I haven't seen this jam since 1981- I think that's when it was shown on TV. I remember not thinking much of Les Paul at the time but as the years went by, I learned to appreciate who he was and what he'd done. I got to meet him in 1988 at Fat Tuesday's in NYC. Very nice guy--very gracious--I got his autograph.

Thank YOU, rknrne, for uploading this. What a THRILL it is to see Jeff with his childhood hero - "The Wizard of Waukesha"! Les's having a great time and is right in his element! Please don't reduce it to America vs. Britain.

That was really enjoying to watch...thanks for posting this, I don't enjoy too many guitar jams/duels...it turns into everyone trying to play at once and to hell what the other guy is playing or doing.....Les Paul and Beck were having a two way conversation...bloody brilliant

This is old age rock, Les Paul had about 7O years old, suffered arthritis in his fingers and a problem in his ear called Meniére syndrom, he had a 40' s guitar with a 40's sound and 40' s technique ( almost no bending of strings at all) and even so he still had the crave to play guitar... in front of a very much brilliant young Jeff beck with a guitar and amplifier of the 70's. !

@claypigeon77 You are so right. Billy is an amazing (underrated) guitar player in his own right, but he is also a class act as a musician and human being. He understood that this jam was not about him, and stepped back to a supporting role. I remember hearing him speak about this show in an interview. He was asked to host the premiere of Rock and Roll Tonight, and given the freedom to do what he wanted. He wanted to do a show about guitarists, and chose two that he greatly admired.

I have never understood the supposed Fender/Gibson rivalry in the minds of musicians. Neither guitar is really superior to the other. I can say this because I am a luthier it is my profession to know instruments. They are different tools for different jobs. To me that argument is as silly as a bunch of painters sitting around arguing about which brush head is the most useful. Banter aside very cool love to see both these guys play. We miss you Les!

@rknrne Amen! El Becko played a Les Paul in the original Jeff Beck Group. He switched between Pauls and Strats in Beck, Bogert and Appice and the Blow By Blow/Wired period. Nowadays Gibson has a deal with him---he signs and plays fifty of the reproduction '54 LP modified Standard Beck used on Blow By Blow, and they sell for $25,000 or thereabout.

Beck and Paul look like they're having a great time. I love Beck's fake attempt to de-tune Paul's guitar around 7:25. Great stuff.

If this is about 1983, then Les is about 68 y.o in this video - only a year older than Jeff Beck is now. WOW - using Les' and Jeff's physical appearance and abilities as a gauge, I don't see why Jeff won't be playing well into his 100's. :) Jeff looks younger today then Les did at the time, and Les was able to keep laying until his mid 90's.

Jeff can really do it all. You might also like "Jeff piano sax jam" from the red white and blues sessions at abbey road, or his playing on "key to the highway" with bb king.

I remember seeing this on TV when I was very young. I always thought Les Paul unplugged Jeff beck because he was blowing him away. Funny I didin't remember Billy Squier being involved - or maybe not.

I dont know about that. They have soundmen on tv shows ..blame them. Check the expression on the sax players face. I think he was enjoying JB's style of play. his solo just b4 the attack (5:00)w tremolo & harmonics is still one of my favorite licks.

The wad of duct tape was because his Line-In socket was busted. So he had to tape it all down or there would have been a risk of the sound failing

Why isn't this sort of stuff on TV? Why do we have to put up with constant bullshit from ignorant program directors, when we can view two highly evolved souls be so accurate and bring so much joy to our spirit? These MTV folks are missing out. Maybe they think we can't pay for it. Naw, I think like 99.9% of the gross population they just have a lead ear and little or no sense of rhythm, Gabe P.
