1971 the Penske Sunoco 512M was fastest... 3:17 But the lightweight polyester/resin body parts were not tough enough to last. So our NART 512M upheld Ferrari's honor. My friend Tony a2z brought her home 3rd... 236 mph on the Mulsanne.. Not beaten until the 1980s 956/962 speeds.. NART last took the 512M to Bonneville For the FIA 5.0 liter unblown gas record.. Still stands! FORZA FERRARI !!

@NeeKroVal : "Le Mans", a 1971 film with Steve McQueen, Probably the best film ever made about racing. Not much of a scenario, though, which is probably why the film is so good. Dialogue is scarce, but meaningfull. Example: "When you’re racing, it... it’s life. Anything that happens before or after... is just waiting."
@kellienicolebrooksschettin65985 жыл бұрын
I know this may sound silly but the Porsche never had any blow over going 200 plus did it I can't remember if...???
Quel dommage.

@macsm the 917-LH (the #25) could hit 240mph... SICK !!!!
@thethirdman225 Жыл бұрын
No, that’s a myth, I’m afraid. The speed trap recorded a maximum of 331 km/h (205 mph) in 1970. In 1971 that figure was upped to 362 km/h (224.4 mph). That comes directly from the ACO who own and operate the speed trap. I remember hearing the same figure as a callow youth in the 1970s and in fact, it was only after seeing the ACO figures that I started looking into it.

savaden the 917 lh langheck or long tail wasn't turbocharged and had no where near 1100bhp it had the same 4.9 litre flat 12 naturally aspirated engine as the gulf 917 . Only reason it was faster was because of aerodynamics giving it about a 12 mph advantage on straights , was a complete handful through corners though

Vic Elford appears a lot in old movie newsreels of the era, at one point he was leading and thrashing the field. That No. 25 is as much a cultural icon as the No .23 the eventual winners.

917/30.sunoco. That was the turbo. It murdered the Can Am.
@thethirdman225 Жыл бұрын
In 1970 the 917 was putting out about 580hp. By 1971 it was over 600. You are talking about the CanAm car which never raced at Le Mans and would not have been eligible anyway.

@@thethirdman225 According to Vic Elford's autobiography, the Austrians were running the prototype of the twin turboed car at over 1000 hp. Looking at the LeMans videos you can see the white car with red accents disappear past the rest of the pack. The car dnf'd but nevertheless was ridiculously fast.

Ah these monster Porsche 917s!. I could watch and listen to them and the Ferdari 512s all day. I'm sorry, but modern Le Mans cars do not sound like these. Granted though, the only crash protection these 917s had were the front wheels and some thin tubing above the flat 12 engine as an excuse for an anti-roll bar.
@thethirdman225 Жыл бұрын
An anti roll bar is part of the suspension. The rollover hoop is what you’re talking about.

At times I think wow, but then I wonder whether this mechanical merry go round with young guys risking their lives for eternal fame and glory isn't completely absurd Earthling-behaviour. I'm quite torn between these two extremes.
