Born in 74 and can confirm Alan Rough, who must have been the incumbent around 86 onwards, maybe later but I'm seeing them iconic white shorts with the thick blue band, was it Mexico 86? Anyway back to Alan Rough, he still got a load of gip from us English (esp greavsie, it had been going on so long that the Saint just put up with it, he had no choice) but as time went on rough proved that he was at least professional despite some never to be forgotten ricks of biblical proportions, then Jim Leighton and Andy Goram finally put the issue to bed with their consistency, hard to believe now but the rise in quality probably coincided with the emergence of the Scottish League as a real force in Europe, it went through a fantastic purple patch in the 90s, full of top level players... My gran was Scottish and I'm a Liverpool fan so I have fantastic memories of watching the likes of souness, Hanson, Nicol and the king, along with Strachan and the likes, they had half a great team in the 80s... Great memories

Very funny from the talented Mr Whitehouse. They wouldn't dream of doing the sketch these days (or at least some of the 'accents' / imitations would be scrubbed) which just shows where we have moved onto as a society. But it is still very funny and maybe should be taken as more of a comment on the attitudes and perceptions of the 'manager' than a commentary of the players themselves.

@@johnmartinez7440 I don't see it that way. I think it's a satire on the seemingly impossible situation faced by the modern manager with teams comprising of players from many different nationalities. And there's great comedy at how this manager is implausibly capable of navigating this. There's a few dodgy-but-funny stereotypes thrown in, but tellingly the one that Whitehouse makes sure to placate is the black one. I don't think there's a suggestion that they would all understand him in English. Or even if they could it's open to interpretation whether they think he's a misguided/bigoted dinosaur or if he's implausibly good at motivating them by tapping into the footballing culture they were each raised on!

perhaps instead of just watching they should work harder and play better? Natural talent gets you noticed, hard work gets you in the team. Too many English players get a big pay packet and think they've made it. The likes of Jack Grealish would rather bench warm and check their account than play regularly and improve themselves. Great sketch though, Paul Whitehouse was always the funny one; Harry and Paul was good but Fast Show was much more consistent.
