You never fail to inspire me some way in your podcasts. I taught myself to knit from online videos. I'd wanted to learn for many years prior to that, but didn't know any knitters. I'd tried repeatedly to learn from books, but being a visual learner, that was never successful for me. It happened that the teaching video I watched was demonstrated by an English knitter. At the time, I didn't even know there was any other way. Later on, I learned about the Continental style of knitting, but I'd already firmly established my muscle memory into being a thrower. This was frustrating to me, as I realized from watching others on KZbin that picking was much faster than throwing. I tried learning Continental, but it was frustratingly slow, and I hated to think of the time I was wasting that I could be producing! After watching this episode, I have decided that 2021 is the year I will learn to knit Continental! I've got to get through with my Christmas knitting before tackling it, but come January, I'm going to follow your example and schedule myself one full hour each day to work on it. I loved seeing you and your friend, Denise. That looked like great fun, and from what I could see of your new kitchen, it looked awesome!

I am an English knitter and I, too, flick not throw. I am fairly fast with this method. I have tried a million times to learn Continental, but just don't have whatever it takes to move my fingers that way! I have learned over the years to hold both colors in my right hand when I do fair isle. I also took a Portuguese knitting class whereby purling is super easy when knitting stranded color work. I think it would be great to have Denise back on another podcast. I really enjoyed your whole podcast!

Hi Leslie, I was raised an English knitter by my Mom and knit English for 50 + years. I taught myself to knit continental about 6 years ago and have Knit continental ever since. I still use my English knitting at times. It’s especially a gift when doing colourwork as I can easily use both hands. Good for you for persevering!

Wow do I love that Lynn! Thank you for letting me know! Sometimes I feel as if I am still way more comfortable with English but I make better time with Continental now. I bet I continue to blend a little of both just like you! ❤️

I learned to knit english style when I was around twelve from my canadian neighbor who was probably ten at the time and then when I was around eighteen, I met some norwegian friends who taught me continental and I've been knitting that way ever since! I'm now 33 and still not very fast at either method but love knitting and your videos inspired me to start a new project! So I've got a pair of socks in the works while I watch your videos. I think the most exciting thing about knitting is all the new techniques you can learn along the way. I have so much more to learn!!

Love your sharing. I forgot about pumpkin bread. Have got to do this. You and your friend are delightful. Looking forward to seeing more of the acorns.... adorbs. I was taught to English style knit. I learned with color -change -yarn to knit Continental but I dislike my tension somewhat.... you sure do feel it in your hands/ neck. Think the tension is evident to my little dog too as he seems to always sense and becomes needy ( play ball -throw ball please), so tension in air as well. I make hats for my husband and the Grands and have a favorite pattern to use and this seems to work well ( memory muscle).

Hello from Toronto. I love your podcast. I am primarily a Scottish style knitter i,e, I am most comfortable with a long needle tucked under my right arm. However when I knit two handed fair Isle with circular needles I knit continental with my left hand for the contrast colour and English style with my right hand for the main colour. . I’m OK to knit continental for the knit stitch, (although my tension is looser) but the purl stitch eludes me.

Hi there! Thanks so much for your sweet words! I hear ya on the tension... the hardest part! 🥴🧡

I learned continental as child, I'm not sure what purl I learned then, but now I am a continental combination knitter, although I sometimes use the regular purl when knitting back and forth and need the stitches to lay right when doing a decrease. Chocolate chips added to the pumpkin bread batter at the end makes a delicious treat.

I knit and do needlepoint. Thinking about the difference between the English style and continental style in knitting reminds me of the difference between the continental stitch and basketweave stitch in needlepoint. With the continental stitch you stitch in horizontal rows across the canvas. With the basketweave stitch you stitch in diagonal rows up and down the canvas. The continental stitch is easier to learn, but it distorts the canvas. The basketweave stitch takes a lot of practice, but it creates a much sturdier canvas and a more even surface texture. Once you reach the Aha! moment when learning the basketweave stitch, the whole concept falls into place and you'll never look back. I find it to be a relaxing meditative process.

I started crocheting when I was 12, so it only made sense to me to knit continental. I watch a few different styles on KZbin before I found what was more comfortable and clicked for me.

Hi there, I've tried Continental but would find drop stitches....frustrating. I'm sure if I took an hour each day I would learn where I've been goofing up. You are pretty quick with knitting, not sure why the change? Also, I've made 3 scrubbies...yeah!
@LeslieFriend4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheri! YAY! So glad the scrubbie bug bit you! I am STILL making them! ha! As far as the change... just thought so much about it when I made Frida as it is a sweater that is knit almost entirely in rib. I thought if I could knit continental it would be so much easier! 🧡

I'm a continental style knitter - and I do a Norwegian Purl instead of a more conventional Purl. It changed my life and made me so much happier with my projects. I highly recommend trying it. It's the only way I've ever knitted, because I started as a crocheter.

I was taught continental, I try to learn English every now and then for more consistent tension, but it never clicks for me. I feel like I am more efficient continental, so I just really try to pay attention to my tension especially purling. Your lily kate sweater is beautiful!

Very interesting I’m an English knitter but don’t let go of the needle so pretty fast but because of arthritis in thumbs am trying to master continental to have variety but haven’t mastered purl yet the twist is hard to understand. I tried english style but it wasn’t efficient for me so I started knitting in continental style as it seemed more natural to me, a crocheter.

I am a continental knitter. I learned to knit continental 8 years ago after seeing my ex-co-worker knit continental. I watched KZbin and practice. The knit stitch was easy, purl was not. Eventually I got it. The tension will improve with practice. It will be second nature before long! I was an English knitter when I learned how to knit in the six grade. I became an avid knitter ever since I mastered continental! Hope you enjoy knitting continental!! ❤️❤️

I switched to Continental almost exclusively for a few years, but I found my gauge was looser and harder to control... so now I've gone back to English-style and am trying to adjust my movements to be more efficient. Continental is faster for ribbing, though, for sure! It's great to have both skills, especially since I like to do stranded colorwork.

I crochet and wanted to learn to knit and I wanted to learn continental style because I thought it would be easier and faster! And I thought I would catch right on to it! Well it's the hardest thing I've ever done!!! I practiced for a couple of days and my hands hurt terribly! I am a musician and I cant put anymore stress on my hands! I had decided to give up then I just couldn't and I ran across andrea Wong on KZbin teaching Portuguese knitting style.when I saw that I thought YES this is for me! I seen she teaches 3 classes on Portuguese knitting on craftsy and i have belonged to that for years! Anyway i got on there and i am having a ball Portuguese knitting! You only have to flick your left thumb. And pearling is super easy in Portuguese style! So you might want to check that out and craftsy is only 5 dollars right now I think for a whole year

I learned English as a kid but never really knitted. When I picked up knitting as an adult I learned continental from KZbin and love it. I would like to relearn english as I see some do it where their throwing doesn’t have them letting go of the needle to throw.

I’m guessing it’s your purl rows that are looser than your knit rows? Mine are the same, my tension as a continental Knitter is looser than when I was an English Knitter. But now when I finish a purl stitch I give a tiny little tug and that tightens up that stitch as it is coming off the needle and I find my knit and pearl stitches are pretty even now. Maybe you could try that.
@LeslieFriend4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary! YES! Thank you so much! I will try that! xx🧡
