I feel Darius was either friends with, or at least knew a past version or even versions of Hunter. Which is why he looked sad at Hunters inauguration. He treated him badly either because he didn't want to form another connection to someone who was just going to be killed, or he didn't recognize Hunter as the same person. But immediately changed his tune as soon as Hunter showed a rebellious side, that may have even been reminiscent of the past Hunter.

It's even more messed up when you remember the book describing the Grimmwalker. They start off as babies then grow. Belos raised multiple clones of his brother from infancy and felt nothing of killing them.

Folks have done the math and said there wouldn’t have been enough time to raise that many generations (based on the number of Golden Guard masks) and one of the memory pictures shows an adult hand coming out of a weird alchemical pit. And then we have Hunter being the youngest Golden Guard. So my personal theory is that most of the Golden Guards were made closer to adulthood, but after so many betrayals Belos decided to try making one a lot younger, hoping that indoctrinating one from childhood would make them more loyal. Of course if that’s true, that just makes it extra fucked up that he tossed Hunter aside so nonchalantly.

You know, it makes more sense why Darius would be against Belos. The previous golden guard, who Darius said was his own role model and mentor, was one of the grimwalkers that Belos got rid of. Darius probably saw it go down in secret, so he was pushed over to be against him. It also explains why he cares a lot for Hunter.

I do think Darius started off being kind of resentful of Hunter replacing his mentor, especially seeing him follow Belos so blindly. See his anger at the beginning of Any Sport In A Storm - he’s not mad Hunter is wearing the old Golden Guard symbol because Hunter is unworthy of the Emperor’s Coven, he’s mad because this obedient clone is wearing the symbol of his mentor. But when Hunter finally shows a rebellious streak, Darius has to re-evaluate his opinion, and gets attached to Hunter (which we can see in Darius’s reaction to hearing Hunter is stuck in Belos’s mind)

I'd like to take a moment to point out that when belos shot a vine thing right next to hunters cheek in hunting palisman he didn't look even remotely surprised, just afraid and resigned. and he IMMEDIATELY apologized in what was very clearly not the first time. and the fact that when he thinks Darius is about to get passed with him at the end of any sport in a storm, he closes his eyes and braces himself but makes no effort to move away. that is conditioning with a capital c right there and it's absolutely horrifying. they do such a FANTASTIC job at conveying so much about hunter and belos's behind the scene dynamic just with little implications and don't overstate it and that takes EFFORT, and they portray abuse so respectfully and accurately and its just,, idk I really appreciate seeing such a well written example of abuse that doesn't feel like a pity story, there was clearly a LOT of effort put into making it feel real and dana very clearly cared about what she was writing and I appreciate it.

Theory: the reason why Phillip is a witch hunter is because he’s from the 1600s, which is when people believe in witchcraft, and the Salem Witch Trials took place. In one picture you can see Phillip and Caleb (the theorised name for phillip’s brother) pretending to be witch hunters and holding sticks, while real witch hunters march in the distance. The reason he’s evil is due to society teaching him that witches are evil, so now he’s doing anything to kill them all. Also fun fact: if hunter is a clone of phillip’s brother - a sort of son - then hunter calling bellos uncle is accurate. He’s his “father’s” brother.

It's like this transition from him being a cartoony villain to being like an actual human. He just now seemed immediately more real. He's not a demon king seeking to conquer humanity anymore. I just don't know how that would work. It looked like the witch sent him to the demon realm..which means he was on earth before..which means the witch IS still on earth. Which means.. maybe the day of Unity isn't "bringing unity" but the name of the witch that he tries to get back to to kill her. Which means it couldn't be Edas family because those are all in the demon realm o-o But at the same time,the last time we've been to the human realm there was no magic there at all so it wouldn't make sense for the witch to be able to cast a spell in the human realm to banish him to the demon realm. And everything else we've seen seemed to have happened in the demon realm seeing how the people all had the pointy ears and stuff. So..if we were in the demon realm the whole time what did the witch actually do to Belos? It looked like a teleportation spell because it was golden but where would she have ported him and why? o-o So many questions.

Any other writing team I’d be worried… but the crew have shown they know how to prioritize story elements and not over complicate or cloud things. Theory: The cardinal we saw on Philip's brother's shoulder in episode 9 is Flapjack Hunter's palisman, is the Philip's brother's witch girlfriend's palisman(jeez that was a mouth full)basically Flapjack belongs to the witch girlfriend And the reason Flapjack suggested the name Caleb in episode 13 for Hunter to go under cover as is because that was the name of Philip's brother. Alright so here’s my two cents on the Philip backstory: Around the same age, I think philip is younger, (maybe the same age gap as eda/Lilith for parallels?) Both grew up in gravesfield 1600’s. Based on one portrait of the two playing together while some mob forms in the background, I’d guess they grew up around it, maybe even playing pretend witch hunters. Either way he grew up hating witches because of this. The two were close and it looks like “Hunter” (not sure if it was his name or if it’s a pun instead) had always been a carver having whittled what I assume to be the first mask of Belos. The two grew up probably becoming witch hunters and making themselves heroes to the town, hence the statue that exists. (This or for whatever reason, they left their hometown and founded gravesfield. We don’t have many clear pictures for that time period) One day a witch from the boiling isles comes through a portal and meets the brothers. “Hunter” is fascinated by this display and follows her. Belos is far more ingrained in his witch bad mentality, but “Hunter” is curious and follows her to the boiling isles. Belos holds witches in disgust but also recognizes he stands no chance without magic as well, eventually discovering glyphs and later on carving them into his skin. Perhaps his hope was that would let him do magic but obviously it didn’t and instead likely resulted in his curse. “Hunter” falls in love with the witch leaving Belos jealous. The curse causes him to transform, but instead of despising him and trying to harm him, “Hunter” embraces him. I think from there he convinces him to try out life in the boiling isles. That there is beauty and love there too. For a while the brothers along with “Hunter’s” wife, whom I assume is a clawthorne. The couple had a kid, and the child learns carving skills from “Hunter.” He also begins making palismen, flapjack being his own. Either due to one accidentally breaking or one breaking during an attempt to calm cursed Philip back down, a palisman breaks which causes him to realize how he can keep his curse at bay. He continues to ask “Hunter” for more and more, which “Hunter” doesn’t love as he likely cares for the creatures he’s carved and brought to life, but Philip is a manipulative bitch and gets it to continue for a while. Philip still discontent returns to his quest for a portal. He drags “Hunter” along with him to eclipse lake, where a confrontation breaks out. Perhaps it is “Hunter” standing up for himself, or maybe him trying to convince Philip to stay, but it ends in a fight with Philip killing “Hunter” Philip is run out of whatever town he was in (presumably wherever the clawthornes home is). In this time he also decides to basically commit genocide and learns of the collector The events of elsewhere and elsewhen happen, and I believe that Bonesborough is one of the final places he gets run out of as Philip. The collector teaches him how he can get to his goal, likely with some motive they haven’t revealed behind the day of unity’s end. Philip then takes on the mantle of belos, using a mask his brother had once carved for him to hide his face, not just because nobody liked Philip, but also due to his scarring from the curse worsening. But there was still one other thing. He was human. His ears gave that away clear as day. So he had to fix that too, and cut his ears to resemble that of a witches (I believe this is the painting with him in front of the mirror with the knife.) With knowledge from the collector and all four glyphs allowing more complex programming and combos he slowly ascends to power. He creates grimwalkers to assist him, likely partially due to him missing his past joy pre boiling Isles with “Hunter” Final thought: a major fact that was working against the Belos is Philip directly theory pre-confirmation this episode was age. Time seems to pass similarly to earth based Yesterday’s lie so it can’t be that. But we know now that Belos *is* Philip, so how has he lived that long? (About 350 years since it was mid 1600’s century when he got there and current day is probably like 2010 at the earliest) My two theories are a. The palisman while keeping the curse at bay also slowed his aging or b. that it has something to do with the glyphs he carved on his arm. Letting him live long, but at a price.

Oh god, so much stuff to unpack... Within Belos's mind, there were at least 16 masks. That means if we average the hundreds of years Belos has lived, we can assume that the Grimwalkers never lived past their 20s. Belos was a witch hunter and named Hunter...Hunter. He named him after the purpose he wanted his brother to fufill. You can see in the background paintings multiple images of Belos and his brother. His brother seemed to have fallen in love with a witch, which caused Philip to kill him with knife. It's possible the witch was a Clawthorne, given the repeated bird imagery associated with Philip's brother, and an ancestor of Eda, Lilith, and Dell.

This right here was the moment Belos went from merely being a "good" villain to being a FREAKING AMAZING ONE. He's so menacing and scary, and his treatment of Hunter once he learns the truth . . . Belos DOES NOT CARE, and I always love that in a villain (i.e. Horde Prime). I know it's not exactly fair to keep saying this, but this is yet another way Owl House is better than Amphibia, even in the latter's final season. After learning both their backstories, Belos is DEFINITELY a stronger villain than Andrias or The Core, and I cannot WAIT to see what he does next.

2:00 - Actually, Darius and Eberwolf didn't capture Raine. Raine escaped (or "escaped") and then _Kikimora_ caught them, and Darius was very annoyed at her being there. This feels like a very different Collector than the one we saw in the Owl Beast's memory during "Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door", but to be fair we only saw them for a few seconds and from the perception of the Owl Beast. Naturally Luz knows about witch hunters, they do teach about the Salem Witch Trials in school, especially here in Southern New England (Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), where the town of Salem is just a school field trip away. (Fun fact: not a single witch was killed during the Witch Hunts. Every person they murdered was innocent.)

@@synthellaart1587 Sure, but a LOT of people just watch shows casually. Most writers will at least make the reveals themselves obvious enough for the casual viewers to pick up on. I feel like this episode drops reveals every 10 seconds and then glosses over most of them because there's no time. We've reached a point where I literally would not be able to keep up with what's going on without having other fans point things out to me. And I'm not just a casual viewer; I'm enough of a fan to blow off studying for exams in favor of watching Owl House reaction videos. If I can't keep up, then the literal children who watch this show on regular TV probably can't either. I'm not saying this is bad. It's just something that this show is doing that most similar shows choose not to do, with valid reasoning behind that choice.

I have an idea about Philip's past, & there are historical evidence to it. The mid-1600 were the times when people got so scared about Pegan rituals (in which it's how the word Witch is made, & how we were named Witches, men possessed by Demons, & other "god knows what") to the point where they slaughter many in the name of "god knows what". Because of that, it's likely that Philip was one of those people who participated in the massacre (to a point where he seems to be a fanatic psycho), only to encounter a literal Witch. That particular witch sent the boys into the realm of the decaying titan. The brother clearly, but slowly, grew attached to the witches & demons. Philip likely killed him to protect his own beliefs, & because of the story I shared may be why Philip attempts to eradicate all inhabitance within the titan. It's his idea of "saving humanity". If you don't believe me, then let me ask you. Did Philip named this entire world "The Demon Realm"?
