Fun fact: Long before this episode released the guy who voiced Tad Strange, despite being told not to publicise it yet, added it to his online resume and people noticed it and immediately started theorising that it was a new character related to Bill Cipher, and decided he would be a purple square to compliment/contrast Bill's yellow triangle, with a bowler hat instead of a tophat. There was fanart and everything, people dressed up as him at cons. Alex Hirsch tried to tell people it was just a one-off joke and not anything big, and they of course didn't believe him. When this episode did finally air, some people even accused him of changing it because of their theories and he had to explain that the episode was already made long before.

Probably purple/yellow because he voices Cecil Baldwin (which is also his real name) in wtnv, who's always depicted in purple colors to match the wtnv logo, and his 'antagonist' is a constantly smiling guy who's depicted in yellow.

In my opinion this episode really highlights the tragedy of Stan’s character. He’s spent his entire life second to Ford but never minded because his brother was the only friend he needed. But then he fell out with Ford and his life became a mess. After they briefly reunited, he spent 30 years trying to rescue Ford, and when he finally did, the only other person who could truly appreciate this accomplishment was furious at him. That’s why Stan tried running for mayor, not so much that he wanted to prove he was better than Ford, but to prove to himself that he was good for something.

Fun fact: Tad Strange is voiced by Cecil Baldwin, who is the narrator of the podcast Welcome to Night Vale. Both shows actually released their first episodes on the same day, and they both focus on a town with a lot of weirdness going on, though WTNV leans more toward horror than Gravity Falls does. Both also have a lot of eye motifs, now that I think about it.

There's a theory out there that the reason stan doesn't freak out is because the tie disconnects your brain from your body so its like an out of body experience (still inside you brain), essentially forced disassociating and stan is just used to it while soos is not.

While this episode is mostly filler, I like how it puts Stan's relationship with the twins in the spotlight again, and how he wants to leave an impact on them whilst not feeling overshadowed by Ford. Meanwhile, there's a certain character who makes a comeback here who I'm not pleased with seeing again, but then again, I'm sure Elijah's not going to like seeing him again either. Edit: Also, thank you, Anex for your editing skills in bringing Elijah's reaction videos to life.

Fun fact! This episode introduced Tad Strange, a background character that sometimes appears throughout season 2. When gravity falls was airing season 2, Tad Strange's voice actor added the name of the character in his bio on Twitter before this episode aired. Fans, of course, began theorising who Tad Strange might be and what role he would have in the story. Weirdly enough, the most common theory was that Tad Strange was gonna be Bill Cypher's secret twin brother, a purple cube with one eye wearing a bowler hat. Never change, gravity falls fandom.

The commentary track on this one, like Irrational Treasure, is both hilarious and depressing as it’s largely Alex explaining “when we made this episode there was this concept called ‘gaffs’ where a political candidate could say something horrible and there would be negative political consequences for them… this was before the 2016 election when we were all very young and naive”

Why did Soos go to, like, a different place?”* Soos was just raking the lawn, so suddenly starting to sing, dance, and eat a pinecone was a somewhat… _incongruous_ experience for him. Stan was _expecting_ to go out on stage and say whatever happened to pop into his head, so he didn't feel a massive disconnection from what happened.

The title, which would go over most kids' heads, is a reference to the Manchurian candidate, a "fictional" movie about a Russian sleeper agent running for president of the United States. Or Senator, It has been a long time since I watched this movie, but I am thinking president.
