I’m using dollar tree yarn to make a king size blanket for my bed. The total is somewhere around $65! Soooooo much cheaper than getting other brands of yarn, and I absolutely love how the worsted acrylic yarn feels.

That's so great! How many skeins is it taking you to make your blanket? We have a king sized bed and it would be so great to be able to make a blanket for our bed and not spend a ton on yarn.
@cheyennebigelow3142

@@jennifertrusty6997 I’m doing a series of squares with borders which wasn’t my original plan so I need to adjust my price and it will probably be somewhere around $80 now that I added borders around the squares. For my original measurements I was making squares that were approximately 7x7. I then decided I wanted to add a border around my squares and they are now approximately 7 1/4 by 7 1/4. With one skein I was able to make 3-4 squares without the border so I needed 144 squares for my king bed so I needed 24 skeins of each color (I’m doing two colors) now that I’ve added a border to my squares I’ll need additional skeins. Im working on making the squares now without borders and then will buy the yarn I need for the borders after I get all the squares done. Im guessing I’ll need an additional 12 skeins, (6 of each color) plus a color for the border of the big project. So now I’m thinking this might be closer to $100 project :(

I have used the dollar tree yarn to make shawls and lapghans for the nursing home near me. I usually donate them around the first of December. Using this yarn allows me to make more shawls to donate and I really like to feel of it. I make these all year long and can usually donate 30 or 35 shawls each year.

I started teaching 5 of my granddaughters to crochet in October. Since we were starting small Fall projects, I found Dollar Tree yarns perfect! It didn't cost a ridiculous amounts of money, to buy each of the 5 girls their own skein of yarn. I just love how well the yarn is working for us. Thanks for doing this video, I don't feel bad about being thrifty now.😂

I love this yarn, but my local Dollar Tree is small and the selection isn't very good. I wish I could order smaller amounts than 12 skeins of the same color as a minimum order from your website. I wouldn't even mind if the minimum order was 12 skeins total (of all colors), but 12 of one color is too much.

I think your Fox doll is so adorable. And I think the fact that there's a difference in thickness between the Tweed yarn and the regular yarn doesn't really make a difference with his features. In fact I think it gives him a little bit more personality. 😘

I agree ! The dollar tree yarn is awesome! One thing everyone should know though, is that not every dollar tree has all the yarns in all the colors, and they don’t get consistent shipments. It will depend on when you go what they will have in stock. So make sure you have enough before starting your project. I make a habit of stopping at every dollar tree I pass by to check their yarn stock. I pick up what I need until I have enough, and THEN start my project.

I’ve used the cotton for making soap sacks, which we fill with a bar of soap, and which is a charity project our crochet group makes each year for the homeless and for our local food pantry. I’ve found the cotton yarn to be much softer than the usual more expensive cotton I purchased in the past. It makes it much easier to crochet with too.

Hey Elise, great video! I have used the Dollar Tree yarn for a long time now and there's two things you need to know: 1) Colors for everything but the Tweed so far, change about 6x/year. You never know when the colors will change out. Also the JUST ACTIVE is really nice to work with too. 2) The cotton splits like nobody's business. It's great for school projects and crafting but crocheting...there's other options out there. I LOVE the chenille one! I made Peep Bunnies with it and they are so cute and fun. I like your wolf. He's adorable!

Yes!! I tried the just cotton as a brand new crocheter, and it fuzzed apart worse than a cotton ball! I think I broke my yarn four times before I just gave up. So frustrating, especially when I don't know what I'm doing to begin with! I'd like to try the chenille, but the cotton will never see my basket again 😂

I mostly eyeball them. The last one I made I used my 48 needle knitting machine and jotted down the stitch/row counts which are as follows: Gray/Charcoal Cardigan 12 Balls of Dollar Tree Acrylic Yarn Back Panels x2 Cast on 43 stitches on knitting machine 120 Rows Put on 5.5 mm needles 12 Rows 2:2 ribbing Front Panels x2 Cast on 34 stitches on knitting machine 120 Rows Put on 5.5 mm needles 12 Rows 2:2 ribbing Sleeves x2 Cast on circular on knitting machine 88 Rows Put on 4.0 mm needles 12 Rows 1:1 ribbing Collar Pick up 110 stitches with 5.5 mm needles on each side 12 Rows 2:2 ribbing Pockets x2 Cast on 24 stitches on knitting 24 Rows Put on 5.5 mm needles 4 rows of 2:2 ribbing I usually use 2 colors for these, doing one panel of each set a different color and/or switching colors for the trim. I've also made them all one color. When I've done them by hand, the stitch counts are approximately the same, except I do the back as one panel instead of two pieces with a seam up the middle. I've only made these for myself and some of the ladies in my family and we're all under 5 feet tall and 100 pounds-ish--so this is oversized and slouchy for us--so gauge swatch and size accordingly. @@tiffymag

I have scoured the Internet for this type of content because I live in a rural area where I don't have access to a lot of stores and I'm also a small business owner and know the importance of shopping locally. Buying yarn and understanding what's interchangable is more challenging than learning stitches IMO.

Great colour, lovely and warm, just a shame they no longer stock that particular colour anymore as I'd have happily picked up some more for a different project

I have used the Just Yarn in both the Worsted and the Active styles. I have only knitted with them, and they worked up virtually identically in the beanies I made. I like the feel of the Worsted yarn better, and would feel confident that the chemo caps would be soft enough for the sensitive skin of chemo patients. Not quite as sure about the Active yarn being soft enough. Thanks for pointing out how to do the wraps per inch check. I have tried to explain it to people before, but your explanation is great.

Thank you for your great review of the Dollar Tree Premier yarns. I stumbled upon these just after my first grandchild was born. I wanted to make some booties but didn't need full skeins of yarn. I was concerned that the low price point for this yarn meant that the yarn would not hold up, but I didn't want to buy regular sized skeins and have a bunch of yarn left over. I am pleased that you, a much more experienced maker, liked this yarn. These skeins are just the right size for my grandbaby projects. I also liked your tip about "wraps per inch." Thank you!

I use a lot of Dollar Tree yarns for granny square afghans. I trust the "Just Yarn"/Just Active/Just Chenille/etc. yarns made by Premier more than I do the Crafter's Square yarns (which seem to be thinner and don't seem to indicate which company made them or where they were made); however, they all make great granny squares, and are good for colorwork & small projects. I've noticed that the Just Chenille is thinner than the Bernat Baby Blanket I often use for baby blankets, so I wouldn't go any larger than an 8mm hook with Just Chenille in an afghan (vs. the 10mm hook I use with Bernat Baby Blanket on afghans).

A HUGE consideration for me is cleaning the item. I’m a realist; all of the stuff I make is going in the washer/dryer. That’s me and everyone I make stuff for. The closest any of it will get to being hand washed is the gentle cycle. So… How well does it hold up to the washer/dryer? Does it shrink or relax? Does it seem to shed or felt up? Does it get soft, stiff, smooth, scratchy? Some yarns change drastically after a couple laps in the washer. Lionbrand Homespun actually gets softer, although it does seem to develop a halo, and fringes get rather worn very quickly. Would you mind adding post washing quality to your reviews? Thank you for your time.

Just happened to come across this very educational video as I am a newbie crochet practitioner. Here in the Philippines, we have really cheap yarns for half a dollar, and I've never worked the slowest in my life. The fibers (I don't know the right term, sorry) get ruffled so easily that doing a double crochet takes me a whole 10 seconds just to avoid all the tangles. But thanks for this video, I learned a lot in terms of picking yarns for my projects.

I've used both of the yarns you highlighted, and I agree about the quality of the yarn. Another KZbinr mentioned the differences she had found in the size of the skeins of these yarns as well. It is a good idea to make sure that you are choosing the bigger skeins for the money! it would have been interesting if you would have compared the price per ounce of another economy yarn like super saver or big twist for a price comparison. However, the Dollar Tree economy yarn is SOFTER than either of those brands! It is almost like comparing apples and oranges. Ordering online for free instore pickup would be a good way to get enough yarn for a large project without filling two carts etc.! Thanks for the review!

I think they are perfect for "scrap" projects and for newbie knitters/crochet people. In the end, I still buy them because the colors are great and the tweed are adorable. I think the Pound yarn at craft stores when they are on sale ($6/$7) is a better investment overall, but still a great find and a great variety of colors! I'm currently working on a scrap blanket (mostly of scrap yarn I actually have), but to have variety of colors, I bought a couple of these for add to it. I'd recommend it to give it a try.

OMG I loved that you made this video! Over the fall into the winter I crocheted my first sweater with the Premier Just Worsted in the color "Rose" for my best friend. The only thing was that I bought maybe around 5 or 6 skeins at one location then bought the remaining skeins when I came home for winter break. My mom & I noticed the dye lot was different between the skeins, but luckily my friend really liked it that way. It did sort of felt slightly as I was working the body of the sweater, then as I worked the sleeves, the body felted more. Be aware of this if you want to knit/crochet a large project such as a sweater, shawl, or a blanket! I still think this is a great budget-friendly yarn for those just starting out on knitting/crocheting, or if you just need a little bit of yarn in some of the colors they offer, while also not breaking the bank (this is important to me as a college student).

New subscriber here, so glad to meet you. I am a widow age 73 and have been knitting since I was in Girl Scouts and my wonderful mother was our leader. We each made a square potholder for our mothers for Christmas. It was so much work for my small fingers holding those big needles. . But it got me totally hooked and I loved it. The scouts had such a hard time that my mother after much instruction and starting them over eventually finished each girls potholder but not mine... I was able after restarting many times to finish the potholder. In the early 1970's as I became a housewife and then mother I had a baby hat and bootie business. I had 15 places that paid me outright and then marked them up to sell.I mostly sold them in hospital gift shops and I did very well. I sold the booties for $1.00 a pair and .90 cents a pair if they purchased a dozen at a time. Such wonderful times and it built my confidence as a new wife and mother. I was able to knit all of our Christmas presents for our extended families. Thank you for explaining The Dollar Tree yarn. I love it and the store in general is great for my small town where I have lived for 53 years as we don't have a yarn shop anymore or any craft stores at all. I am so looking forward to all your videos and it was so nice meeting you. I adore your fox!! I make a kitty about the same size and little boys and girls, blankets, slippers, shawls and scarfs and cute doggie items. I would see this yarn when shopping at DT but being somewhat of a yarn snob I would never buy it. A few months ago I decided to buy “one skein only” of Just Yarn. I crochet and donate chemo caps to my local Cancer Center. I discovered this yarn was a dream to work with and provided the softness that is so important to this type of cap. I went back to DT the next day and bought 2 of every color. I love the Tweed as well, it makes a nice looking man’s cap. So glad I gave it a try.

I have some of the Dollar Tree worsted and knit a pair of leg warmers for my daughter out of some of it. I found it to be every bit as good a quality as the other Premier acrylic yarns. On your fox, the fix on the difference between the white yarn and the tweed would have been to drop down a hook size for the white. Even in the same yarns, there is sometimes minute differences between the thickness of different colors. We adjust.

That's really cool, actually. Asides from lack of color selection, it seems similar to the Drops brand in Europe, specifically the Paris line. The price and size are both really comparable, though Paris is 100% cotton. The main difference does seem to color selection, because Paris has about 50 or so solid colors to choose from. Glad to get something of similar quality and price in America though.

I used the chenille yarn to knit over the Dollar Tree snowman wreath frame, and that came out super gorgeous. On needles now is the Berroco Desertstar which is a high-low vest kind of a thing (size 2x), so it's going to cost me under $12 for a gorgeous finished garment! I'm using the Rust Tweed for this pattern. Can't say enough how much I love the color and texture and what beautiful fabric it makes! Hoping to knit a beret with the leftover rust yarn. I love the dollar tree yarn I use it often and have made many projects with it. The only issue I’ve had was getting the colors I needed when I went to stock up at the store!

I can definitely see that being an issue. 🧶🧶🧶

I learned so much about different yarns in this video as a beginner. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge and comparisons of the yarns. I did happen to buy dollar tree yarn last year when I saw them and have enjoyed the worsted yarn. I think I used it with other types of yarn without even giving all of what you mentioned a thought. Now that I know, it helps me pay more attention to the type of yarn I’m using. It wasn’t bad when I used it with other brands, I think the only big thing I noticed was how thick and thin they were.

It's not something I paid a lot of attention to either in the beginning! The WPI truck is a good way to compare! 🧶🧶🧶

I love this review! Not only does it showcase the yarn with one of your existing projects, which is the only real way to know it's value, it also has a useful tip.
