I find the imperfections in their voices beautiful. Cosette sounds much like a song bird, and Marius sounds like a boy about to become a man. They are both young and unsure, as we all have been.

Amanda has an excessive vibrato, but you can tell she still has a good voice. She said herself she wished she'd had more time to perfect the technique she needed to sing the role.

+Beebs Less confidence, please, and be more gentle. Barks can be a trained singer, but her voice in my opinion isn't that beauty. Éponine's voice must be hoarse, ruined by alcol and by pain: Samantha Barks' voice is so high and cleaned. Even her recitation is so cleaned, and her look, to me she isn't Éponine. I have never thoken she couldn't sing, in future try to be nicer.

In the novel Eponine is a secondary character, and she’s also jealous, catty and spiteful and quite ugly because of her misery. Marius finds her annoying and creepy and they rarely talk to each other. Cosette is a very developed character in the book, full of hope and light, but also clever, well-read, charming and pleasant over than just beautiful and fair; she’s amazing. She wants to be free, she dreams an adventurous life, and we know all of her hobbies and passions; in the musical, in order to give more space to Eponine, she’s just a naive and dumb chick who has two or three songs with Marius.

Changes will always occur when adapting a novel into a film. Personally, I actually rather like the expansion of Eponine's character to a young woman who, as the daughter of the horrible Thenardiers, could have so easily have become a criminal herself, but is redeemed by her love for Marius. It is in keeping with the themes and spirit of the novel.

+Paul Rogers Yeah, the timbre of his voice may not be for everyone but you gotta admit, he acts the hell out of that role throughout the movie. "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" is a perfect example. Also, he and Seyfried have perfect chemistry here; I am a straight male under the general straight male delusion that a straight male cannot call anything adorable because it would make me less manly, and even I went "Okay, that's just adorable" when I saw this scene.

Amanda Seyfried is great at hitting high notes. But she uses too much vibrato. If she actually worked on strengthening her diaphragmatic muscles (which would give her a stronger voice and thereby, allow her to sing without relying on vibrato constantly), then she would make a perfect soprano.

+tara thelen It's more that she caused Fantine to sacrifice everything, gave Valjean a purpose and changed him for the better, and indirectly saved Marius. She's a driving force, but not a particularly active or interesting character (besides her struggles as a child). What I like about Les Mis is that every character serves a purpose to tie things together.

It doesn't matter who deserves Marius more, only that we respect the beautiful story. Eponine showed how she grew out of her abusing self into a compassionate, sacrificial girl who loved Marius, who didn't love her, to the point where she gave her life for his. She was a character fabricated by the author to be relatable- not unrealistic "love at first sight" like Marius and Cosette, but unrequited love that everyone understands. Les Mis wasn't written to begin a shipping war, it was to show lo

i like how Tom Hooper deals with this part a lot. the stage version and the film version are totally incomparable. on the stage, the music and the singing skills are more emphasised while in the film, the stories and plots are more important. this is just so beautiful with emotions and the melody.

this is definitely the best song in the whole musical in my opinion!

I think these three were perfectly cast! How they portray the characters' emotions so realistically and not try to sing the "pretty version" of the song (to quote Anne) - especially Eddie's "I'm doing everything all wrong!"

I think Amanda played the role of Cosette very well, I wouldn't want it to be played by anyone else. :) The chemistry between Marius and Cosette is amazing and how Eponine looks at the both of them. I get chills. And the butterfly near the hand of Cosette omg
