I love the expression that Amity gets when Luz tells her about her dad. Absolute shock and dawning dread. Because it's not just about the fact that she just learned about Luz's dad being dead, or the fact that, that day was the anniversary of his death. It's also the realization that she knows the face that Luz was making, that look of almost carefree joy. Because she's seen Luz making it, multiple times now. And now she finally realizes what it means. It means that Luz is scared, and stressed, and overall just doesn't know what to do. But she doesn't think that talking about it would help, so she puts on a brave face, and goes about like nothing is wrong.

I'm so glad Dana did a episode about something that isn't always mentioned. Everyone always assumes that the Dad just leaves and doesn't want to live with the mom and her child-- when in reality it's so much different. My mom lost her father when she was 18 in her senior year of high school, still to this day she acts the same way Luz did when it was the day of her Dad's passing. Dana and the crew did such a amazing job with the emotions in this episode
@sunlitsonata68532 жыл бұрын
Part of it may have to do with the fact that Dana lost her own father in a car accident at only 11 years old. She probably went through very similar grief and could project those similar harsh feelings through Luz.

Well, my dad left our family when I was 3 years old. Many years later he tried to get back in touch occassionally, but overall he's just not a good person and I ignore him. So does my mother. My brothers once got duped by him too, not sure if they still keep in touch, but yeah honestly some people deserve to be cut out and you're better off without them. So many people keep in touch with asshole family members because they think family is some sort of sacred bond you can't ever get rid of but that's BS. There's even the whole "blood is thicker than water" saying except the original saying has the opposite meaning - "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" - which would roughly translate to 'Your chosen family have a stronger bond than your biological family'. Something I can relate to. Surround yourselves with people who love you for who you are and won't sell your house without your knowledge and run off to another country.

14:30 - THANK YOU, I’m starting to see people say they’re “tired of Lumity” already and I’m just??? Do some of y’all not realize how hard it was to get up to this point, ESPECIALLY in children’s animation? Please do realize some of us literally never got to feel so represented up until now 😭
@jos-josradvanji62032 жыл бұрын
I think it's more the frustration that people want more of the main plot and not that they don't accept the representation. I am going to be 100% honest here,I've been there too. I mean.. to be even more honest... I am bi but where I lived, despite there not really being representation in the media it never bothered me at all. One time I heard of "being gay" randomly and I asked my mom what it means and she just casually said "oh that's when instead of liking a boy you like a girl or if you're a boy you like another boy. some people are like that." And that was it. I understood,didn't question it again and took it as a normal thing. So I personally don't get the excitement that for example this reactor gets and sometimes I grow tired when the plot doesn't move and the show becomes more about the two than the overall mystery. And there's a simple reason for that too.. the show didn't present itself as representation and romance focused when it started. It was a mystery show with beautifully drawn characters and magic. And a lot of people want exactly that and find out more. So when the focus of the show isn't what it started with they get frustrated. Personally I think that is valid. I wouldn't condone hating on the show for it since it's the writers choice what they want to do with it but I will just say I understand the "tired" people too.

I was looking forward to your vid since I saw the episode. This episode firmly cemented Lumity as THE healthiest couple I have EVER seen on television. They communicate, they're supportive, and they're understanding. Yes, Luz has been lying and keeping things from Amity, but we already knew she has a tendency to consider herself a burden to others and will do everything she can to not be and foist her problems on them. Both girls have emotional baggage but they may be just what each other needed to start processing and healing that. Also, kudos to Dana and the crew for the realistic depiction of dealing with grief, NOT make Amity instantly forgive her father, and for sidestepping all the relationship drama clichés they could EASILY fall into with Lumity. I’m so happy we got a not just lumity, but an amity centric episode. Of course if amity is in an episode there will be lumity moments, but I love that that’s not the main focus of the episode. It was great to see how far amity’s character development has come and it was amazing to see that she’s opening up to her dad and they’re bonding. I love that this episode really shows amity as her own character and not just the other half of lumity, or just Luz’s girlfriend. She’s her own character.
@noahasmr112 жыл бұрын
Don’t get me wrong, every time a lumity moment happens I freak the hell out because it’s amazing to see the representation, but I love seeing it shown as a regular, healthy relationship rather than one that stands out as abnormal, or that has to be fought extra hard for to be recognized as a real relationship in the demon realm. Because in the boiling isles homophobia doesn’t exist. So Luz and Amity’s relationship is just like any other relationship between two kids their ages. That’s what makes it so special in my eyes because they’re not treated like they’re different than any other relationship just because they’re both girls.
@noahasmr112 жыл бұрын

I was a closeted gay but had a secret boyfriend and one day he just dies and I had to act like I was just sad cause I lost a friend. And the day I came out to my family and friends I just felt so weak that I fell to the ground shaking. But with words of assurance and validation from my friends and family, I started to feel strong again. So I totally loved it when Luz saved the day. She lost a family member and got her strength back because of her girlfriend. While I lost my boyfriend and got my strength back because of my family and friends. Amity’s “That was Mom’s dream” is relatable for me because I always wanted to make my mom proud, and always pursued to be good at school, but when the time came for me to choose what I wanted to do, I was blank, I couldn’t choose, and despite my mother telling me to choose whatever I want, my fear of disappointing her overwhelmed me, and even though I’m about to finish studying my career, I still question myself if I chose right, with the exact same fear of disappointing her. And I didn’t have my father because my parents are divorced so I didn’t have his point of view, I know it’s not like Amity’s dad who is so invested in work and providing his family to notice what they really need, nor Luz’s deceased loneliness after his dad passed away, yet I feel like something was missing from my childhood, that could give me a better perspective of my present and my future.

How you’re feeling is understandable. Validation from a parent is important, and since you only have one parent in your life, it makes sense you’d be afraid of losing that praise and support. My advice for you would be to talk to your mother. It’s important that you get to explore and find your own hobbies. This is your life, not your mothers. This episode hit me like a truck. I lost my dad about 8 years ago, so I absolutely relate to Luz. But I also had a very difficult relationship with him where I struggled until the end to get his approval or attention, so Amity's issues resonated with me, too. I got punched in the gut from both sides, woo! But honestly, this is one of my favorite episodes of any show that deals with loss or parental issues. I've seen it at least 10 time already, and will likely continue coming back to it if I need a good cry.

I swear Dana Terrace is over in her at her desk like: "how can I make fans go even more crazy about Lumity". On a side note the whole thing with Luz's dad is just heartbreaking to me. Screw you Disney, The Owl House doesn't fit our "quote on quote brand". This show and the team behind it deserves way more respect.

Honestly, in both episodes we’ve seen him in Alador has reminded me of Entrapta, but like an exhausted Entrapta. I’m glad he finally seemed to realize in this episode that he’s been a neglectful parent, and hopefully one day when Odalia is arrested for being Evil or something, Amity and the twins will have a decent parent left to live with.

I am EXACTLY like that while reacting to TOH in terms of appreciation of the representation we didn't have. I hear a lot online about how it's "disgusting" or "creepy" (not to mention other stronger stuff) for 30+ year old to like cartoon stuff and ship their couples. We didn't have any of that. And every little tiny show of affection between a non-straight couple in a kid's show is a huge deal. Not to talk about the awesome way they grow as a couple and deal with problems as a couple plus their own issues. It was just unthinkable before and not something you could find, even less on such a big company like Disney. So...i do too pause and replay and freak out at every little show of affection or any act that show them as an actual couple.

The animation during the scene where Luz talks about her dad is beautiful. The colors, I don’t want to call them muted, but how somber they feel… Amity’s expression when she realizes how much pain Luz has been keeping bottled up inside is just… it’s a gut punch. The real star though is Sarah Nicole Robles’s voice acting. She always does good work and I love how she plays Luz but this is most genuine I’ve ever heard her. And it’s a subtle performance too, which is so hard to do in voice acting! The whole scene is just so sincere and it hurts me every time I watch it. Owl Crew, you did amazing. Got me all teary eyed.
@skinnysnorlax93562 жыл бұрын
Whomever drew that look of absolute shock on Amity’s face watching Luz come clean about her grief deserves a big raise and a spa day, HOLY SHIT.😭👏🏻👏🏻 Sarah-Nicole Robles knocked it outta the park with her voice acting during that entire scene, and I can’t imagine how personal that episode must’ve been for Dana Terrace to write considering she lost her dad around the same age as Luz. (I’m of the opinion that Luz’s dad died in a car accident just like Dana’s, since the 🚨 on the Abomaton’s head must have reminded her of ambulance sirens going off in the aftermath of the accident.)
