+oscaar_39 She isn't really wrong , i'm French and to me the only true revolution was the 1871 events of la commune , which hugo refers to in the miserables , the 1789 one was simply the rich using the poor to take over the nobles. The communard movment was genuinely for the people , hence the slaughter and therefore the failure. Fun fact : that Parisian uprising is one of the main source of inspiration for Marx's Communism concept and it is also why the communism color is Red , you can see it in the movie ...

As someone has done this beautiful show before, this film showed everything it is and so much more. It showed both the larger scope and the intimacy of the struggles people in France endured during this time in a way that stage musicals will never be able to do. It also allowed for many overlooked moments in the show to get the time they deserve. People will sit through movies longer than they will stage shows, and this is an example of that. Such a gorgeous film that is worthy of being a classic for years to come.

The emotion of the actors feels so real and intense. It grabs you by the throat, touches you deep inside and doesn't let you go for the entire film. The raw character of the story is so beautifully portrayed. And every time Anne Hathaway sings 'I dreamed a dream', I get goosebumps on my arms and a lump in my throat. The story of Les Miserables has of course been told thousands of times in numerous art forms. The fact that after all those previous stories they succeeded in making such a beautiful film, is really fantastic. Apart from that, they also had to assemble the complete movie of two and a half hours in a catchy trailer. And that has also worked out excellently!

This film is based on one of the most incredible novels writen by a genius, Victor Hugo. There are so many hidden messages, morals and idealistics. The sets are astounding and a lot of art and hard work has gone into them. The actors in this movie portray the characters with immense talent and grace. The vocals and emotions are right on target. They have managed to make a musical not only moving, but also believable. It is in fact a masterpiece. Don't compare it with modern day action movies.

This was the movie that has gotten me into reading the whole brick (the book). I have to be honest here; I am an avid reader. I've read many novels since I was a lot younger, but no other novel has touched my heart and inspired me the most than Les Misérables. One reason is, being Christian as well, I have seen how the author portrayed the true representation of God working in the character's life (e.g. Valjean's redemption through the bishop, etc.). It is the Gospel truth; where man meets his downfall, and then because of God's grace, man becomes newly transformed. Jean Valjean relied not on his own will and understanding throughout the story but to Providence (which is God). Another reason is that the author also boldly unfolded everything that is wrong in our society, from the starving street children in the darkest corners of the suburbs to the blind governing rulers on their lofty thrones. And lastly, no other heroes in the works of literature I have known so far has ever matched the extreme selflessness, humility and Godliness of the protagonist of this novel. The name Jean Valjean is known not for being among the names of the mighty gods like that of Hercules, not for being among the titles of great leaders like that of Hamilton, not even among the superheroes like Superman or among the gallant heroes like Robin Hood. Jean Valjean is merely a man, in fact only a lowly ex-convict who had nothing and is satisfied in nothing more than his redemtion and his love to a child that wasn't even his. His joy isn't for self-comfort, prosperity or wealth but for helping those who are miserables like him. He didn't even want to be credited for his good deeds (e.g. rejecting the Legion of Honor) even though the people knew what he did. He doesn't care about his name or his own benefits. His good deeds are nothing more to him but motivations from the bishop. He risked his life and freedom many times in saving other people either those who are oppressed (Fantine, Cossette and Champmathieu), those who were his rivals (Fauchelevent and Marius), or even his very enemy (Inspector Javert) even though he gained nothing from these but troubles and sufferings. Even to his last breath, he bought nothing else but a simple crucifix for himself and gave all the rest of his wealth to Cosette and to charity. His grave is also anonymous and doesn't even have his name on it. For Valjean, his faith is enough to continue on his journey.

As for this movie, I was attracted by the fact that so many famous actors (actors that I like a lot) are actually singing instead of talking. So, I watched. That's true. His voice isn't very sing-songy but I think it's just perfect for him. Definitely how I imagined Javert, deep and booming. I always get chills during that one "Shoot me now or shoot me later" line, he sings it so well.

The only problem is that they sang WAY to much!

Isn't that kind of the whole point of a musical?

Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, in my opinion, sounded amazing. And so did the others like Anne and Eddie. It was amazing. I loved how Russell's voice was very smooth and awesome.
