No one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of their audience. Nowhere is this more apparent than here. This gem got cancelled after 6 episodes simply because the jokes went over people's heads. And it's only gotten worse since. A tragedy.
@tbd-1
@tbd-1 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't just that. You actually had to _watch_ this show and people don't really _watch_ TV at home. Movies in a theater, yes. But at home with all the distractions, not so much.

Being cancelled wasn't all bad. The writers admitted that, at the time, they were running out of jokes.

I’m not surprised. They come at you awfully fast and most of these clips on KZbin I’ve watched multiple times to really appreciate. This show was also filled with numerous tiny detail sight gags that are hard to pick up the first time (like the Police Squad sign on the door that is inverted, or the clocks that change strangely). Arrested Development faced the same hurdles and it always struggled to gain an audience.

We can all comment on individual aspects of how genius this is. But I think we need to respect the fact that this is near perfect comedy. The "twice/once/fell/din skit is, in my opinion, the greatest piece of comedy writing and delivery ever committed to film. I've never seen anything so beautiful in comedy. I pissed myself laughing whilst being amazed at the wit of it and how it was performed deadpan.

And when was the first time you noticed something was wrong? Well, when l first heard the shot, and as l turned, Jim fell. He's the teller, Frank. -What, Jim Fell's the teller? -No, Jim Johnson. -Who's Jim Fell? -He's the auditor, Frank. -He had the flu, so Jim filled in. -Phil who? Phil Din. He's the night watchman, Frank. lf only Phil had been here. Now wait a minute. Let me get this straight. Twice came in and shot the teller and Jim Fell. No, he only shot the teller, Jim Johnson. Fell is ill. Okay, then after he shot the teller, you shot Twice. No, l only shot once. Twice is the hold-up man. -Then l guess l did shoot Twice. -So now you're changing your story. -No, l shot Twice after Jim fell. -You shot Twice and Jim Fell? No, Jim fell first, and then l shot Twice once. -Who fired twice? -Once. He's the owner of the tyre company, Frank. Okay. Wunce is the owner of the tyre company and he fired Twice. -Then, Twice shot the teller once. -Twice. -And Jim fell and then you fired twice. -Once. Okay, all right, that'll be all for now, Miss Decker. Now, we'll need you to make a formal statement down at the station. -Of course. -You've been very helpful. -We think we know how he did it. -Howie couldn't have done it. He hasn't been in for weeks. Not that the execs thought the audiences would be too stupid, the audience were too stupid. Ratings started out decently and declined quickly. The only reasonable answer is that this comedy required the audiences' attention which they were unwilling to give. Today's comedy has the standard setup and payoff. These guys used the shotgun blast approach. Even if you're paying attention, you probably missed something anyhow.

Lots of comments about the funny lines, but there's also a lot that's funny in the background, like the never-ending stretcher in the opening scene.

Hard to believe they only shot six episodes of this show. It’s a classic. My favourite episode is when Drebin goes undercover as a stand up comedian at a ( you guessed it...a comedy club) that is a major drug trafficker.

Mine too. The lame act and the bit where he goes around the audience talking to the punters. When he asks where they are from he always says 'hey, that's my home town!' regardless of where they say. Then he answers the last one with 'hey, that's YOUR home town!'. It kills me every time.

Interesting how Leslie Nielsen went from more serious roles in the earlier part of his career to later a comic actor.

One of the best bits in this episode but not shown on this video is the gunfight between Sally Decker and Drebin. They go back and forth then there is a two-shot. They're only about three feet apart! Hilarious!

No one will ever be able to take his place! Leslie Neilson was absolutely brilliant! And all while being so family friendly!! Which makes it so much more difficult, but so much better in my opinion! No need to scrape the bottom of the humor barrel!

I recently read James Doohan's memoir, "Beam Me Up Scotty". In it he mentions how, as a young actor just starting out on the stage in New York City, she shared his apartment with another young actor, none other then Leslie Nielsen. Later, when Doohan relocated to the Los Angeles area to work on films and TV shows, he stayed for a while with Nielsen and his wife in their home, Leslie having moved out earlier. The thing Doohan says about Nielsen is that he was always a very funny guy, a real live wire, lots of practical jokes, funny sayings, joking around, a very comic sensibility and tendency. Seems that Nielsen was somewhat typecast as a serious actor on account of his voice and appearance, not because of his innate personality or comic tendencies. Reminds me of other actors who started out doing one kind of thing, then becoming famous for something very different and doing ONLY that for a long time, before finally having enough clout (or just time passing) to get back to roles that suited their actual training and background. A couple actors who come to mind are singers and/or dancers who became known as tough guys, and only resumed doing their original schtick again later in their careers, High Jackman, Christopher Walken, etc.
