Kenneth Williams truly was incomparable; without doubt one of the funniest men ever to grace our screens or radio. He was also a longtime panellist on BBC Radio’s ‘Just A Minute”, hosted by Nicholas Parsons. In fact latterly it became his main source of income. Of all his many television interviews, I think his most revealing was that which he gave to journalist Mavis Nicholson in 1974 on Thames TVs ‘Good Afternoon’. Although he was his usual witty self, it was an unusual interview for Williams in that he visibly relaxed and in consequence revealed far more about himself. He even called Mavis Nicholson by her first name, something I don't recall him doing with any other interviewer. I worked for the Beeb in the very early 80s and can confirm that Kenneth Williams was extremely private. Apparently in the event that anyone visiting his flat needed the loo, he kept a pile of pennies to hand and directed them to the nearby public lavatories. (I’ve put a link to the interview with the lovely Mavis Nicholson below) kzbin.info/www/bejne/raqkaJ-dadF7d5I

Kenneth's mother Louisa's ability to impersonate surely rubbed off on her son. To a degree, so did his dad's Charlie's acid tongue: "Do you want to look like a TART? Stick to your own color; you can't improve on nature. You ought to know that; you're OLD enough!" Mercy!! I agree with Kenneth, though, about being glad that certain folks brush their teeth after lunch, lol. I am sorry this unique and talented human being passed on too soon. How beautiful that he could do Shakespeare with Olivier and comedy as well. Footnote: The photograph of Saint Paul's Covent Garden was breathtaking. Of course, I really appreciate the volume of photographs you use in these projects. You are beautiful, smart and talented and we reap the rewards of those.

Thank you so very much for a fascinating conversation. Kenneth was my favourite too. Such a shame about his upbringing. Often it brings out glowing attributes in us and due to the negative pressures placed upon us during our influential years, brings out the worst in us to manage as best we can. As we often see. One of the great things about this platform, you can look up many of Kenneth's appearances on various chat shows over the years. You realise why he was such a popular guest on both TV and radio, what a raconteur and entertainer he was. I caught up with his earlier radio career courtesy of Hancock's half hour on radio 4 extra. I remember his appearances on Jackanory in the 1970s. I believe both his parents were Welsh, if Wikipedia is correct, his dad was from Port Talbot, and his mum was from Pontnewydd. Thanks again Shar.👍🌷

Anyway, if you really want a good laugh over and over again, get my favourite Kenneth Williams book, "The Complete Acid Drops". Thank you so much for that. I really enjoy your videos. Your voice is extremely easy to listen to compared to most youtubers. I've watched Fantabulosa many many times . I found he was 2 different people. When he played straight roles with people like Sir Laurence Olivier , his posh , well spoken , intelligent side came out and when he played roles on radio and with the carry on gang , his comedic side came out as when he was in school. I don't think he liked himself very much which is a shame but when you're in a great deal of pain with a lot of health issues, your view of the world sometimes is one of loneliness and darkness. Well done Shar, as always you didn't sugar coat anything or choose the hatchet job approach, but instead presented a kind, well researched and balanced summary. I met KW in person once. It was in 1983 and quite near to Marchmount St. He was walking down the street coming towards me. I stopped him and said how much I admired his work. He told me to 'f**k off' and fled past me, clearly indignant at my temerity in having stopped him. This brief meeting, which I have never forgotten (and for which I bore no grudge), seems to me to sum up KW perfectly. He needed interaction with others, but only on his own terms. Anything else was an intrusion and not to be tolerated.

Oh thank you so much for sharing this!!! I had heard he could be like that - he did it to a fan who asked for his autograph when out with Peter Butterworth, Janet Brown and their children in Brighton - they were mortified! Like you - were I in that position I wouldn't of held a grudge - I think if I'm going to be honest - I can understand how intrusive it must have felt for him - while some actors enjoy the attention - I think Kenneth only wanted it from afar! or as you say - on his own terms! x

Such a complex man. This episode was so aptly titled ; it would seem he needed complete control of how he was perceived by the Public and his friends. Thanks for bringing us his story .

lovely as ever. What a complex man. Read his diaries and then watched the Film Prick up your ears about his friend Jo Orton. He could be very kind, he would sent money in the post to struggling actors and late in life he suggested to his agent he take less of a fee for doing voiceovers as he felt he was being overpaid !! He hated Fannella Feilding (they were in a play at the time) and when he first met Babs he was his usual waspish self. They were filming Carry On spying and Kenneth had a fake beard. Babs get fed up with his sniping and said "Whats it like wearing Fannellas minge hair on your face" there was a long pause and Kenneth said to the crew "OOOOHHH isnt she just wonderful"
@BeautifulBadandBizarre Жыл бұрын
🤣🤣🤣 yes I knew about that - but sometimes I have to asses do I want to say those words on a video 😂😂😂 I think that was the extreme and the contradiction of Kenneth - he could be so incredibly generous and then hit the absolute depths of nastiness - I think it was when he was with Peter Butterworth and his wife Janet on Brighton seafront that a fan asked for his autograph and he told them to ‘piss off’ 🤭 that poor fan must have been mortified 😬 lol xx

Ah now… the next person is very different from dear Kenneth!!! I hope you will enjoy the video though! I do agree - Kenneth was an amazing character - with an intriguing dark side - like many comedians who bring us such happiness - it appears at a great cost to themselves ❤️

He was a national treasure. He should have been in so many more roles. Such an incredible talent and a dreadful loss. Love him in Carry On Screaming; "Frying Tonight!" His radio work also is a great gift. Highly recommend "Julian and Sandy". One of the greatest English comedians that ever lived. Period.

Remember" Round the Horn" in the 60's when l was a nipper .Broadcast on Sunday afternoons my favourite was Ken's Rambling Sid Rumpole the West Country Yokel and folk singer . His cheeky songs and hilarious play on words ( "Nadgered His Cordwaggles " ) still makes me crease up to this day . Classic British comedy from a classic British comedian .

Very well done. This is a lovely, thoughtful and well-researched tribute. I think even Kenneth would have enjoyed it. One of my most precious memories is of being there when he came to my school to be interviewed. I remember the magical moment he appeared, just a few feet away from me. It was absolutely breathtaking, as was he.

You're very welcome. I've read a lot about Ken, and can tell how much work went into your presentation. I have to pinch myself that I saw him. I was only about 16 at the time, so it had quite an impact. I couldn't compete with my dad, though, who was with me at the time. He saw most of the other Carry On regulars as well over the years: i.e. Sid James, Hattie Jacques, Bernard Bresslaw, Peter Butterworth, Jim Dale, Barbara Windsor. He actually met Bernard. They were at the funeral of a mutual friend, and Bernard came over and spoke to him. What a nice man.
@BeautifulBadandBizarre Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! The reading and research is possibly the most favourite part of making these videos for me - the editing not so much 🤭 Bernard Bresslaw was one of my most favourite Carry On actors! There always seemed to be a genuine kindness about him and it is lovely to hear your dad’s story as it confirms what I’ve previously heard about him ❤️
@ianrichardson8990 Жыл бұрын
Yes, he always came across as a very nice man. A gentle giant. He was one of the few people Ken didn't have a bad word for, as well as being a very fine actor, far better than he's generally given credit for. He was intelligent and very well read too, which would also have appealed to Ken. You'll have to do one about Bernard now 😀.

Thank you so much!!!! I really appreciate you watching xxx yes totally! It seems to be a common situation - I think there was a lot of pressure especially back in Kenneth’s day - when you considered how much they worked it was quite astonishing! They must have been constantly exhausted - which wouldn’t bode well for their private lives xx
