I love how he's packing up his things while he's singing. The song sounds like a question, but you can tell he's already made up his mind. It's an interesting characterization bit.

As a theatre major I'm so ridiculously happy with this. Film and Theatre are two different mediums, you can't force either to fit into the other. THIS is the way the movie musical should always have been done, intimately, non-flashy and with true emotion. Not the pre-canned singing and mouthing along. This is the best way to capture what a theatre experience actually is. Alive.

it's amazing, and more amazing if you remember that this is actually "live". they sing and act the songs giving the broadway magic to the movie and that is what makes you say wow when you watch and hear this. it's just awesome.

well with things now it was really inconvenient lmao cast literally had to sing every take (not to mention Hugh Jackman on a water diet) Imagine broadway actors deprived of water having to perform perfectly and repeating the takes unless it's perfect

What I absolutely adored about the movie is how intimate and close the actors seemed to the songs, like it wasn't a song, just their emotions pouring out. Singing it live made it so much more real. You heard every breath, ever sound of the mouth, sounds you wouldn't get from recording the songs in a studio a month earlier. And as Hugh said, singing it live may not be the prettiest at times, but it made it real. The singing may have not been as perfect, but it made it feel true and genuine.

full grown man onto his body through the sewers. Hugh Jackman just blows me away. He is so unique. I've never seen a man who can physically lift so many people. And then be such an understanding, emotional, compassionate, empathetic man. And also be so entertaining making people laugh, making people smile, making people cry. Being able to sing & dance. And then adopting kids in real life & being a good humanitarian & being so generous. I don't know. I can't say one bad thing about Hugh (cont.)

As an actor there is a metaphor I was taught. Imagine your stage is a cup and you can only fill your cup as full as the cup is large. So this being a movie, a much smaller cup than a stage I understand the take that Hugh Jackman is taking on the role. I think he will be winning an Oscar for this role for sure.

This movie is considered one of the biggest contenders to the Academy Awards 2013, the previews were a great success, getting rave reviews and standing ovations, Jackman is most likely going to win an Oscar as industry experts have predicted.

It's important to hear the emotion and acting they put in to their singing, which is something that can transform a song from that of a recording artist, to that of an actor. In this movie all actors are acting and singing (live) at the same time and they're on the film set, not on stage. Believe me, it's not so easy.

What people don't understand is that instead of this movie having the music/singing as the primary focus and acting second, they make the acting the focus and the singing second. And with that comes so much more emotion in the singing than ever before. And personally, while watching this movie, I felt so much more in every single song than I've ever felt watching the concert performances, because of the staggering emotion. It was a choice the director made, and I think it worked very well.

I am so happy he gets this opportunity. Hugh Jackman is such an underrated actor, and he'll get his chance to show his range outside of the famous Wolverine. This is a short clip, but I'm already tearing up. I think he's going to be brilliant. And I'm so happy Hooper decided to let them sing live and tell a story. The music is beautiful and epic, but with performances like this, this story can soar. I can't wait to see "Bring Him Home." I'm going to be a sobbing mess.

The slamming down of his envelopes was so perfectly executed. And oh my word, when he says "Jean ValJean"... Shivers, people. Shivers! We may all have different definitions of the word "powerful", and that's all right--I found this scene to be a superlative definition of the word powerful.

I've seen Les Mis at least 7 times... Each with a different Valjean, and yes I saw Wilkinson live. They all were excellent. There is no one way to perform the role; you have to appreciate that it will be different. I've never heard anyone do this like Jackman does, and I'm sure it all has to do with a different medium (cinema). It's going to be great. Appreciate it for what makes it unique, not what makes it like how you've already seen it.

They did sing it live, but after shooting the movie they went to the studio and recorded the songs again. It's revolutionary because usually they record the music before filming and while shooting try to match their lips to the recordings, but for this movie they recorded after, and had to match their singing to what they did live while shooting.

Actually, it might. When a person is having a crisis of identity, especially a passionate and soul wrenching one, shouting is perfectly acceptable. Just listen to the way Neil Diamond sings "I Am, I Said". It's pretty heart-wrenching. Granted, he doesn't shout it (though he does raise his pitch and volume toward the end of the song), but I wouldn't be a bit surprised or disappointed if he did.

Have any of you considered he made an acting choice to make his voices sound the way it does? He's taking a different viewpoint of the song, which is both commendable and wonderful. Hugh Jackman has had his fair share of experience with musical theater as well as movies. I think whatever acting choices he makes we'll end up loving in the end.

All of you complaining that the actors seem to be "talking" or "speaking" the songs need to realize that Les Miserables is a "sung-through" musical. There is little real dialogue and most of the dialogue is presented through singing. With this being a film vs. a stage version we are getting more intimate with the characters thereby we will have a more intimate version of the songs and not the soaring arias you would hear on a Broadway stage. All the clips so far are bringing that across.

I think the import thing is that i actually believe all the characters even in these little clips, that doesn't always happen in the stage show, most of the time because they are picked for their incredible voices and not necessarily their acting. It's refreshing to see it the other way round. But even so I love most of the voices I've heard from the film.

Quite a few of these actors are theatre actors themselves. Not everyone enjoys the theatre world so a movie of this story isn't going to be the exact same as it is onstage. All of the singing is being recorded at the time the actor is acting on film. This gives the actors time to react with each other and let the emotion come through in their singing with what they are given. This song itself is somewhat of a talk-sing song anyway.

It's not anti climatic, it's very well done; at that point he's reminding himself who he is and having a moral dilemma to himself. Listen to the music in the background too it tails off before he says it. Remember this isn't the end of the song; that comes when he goes to Javert and reveals his prisoner number, and that's the line sung with defiance.
