Setting up for stomach massage use the same springs you use for footwork and place a pad close to the edge of the carriage. Round: Hands front of the carriage Reach back: hands-on shoulder blocks Reach up: 2 springs and lots of lift from the back Twist: 2 springs both legs straighten evenly. #Reformer #PilatesStomachMassage

Loving your series of videos, this is very helpful, I didn't really understand it before. I find hip circles really hard to do. Maybe you can do a tip on this some time,

OMG Hip Circles are so hard! I noticed I have not filmed it on the Spine corrector so I will have to do that. But stomach massage reach back is so essential for hip circles on the mat. I do have a "how-to" here in my mat playlist and I do teach them in my online weekly mat classes. But, yes, I've added the SPine corrector and a "tips for hip circles" to my filming list. Stay tuned! xx~LL

Lesley, great video.. as usual! Can you address the heel drop, i.e when it happens and why it happens? I've seen it done in both the round back and tall back portions of stomach massage, and then eliminated for reach and twist portions. I notice in your video you only do it in the tall back portion. Thank you!!

How funny, I was so busy talking about how to connect your feet to the footbar and talking I didn't lower and lift!! In my other stomach massage how to's I show the lower and lift in the round and reach back. I do not lower and lift on the reach up and twist. On the twist it makes a lot of since why you wouldn't because it really is messy on most and doens't help you twist more. On the reach up the lower lift disappears because (and I may be making this up) but for me you don't need them any more. You are so connected to your seat and your center that it's all about focusing on reaching out of your lower back. You don't have the hands on the front or back anymore to help you and so you've already got a lot going on. Now, for your question about why lower and lifting your heels exists... It's another level of the "tendon stretch" after your do footwork on the Reformer. And, you do that not to stretch the calf but to connect your legs to your center. So, you should feel your seat connection more and more with each heel lift/lower. Then on Stomach Massage its another opportunity to connect your legs to your center in a seated position. I hope this helps! I think finding a way to find your seat connection in the footwork lower/lift or "tendon stretch" will help you find the magic in it for Stomach Massage...ps...it may take some time. Some days it takes me longer than others! haha Thanks for your great question xx~LL

I like the tip with putting your hands on your shoulders. Any tips/ques on how to get a client out of their hip flexors when doing stomach massage? TIA

Oh those darn tight hip flexors! Honestly, if people are really tight there and/or have weak abdominals and seat muscles they are going to feel it there. And, until they strengthen those weak muscles and open up the tight ones it will be a point of pain for them. But, that isn't their get out of jail free card! Instead, I recommend making sure the bar is on a lower setting. I use a Gratz reformer so the bar isn't as high as some Reformers. Cue them to push from the back of their legs! And, pull themselves in by pulling their heels to their seat. I also recommend they do Shoulder Bridge, Table on the Wunda Chair, Breathing on the Cadillac and check out my short box series where I use the magic circle or theraband to turn my seat on. Hi Lesley, I find it difficult to reach and hold onto the carriage as I have short arms. Is there a modification? Great tips :)

Hi Kerry, absolutely great question. It is more important that you are close to your carriage end and not move back to reach them. But, here are some options. You can take a foam roller and lay it in front of your shoulder rests and put your hands there. It is not the same grip so I would invest when you're ready in a "moon box" or you could take a yoga block in front of each one. Although that option won't be as stable. xx~LL

I have long arms and struggle with Straight Back. I put my hands behind the shoulder blocks, where you hang the arm handles Lol. Would the work if it keeps my chest open and back and arms straight?

You know, I'd need to see a picture to just see what your equipment is and where you are set up on your carriage. My arms are crazy longs and they don't need to be straight. They do need to reach into the blocks and your chest needs to be open.
