Preston Pubs: Loved and lost

Our chief reporter Brian Ellis takes a tour of the city of Preston and laments a golden era of pubs which are sadly no more.

Loved this. I was hoping you would show where the Rosebud Hotel was once situated at the bottom of New Hall Lane. My father ran the Rosebud from 1972 to around 1982. There where loads of pubs going all the way up New Hall Lane. Locals did a pub crawl of all these pubs at the weekends. The only one still standing is at the top of New Hall Lane, The Hesketh Arms. Would be lovely if you did a series on all the pubs in Preston that have disappeared. I would spread the word for I know many who would love to watch and listen.

I remember the idiots in New Labour saying that Britain should get rid of pubs and adopt European café culture instead. I suppose they managed to get rid of the pubs but café culture was never going to take off in rainy Britain.

The Theatre was our go to pub at lunchtime when I worked in Winckley Square, and I certainly remember the Jolly Farmer at night. It used to get very busy.

What about the best music venue in the northwest, the lamb hotel. I spent many an evening listening to bands play there in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Really informative, I learnt a lot about Preston which I didn't know, stories my Gran and mum would tell me, I loved the comment about Old Englund at 11:20 🤣, The Greyhound and the survivor Walter Pierpoint, I wonder if he was related to Albert Pierpoint?

Very Interesting. I remember a few of the pubs you mentioned. I used to work in Theatre St (1979-1984), and we would often go for a pint either at the Painted Wagon below the ABC cinema, or at the Theatre for a good pint of Boddingtons.

I've only been in Preston for 5 years and enjoy spotting places that used to be pubs, but I didn't know some of these even tho I've looked at them many times. I assumed that there was a lot of "lost" pubs, but it seems like there was at least one on every Street.

Largest density of pubs in the country at one time, not sure which was the busiest for pubs but Meadow St would take some beating. My dad's mate lived on St Paul's sq and there was a pub every 50 yds it seemed.

10:08- In the early 1980's, i dated a girl who liked to drink 'Blue-Lagoons' (I hadn't heard of that concoction name, in 30yrs) I remember how buying a 'round' of drinks then, would quadruple the cost - just by asking for that drink, along with my usual pint Crazy !

The original Sumners wasn’t actually attached to that end terraced property (which was Vin Miller’s hairdressers). There was a cut through between the buildings that went round the back and came out on Deepdale road. And on that cut through was “Deepdale Handymans”, they sold hardware and timber etc. I also remember that when they were working on the road widening they discovered a tunnel leading from the cellar of The Royal Garrison to Fulwood Barracks.

I remember working in Do It All DIY store not far from the Old England and it was a known fact that shop lifters used to sell all the nicked gear in that pub😮

Interesting video I should have been able to remember a few of those lost pubs but they have slipped out of my memory as well as out of sight. There still seems to be a lot of pubs in Preston especially around the Church Street and Friargate areas and some new pubs have opened such as Winckley Ale House, Guild Ale House and The Orchard.
