We're looking at a Less than 20K Miles Survivor 1969 Oldsmobile Hurst / Olds in White & Gold Paint. The car features the factory 455 CI H.O V8 engine and a dual gate shifter.
The car's Owner is Fred Mandrick. Fred’s had this car since 2008. He shares he’s had over 50+ Oldsmobile’s and this one being an original car with less then 20,000 original miles is why he had to have it.
ENJOY!

I remember being 10 years old and picking up a paper route that included a large apartment complex with numerous buildings and parking lots to it. That is where my love affair with muscle cars started. In these parking lots introduced me to a Corvette Stingray, Olds 442, SS Chevelle, Challenger, Grand Prix SJ to name a few. On one weekend the owner of the 442 had his friend over with his 69 Hurst Olds that looked identical to this one. They saw me gawking/hanging around, talked to me about their cars, opened the hoods, finishing with tires up in smoke just for my inspiration. Memories of a 10 year old kid in the early 70s. Thanks Lou.

Lol, my grandsons 1966 Buick Skylark was in most respects a better car than the Chevelle. Although among his high school peers in the late 1970s it was just ho-hum. But he always thought of it as a "really cool Chevelle". Later in life he realized how right he was.

@@20alphabet When I was in high school (69-72), the “cool” cars were Mustangs, Camaro SSs, Firebird 400s, Nova SSs, Malibu SSs, GTOs, 442s, ‘Cuda’s, Challengers, Chargers, and Road Runners. If you were looking for something “different”, you might have an AMC Javelin or AMX.
@20alphabet
@20alphabet 3 жыл бұрын
@@Primus54 Lol, those were indeed the "cool cars" but high schoolers couldn't afford them. Sure there'd be that one kid who's dad would buy him something like that, but most would get what they could afford or a hand-me-down from a family member and soup it up. The Skylark had the 340 with a 2-speed Powerglide and a 2bbl carburetor. By recurving the distributor, re-jetting the carburetor, and increasing the single exhaust pipe .5" with the appropriate muffler it became a very spritely ride.

My 1st car was a 1968 Olds 442 that I bought in 1969 with 18000 miles. It had these chips in the paint on the lower dash. Later I realized ( I was an 18 year old kid working 12 hours a day 6 days a week at Strathmore Paper factory) that the chips aligned with the 2nd to 3rd power shift so violent that it chipped the paint. It was a 400ci. Never had a problem other than the miserable Quadrajet 4 barrel which was junk. When I got drafted I sold it to a friend who has it to this day. In basic trainng for the Army we used to say in cadence, "Ain't no use in looking back. Jodi has your Cadillac. Ain't no use in feeling blue. Jodi has your girl friend too."

Hi Lou, great Hurst/Olds! I think the most striking aspect of the car is your opening segment where the car is a beast, juxtaposed against the final segment where you could have been riding in a garden variety Cutlass Supreme. That was the magic of the Hurst/Olds, almost a Jekyll and Hyde persona. It’s really cool that the owner is willing to drive and show off the performance of this super rare car.

Hi, Lou! The Hurst/Olds had a rather sporadic history, actually coming and going no less than four times. It first appeared for 1968-1969, then reappeared for 1972 when it served as the Indy pace car, and a small number of replicas were sold by Olds dealers that year. It continued with the restyled "Colonnade" Cutlass body from 1973 to 1975 (with the '74 serving as another pace car), disappeared again, then saw a brief revival in 1979, a year after the Cutlass was downsized. The final Hurst/Oldses were made in 1983-1984. You're right about Fred's car being a real time capsule. I think its great when people get to see any car as the folks who drove them back in their day remember them. The first generation Toronado was still in production at that time, and all late-Sixties Oldsmobiles seemed to have at least a little bit of the Toronado in them, particularly in the front fender details. I find the shifter details on Fred's car particularly interesting too. Incidentally, our 2014 ISWC convention had a Hurst-equipped 1969 Cutlass wagon in attendance. The owner's father bought it new and personally ordered it with the Hurst shifter, and the owner doesn't know of any others that had one. Thanks to you and Fred for taking us on this amazing Hurst ride! 455 CU...L8R! P.S. 13:44 MEEP! MEEP! BTW, that is the state bird for Fred's neighbors in New Mexico.

She's a beauty, 69 H/O has been my favorite dream car since I had my first 69 cutlass back in 86. That's a nicely optioned car , tinted glass on a non ac car with power brakes and steering . I've had a chance to talk to several original owners of 69 H/O and to stories stood out to me. From the guy who had to take the Olds dealer to a rail car to prove to him that it was a thing so he could order his, to the first one I saw in real live. Sitting in a field with signs ( trespassers will be shot ) I had to hope the fence to get a better look and got to meet the owner. 69 yr old lady who had bought it new and only drove it about 1000 miles a year at that point .it had about 69,000 miles on it and needed a restoration but was still all there. Great memories , nice car!!!

I love these Oldsmobiles. I had a 70 Cutlass SX 455 2 barrel and a 70 442 350 4 barrel. When I bought the 442 there was a 69 442 that was for sale also. I considered it but settled on the 1970 442. I do like the 69's though, and especially the Hurst versions...

Openers like that should be mandated or even womandated. My dad's '67 F-85 stripdown 4-door with the 6-banger was painted that same ivory color. That's probably the best-looking rear end year for the Cutlass line-up. No other division had a more elegant design for '69 on their intermediates, methinks

I remember a guy one of these that was silver with trumphet bugle exhaust. Sadly it stopped running and he parked it. Then his nephew fresh from the service bought it from his Uncle.. The nephew drove it but it was in badly need of repair. Then one day it was gone. Same model at the one in this video with the wing on the back. I recently saw one a friend had but it was automatic on the collar with side moldings. Not sure they came like that. But it’s badges say 442. But still a beautiful car but needed to be restored. But back in the day the muscle when you spot them, you just stare in disbelief that at one time it wasn’t about the safety features it was about thunder meets the road and the tail lights as the vanished from sight.. Goodday Lou, Absolutely brilliant, you know I am the biggest Oldsmobile fan in Australia, my next die cast is this particular model. The original Hemi Slayer, 2 years before Chevy, Poncho or Buick were putting BB in the intermediate models. Considering there were more than 900 sold Oldsmobile knew there was a neche for a BB intermediate A Body GM's & they delivered in spades. Any chance of a 1968 W 31 Ram Rod in the arsenal in Arizona. Absolutely gorgeous, fantastic. Your number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤

That throaty burble really sells this car. I'm not a fan of that fastback styling. I was shocked at how radical it seemed when they came out with it in 1968. Most years Olds featured notchback styling in the Cutlass/442 lineup, which I prefer. Still, this car is special and the fastback styling suits it.

Hi Lou, thank you for one more great video! And those screaming sounds will not let the driver fall asleep! :) I like this car. I always had a question, why they come up with this Brand's name Oldsmobile? I am sure this car looked very contemporary at that time. The name of this brand reminds me of the name of the bank in my area: Old Second Bank! If I had the power to rename this brand I would call it CoolMobile.
