People criticizing the glee version don't get the context it was used in, in the show. They think it was sung as a duet when it as supposed to be two individuals singing the same song at a different time, but their voices were singing at the same time in the show. They weren't really singing it together. They both had their dreams destroyed. They both sang the song as individuals alone.

So... I sang this for a group of friends, and I held the high note on shame. They stopped what they were doing and stared at me.

For anyone talking about not being able to hit the lower note, it can help if you hold your diaphragm (area under chest, above belly) be as you sing the note. Another thing, you know the area in your throat that is stimulated when you hum? If you make the voice come more from that area, you can hit lower notes :) It should feel like your humming it but your voice is coming out. Warming up also helps with range. I can go from low alto to high soprano after a thorough warm up most days :) Just some tips

Thanks, I was struggling with that :) 😃😃

Hitting the low note?? The low note geez that was fine the high parts are the ones that make me dumbfounded
@madisongracemusic7 жыл бұрын
SammiiCatt that just causes you to push out the note which is bad for not only ur vocal chords but also makes you way out of tune. If you can't hit it. Don't strain your voice

I love both Glee and Les Mis and both versions of this song. The two person part of Glee works for the storyline of the particular episode it was in. Rachel is looking for her birth mother but she realizes she'll never be able to find her or "live the years together" like the song says, "but there are dreams that can not be..." This was originally written for Les Mis and does perfectly depict how Fantine is feeling. So I don't think anyone has the right to say any of these versions are "wrong."

Well, in Glee both women are isolated and wish to be together. That's the sense of the song. Lea Michele and Idina Menzel did a flawless performance of this song and they didn't sang it for "Les Miz", so the context has to be a little different. And if you think, they are honoring the original song, by spreading this iconic music once again. Yes, it is not the song of this karaoke video, but one of the most wow performance of it!

I don't understand why everyone is hating on Glee. For the record I'm not a fan of the show and do not watch it. However, voice-wise Idina Menzel and Lea Michele gave a wonderful performance. There were some parts where they shouldn't have sung together, but overall it was still very moving. I know it's not the original and it's Glee, but you have to admit there is vocal ability there. I mean it's Elphaba singing!! :P

@assassinOfRomeAOR I think the point of commenting is the oposite of keeping our opinions to ourselves. Your comment was your opinion as this comment is mine. I do find it unfortunate that as soon as Glee covers a song, people seem to start obsessing over that version and ignore everything else. But that seems to be the way it goes . . .

Glee hasn't got it wrong! Glee does a different version of the song. In Glee, Rachel finds out who's her mother and, of course changes the original idea of this song, but re-interpretate it. If you actually see the episode you will understand the context of their interpretation and it makes a lot of sense.
@klosch8412 жыл бұрын
Just to clear it up.. Glee didn't do this song as a duet. it was two people singing it for themselves in different locations but they merged them together.

It wasn't meant to be sung representing Fantine in Les Mis, Obviously you don't know the storyline why they sung it as a duet. They play mother/daughter separated since Rachel was a baby. The song portrays their thoughts and emotions of being separated.

You don't have to change the lyrics to re-intepret a song. Changing the melody, or the way it is sung in anyway is a re-interpretation. Singing it as a mother-daughter duet was a re-interpretation. And this video is for the Les Miserables version of the song, I understand that. But you were saying that "Glee got it wrong" when they didn't. As previously stated, they just sand the song different to the original.
