In 1984 I traveled from California to Europe to hear Les Arts Florissants. I spent an afternoon in Paris with them at their Rue de Paradis headquarters, and then a couple days at Ambronay for their performances of Purcell's Dido & Aeneas. We took the TGV from Paris to Lyon, as I recall, and I sat with cellist David Simpson, whose individual recordings I have since collected. At the hotel in Ambronay following the first night's rehearsal, William Christie bought me a Chartreuse vert. Though I adore the early LAF for personal sentimental reasons, I am just stunned by the monumental beauty of their recent endeavors. What a treasure they are, worthy of our regular attention.

Das ist ein unbeschreibliches Erlebnis ein Konzert in dieser wunderschönen Kirche zu erleben, dort über 1 h bei schöner Musik sitzen zu dürfen und die Fenster anzuschauen und nicht wie bei einer Besichtigung nur ein paar Minuten dort zu verweilen. Noch eindrücklicher ist das wenn das Konzert während der Dämmerung stattfindet, wenn man sieht wie sich das Licht und die Farben der Fenster ändern. Das sollte man nicht verpassen wenn man mal ein paar Tage in Paris ist.

Une grande réussite artistique humaine Les instruments conçus si parfaitement pour créer les sons qui constituent notre musique. Notation musicale développée comme un langage que nous traduisons en son ! Les archives qui nous ont conservé des siècles de musique ! Les années de pratique et d'étude que chaque musicien et chanteur ont consacrées pour les amener à ce moment ! Je suis déprimé depuis longtemps face à l’état du monde. L’humanité semble être une grave erreur et une malédiction pour la planète. Cette performance me donne un peu d'espoir.

Ahlala ! Le mélange des voix hommes et femmes me pose toujours autant problème, mais il faut reconnaître que le Maître gère cela à la perfection.

Bonjour, à la différence de ce qui peut se faire quand on chante Bach ou Haendel, et où des "contre ténors" sont utilisés dans les pupitres féminins, dans la musique française, les voix d'alto (appelées "haute-contre") sont de base prévues pour des chanteurs masculins. Marc-Antoine Charpentier lui-même avait un timbre de haute-contre, et interprétait souvent des petits rôles dans ses propres opéras. L'emploi de voix masculines est donc tout à fait légitime dans cette musique ! Il se révèle d'ailleurs adapté à la population française, ayant un timbre de voix naturel plus aigu que la moyenne de ses voisins.

Die Aufführung ist prächtig gelungen und eine große Bereicherung, wie überhaupt das Ensemble und ihr Leiter sich um die Einspielung der Werke von Marie-.Antoine Charpentier mehr als nur verdient gemacht haben und beweisen, dass es immer ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis ist, sich diesem Komponist mit diesen Interpreten zu widmen, sei es das Te Deum (wie hier), Missa Assumpta est Maria, Litanies de la Vierge (wie hier), oder Judicum Salomonis, Acteon oder Médée.

@@dieguzki yes! Je suis un fan des Arts florissants. J'ai la petite remarque par plaisanterie, mais c'est surtout dans le coffret de 29 CD de Harmonia Mundi 2009 en 70 chefs-d'oeuvre (que j'ai acheté en 2010 chez FNAC à Louvain-la-Neuve) où la prononciation latine peut se faire vraiment remarquer.

My understanding, correct me if I am wrong, is that this particular ensemble was pieced together to match the exact number of instruments and vocalists so that we could hear the music exactly the way it was originally heard and intended even down to the period instruments. It is exquisite.
