Marc-Antoine Charpentier ist hauptsächlich als Komponist geistlicher Werrke bekannt. Er war sicher sehr talentiert und kann sich mit dem bekannteren Lully durchaus messen. Allerdings war das Problem vieler hochbagabter Komponisten aus der Zeit Lully's, daß dieser wohl eine sehr schwiierige und machtorientierte Persönlichkeit hatte und daher viele Leute um sich herum am Hochkommen hinderte und das Opernmonopol für sich allein beansspruchte. Andere Komponisten beschränkten sich dann auf weniger prestigeträchtige Genres, was teilweise zu dem unberechtigten Vergessenwerden führte. Aber glücklicherweise werden sie wiederentdeckt und gelangen so zu neuem Ruhm.. Erst mit Rameau und Willibald von Gluck gelang es der Musik, sich aus dem Bannkreis der Nachwirkung von Lully's Einfluß zu befreien.

Man sieht an dieser Musik, daß Barockmujsik auch heute noch an Anktualität nichts verloren hat. Jeder dürfte aus dem Präludium die Eurovisionshymne herausgehört haben. Auch eine Melodie aus Händels Zadok the Priest fand in die Fifa-Hymne Eingang.
