarn from my cats, as you stated, and it's portable, I just throw it in my bag and go. I also have several of the regular yarn it skein holders. I use them all the time.

I use compression gloves from walmart, and they were only about $10. I love them. I tend to need support around my fingers and the ones from walmart go up the finger. They help so much. I may have to try the lion brand ones too for times I need more wrist support. (:

The fingers are long on them but it's nothing to cut them down shorter so they don't hinder your crocheting or knitting, (or fold them). I have the lighted crochet hook and I love it! I use the small hooks on it all the time and they've never broken. It works just fine on my darker yarns. I've never noticed a problem with seeing what im doing. I typically use it to crochet in the dark if im watching a movie with my sister or something where I dont want to be too disruptive with a lamp. It also is great when i want to crochet in the dark in the car, the light is not bright enough to be distracting to the driver and still bright enough for me to see what I'm doing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

To keep yarn clean and feeding smoothly, the best cheap idea I’ve used,(especially in doctor waiting areas), is ordinary grocery plastic bags. Place skein in bag, criss cross handles and feed yarn through opening. If handy, you can always place bag handle on chair arm, it works great on longer car trips as well.

I have a DMC brand thread cutter (I also cross stitch) and I like it because I just looped a piece of thin ribbon through it and can wear it as a pendant. Similar concept to the thread cutter, but the entire thing is metal and it has quite a few spots to cut, so when one spot of the blade dulls you have at least 5 other spots to use.

For my hook handles, I used some polymer clay, smooshed it up with different colours, and put it over the hooks and baked in the oven. There are a lot of inexpemsive polymer clay options that work really well. I just got some really thin hooks in and can't wait to do it again.

I tend to use a lot of dark colors and in order to see my work better I use a 500 lumin head lamp that I found in the camping section of Walmart. Sometimes it can get heavy though. Seems I need to look into the neck lights to alleviate the weight.

I've used the light up hooks, to which they were purchased by a different company, and so far for me they've been doing well, also the Susan Bates hook grips I love them.the comfort of the grips work well for my hands. The gloves you mentioned, I've worn a different kind of gloves which covers the finger better in a grey color.

I saw your video where you were testing Red Heart dish scrubby yarn...the one with all the small yarn side lines...not the Red Heart sparkle dish scrubby yarn. I am so glad to hear that you found working with that particular yarn was nearly impossible to find your stitches. I had that same problem and actually tossed out all I had of that type of scrubby yarn after being totally frustrated with it. The attempt I made looked like a hit mess with no definition of stitches or rows. I just gave up. This is hilarious, you totally talked me into the big sully with all the positives🤣 that's exactly what I need is to keep my animals from my yarn, have it not go anywhere, and I cake all my yarn. I got a similar set of lite up Crochet hooks. Mine aren't bendy though they are very sturdy, they work great however, when using them they squeak. It's so annoying I can't even work with them. Like fingernails on the chalkboard😝. It's funny how our opinions as crafters differ so entirely. I would never spend money on a wood blocking board. Seems crazy since you soak your pieces or spritz them with water, I'm sure it's sealed nicely, but it scares me,🤷‍♀️ wood swells. I'll stick to my foam boards. But the perfect spots to place the rods in is smart. It seems, from what another user said, that the squares are not supposed to touch the wooden base, and that's the reason for the stand: to keep them almost vertical, so that the water can drip. But it could be a useful idea to cover the base with an oilcloth or plastic sheet, then punch holes in it and keep it in place by putting four small pegs on the four corners.

I bet you could us a steamer to block your square on the board and not have to worry about the wood as much. Brand new it is probably sealed really well which should make it less of an issue but down the road I could see that issue possibly cropping up.

You can use waxed paper or a little oil for your sweet needles. I wanted to buy my mom some litter crochet hooks . I have seen some with god reviews. When you buy from Amazon you need to be careful for knock-offs it sounds like the set in the video since I have seen them in a craft store and they are good quality.

Yep. Regarding the Big Sully - I have one and use it sporadically. Even when the yarn is caked, if the strand slips down onto the center spindle, it doesn’t work all that well. But I have it an like the fact that the yarn stays clean, rather than falling on the floor! Great video, as usual! Merry Christmas to you and your family, Elise! I love my lighted crochet set. I don't use them as a main light source but they light up the stitch you're working well so for darks and super brights theyve helped a lot and I like having the size range. They seem flimsy but I've never broken one I don't have a natural tight tension though.

I love my Thread Cutterz. I trimmed off the extra velcro and have no issues. While I do have many pairs of scissors, I like to do handwork 'on the go' and feel uncomfortable pulling them out in public (plus they aren't even allowed some places). The cutting ring is perfect to use in the car, on planes and other public transport, waiting rooms, waiting for sporting events and other kid activities. I sound like a commercial..lol! I just really love that gadget..but I do use my little scissors at home

On the Big Sully, you CAN use a yarn ball. You just empty out the insides and place it inside and it’s just like a yarn bowl. One of my favorite features about the Big Sully is the notions holder that is in the base. Personally, I have two of these and really like them.

I think that the Olicraft Granny Square Blocking Board must come with the stand so you don’t have to hunch over to use it. I have back and neck problems and would find being able to use the board in a standing position much better. I’d be able to use it much more often and for a longer period of time. It’s a nice ergonomic option.

I have a set of lighted crochet hooks, which were gifted to me. I have used them a lot, with and without the light. I found the set handy to pack when I want to crochet on the road, but don't have a set project. Also, I crocheted a very large side to side vest using them. I find the handle comfortable, and I have not had one of the tips break so far. I agree, it does feel "cheap" but it has stood the test of time under fairly heavy use. It did bother my husband at night when he was driving, as it flashed in his peripheral vision as I crocheted in the dark. Fixed that by changing my position slightly, and shielding it with my work.

I agree that compression gloves do help immensely. However the ones you show do nothing for me because it is my thumbs and fingers that need the support. I have the exact same lighted crochet hook kit and I LOVE IT! I paid $15 for them. I used them to crochet in the dark traveling across country. I used them everyday day with DK and Worsted yarn. Cotton, Wool, and Acrylic yarns for almost 4 months everyday! The hooks are still in great shape! The kit was so handy and if I dropped a hook while traveling it was easy to retrieve, no hook lost in the crannies of the seat or floor board. While I do have the neck light you showed, I can never get it to sit properly to shine where I need it and after a while it starts to bother my neck, so I only use it for repairs on my sewing machines. I guess what works for one doesn't work for everyone.

I got a crochet bag backpack from anaconda and it has so many pockets and power pockets as well, it's not really bulky and isn't too big but big enough to fit alot of stuff. Nice for traveling or just putting everything you need on a constant basis at your fingertips. It was less than $40 i believe. I chose pink and the material is very nice

Great advice... However, the light up crochet hooks - I've had for years and I love mine, especially when working with #123, weight yarn. My hand doesn't cramp when I get lost in my projects. I am a thread crocheter, I love making doilies and different table toppers. My husband made me a wooden stand to hold my thread when I am crocheting. The center where they the thread goes is a toilet paper holder. It has a wooden base, then two upright pieces that have holes drilled deep enough to hold the toilet paper holder. I have used this for years. The only way anyone could get this from is over my dead body. LOLOL I do like making afghans from granny squares and I like the wooden thing that forms the squares. I need to check on the neck light.

I use the cushion grips on my metal hooks. They are a great alternative for those who don't have the funds to be able to purchase ergonomic hooks. I use them for when I am doing Amigurumi or blankets. If I just used the metal hooks for that long, I end up with bruising and/or cramping, so I bought the cushions as a quick fix and they did well.

Okay I was SO excited to use the lighted hooks I got for Christmas last year but as a left handed crocheter, when I used the hook the motion made the tips pop out! I have one too and the tops keep popping out. I don’t use it anymore. But it is interesting that I am also left handed so am wondering if somehow we ‘unscrew’ it while working.

Hi! First time viewer. I enjoyed your video very much and I'm looking forward to more. I have the light up crochet set and I LOVE it! I have had it for a few years and it was invaluable before my cataract surgery. They have never broken and I think the price for a whole set of hooks is good. The only problem I have with it is that the smaller ones sometimes pop out of the handle while I'm crocheting. For blocking, I would not want something made of wood. I use foam-blocking pieces with T-pins. That way you can block any size you want. But my favorite gadget that you showed.was the ring cutter. I am constantly losing my scissors. I have chronic health problems and stay in bed most of the time. I have 4 -5 pairs of scissors on my nightstand because I"m always losing them in the bed. Thanks! Now I'm going to watch your Dollar Tree yarn video.

I use a paper towel holder, coffee can & put a small hole in the lid, my favorite thing I use is a large guinea pig ball!. I took the lid off & drilled a hole in it. Put yarn in ball, string it up through the whole I put in the lid & then put the lid back on.. I absolutely love it.. To cover my hooks "I use Susan Bates! They're my fav bc I like the more pointed tip vs rounded" I bought the hair curlers that are long & rubber. I take the metal wire out of them & cut the rubber curler to my desired size & slip it over my hook. I also use polly clay.. put it on my hook, put in oven & after it cools down just a little, I set it in cold water.. Then it's ready to use

I actually love the Susan Bates hook cushion things, I hold my crochet hook like a pencil & I cut each grip thing into 3 pieces & push one of them up over the thumb grip area on the hook ( what's better than 2 grips at a decent price? Being able to make them into 6 for a great price)

The light up crochet hook isn’t supposed to be used on dark yarn :/ it’s supposed to be used IN the dark it’s definitely not worth zero stars I had had it for over a year and It hasn’t broken yet it’s five stars for me :|

I followed the saga of The Big Sully on Ravelry. A lot of people backed the original designer in I believe a Kickstarter type program. They never received what was promised. The blocking board looks interesting. I might have those gloves, not sure. Thanks for the reviews.

My daughter bought me the interchangable hooks and i have a ton of hooks but i only use the interchangeable ones. Absolutely feels better on my hands.

Completely agree with you about the lighted crochet hook. I have tried using it many times and it is a complete fail. I bought the light you have and ❤❤❤ it! I’m glad you talked about the 4-skein holder because that looks like something that I would buy. Thank you for saving my money!

The lighted crochet hooks sound good in theory but when they are also poorly made they aren't worth the money. I thought I was going to like the double revolving yarn holder and it's just not helpful for me. Glad the video saved you some money!! 🧶🧶🧶

Thank you. I don’t understand why there are so many gadgets to stop your wool ball from rolling away. Just take the end from the middle and you don’t have a wobbly ball problem lol. Wool/yarn balls are designed to use from the middle as this stops your yarn twisting.

When I started crocheting I used to pull from the center too but I always got yarn barf :/ but I solved the problem by pulling from the other end while the cake is in an almost closed bag😂

I bought that set of lighted crochet hooks, I used them for a while, but since then I have got a neck light and I so agree, it's SOOO much better! 😁

Thanks for the review. The stand for the blocking is useful for when I spray stiffener. I make doilies and they are blocked with starch spray.
