This is what completely butchering an incredible musical looks like. Absolutely no vision at all.

Russell Crowe is an actor, NOT a singer. Les Mis is a modern day opera, and is one of the finest musicals ever performed because of the power and grace of its world class vocalists. Watch Phillip Quast sing this song and you will understand why it is sacrilege to let anyone other than the BEST OF THE BEST be given this highest of platforms. Masterpieces require masters of their craft to carry the complex emotion and range with the goal of hitting an absolute home run. There are 1,000 guys on KZbin that could have done this song more justice, and they shouldn’t have had a role this major production, either.

How can we feel cold to this story? As songs speak of the warmth of love, perhaps, remembering this story will break the stone heart of poverty upon the family, hardship on the children and young adults as they grow old fast but only are our young hope, missing family members as the "missing person" syndrome (what did happen to Jean Val Jean's sister?). Beautiful emotion and feeling, but without action of forgiveness and caring with trust, how can the love be formed and forged? Tearing hearts as eyes tear and bursts of held breath are as I remember experiencing when I first saw this film; I know the sacrifice of those who love family, and, others. Have you seen the older movie, along the same pathway, "Silas Miner"?). A tribute I think to the same Vatican requested "Les Miserables". As "I feel" each actor portrays the characters' grief now through the Musical, this story is a song of sadness with a happy ending as we need today in our grieving hearts felt towards each Nations' children, as many, too, struggle alone, and parents asking for someone to care for their own while they die or go to war. You have chosen a beautiful heartfelt song hymn -- the story of Les Miserables, a fictional story based on life"s experiences. I call the story a story song hymn, for what music speaks to a language long forgotten, we need to hear.

Samantha is great but Hooper did a lousy job .The singing is much, much, much better in the 25th anniversary shown on PBS.

I just finished the novel today and I am enamored by it. I am wanting more oft his story and have never seen the show or this film. As I watch this clip, however, I just can't do it. It is already ruining it for me. For anyone who is a fan of the show and/or film, can someone give me some perspective? I 'd love to be open-minded...

I saw Les Miserables live in the 80s in Vancouver BC Canada. I bought the Broadway recording soundtrack back then. Years later I bought the 10th Anniversary DVD which had Colm as Valjean, as well as many other amazing performers. I particularly loved the final song with the entire cast, and Valjean's from all over the world. Was truly amazing! Then when the latest movie came out, I bought the Blu Ray, and then also purchased it on KZbin for convenience. When I saw Colm in the role of the bishop, I was so damn excited! Squee! Squee!

Meanwhile Hooper made them all sing for 10 hours straight for days on end, which, if you ask *ANY* professional singer, means they were in serious danger of permanently damaging their voices. Watch the video by a channel named 'sideways' on how ridiculously bad the performance really is, entirely due to Hooper being ignorant and nobody daring to contradict him.
