When you subscribe it is FREE. Click on the bell and you will be notified when I upload a new tutorial.
If you liked it please click on the Thumbs up icon under the video.
VERY IMPORTANT.... Some subscribers have told me they are not getting notification of when I upload a new video. KZbin has been working on this issue. I am pleased to inform all my subscribers that if you click on the bell at the right side of the red subscription button, you should receive a notification from KZbin that I will be uploading something new on a particular day and time.
I will only be putting up notifications once or twice a month.
One advantage of doing this on my channel is that when I premier a new video you have the opportunity to chat with me as well if you wish.
For FAQ go to my web site www.sudokuguy.com
This "outside the puzzle technique " is one of the most important procedures needed to go on to more difficult puzzles. Whenever you have 3 or more empty cells in a row, column or block use this technique. If you wish to use your memory, and not put the numbers outside the puzzle, you are welcome to do so. Warning, it may be a challenge as you go to harder puzzles.
NEW you can now go to my web site and see an INDEX OF VIDEOS under strategy headings. Click on the number and it will take you to the video of interest. www.sudokuguy.com
This is important for those who speak another language.
You can turn on captions and have them automatically translated into the language of your choice.
At the bottom of each video click on the cc in a little square then click on the settings gear next to the cc on the right. Here you are able to select the language of your choice so you can read the captions at the bottom of the video in your chosen language.

I have now watched up to Lesson 12. I have been doing Sudoku for awhile now and so I have figured out a number of the strategies you teach on my own. BUT, I am having so much fun learning the subtleties you teach within each technique. You are such an amazing teacher!! My mom has attended a number of your classes and I can see why she kept going back for more! Thank you for sharing your brilliance and talent!!

Boy did I need this lesson. I could get so far on more difficult puzzles but at a certain point I’d guess, because I was tired and sometimes would take a break from completing the puzzle, come back and maybe see a couple of things I’d missed. I suppose it shouldn’t matter I look at the clock and it’s been 40 min or so on a puzzle.

Robbin if you write on glass facing the camera. Then when you upload the video by flipping the mirror image left to right & visa versa the audience will then be able to see the numbers exactly as you wrote them and you wont have to talk with your back to the audience. You will be facing them & they will see the numbers as you write them. You can see this approach used in the 'NancyPi' MIT grad maths videos

Watched this about a year ago and really liked your 'outside numbering' strategy. It's a bit messy so I decided to do this in my head. To get good at it, I bought a paperback super easy Sudoku puzzle book and practiced solving them only with 'outside numbers' - only in my head though! ..I've gotten pretty good at seeing at a glance what's missing.

Glad it was helpful! Tom. This outside the puzzle was for learners. With experience you should be able to do without numbers just using your memory, however when you get to do the diabolical very difficult puzzles then you will need to put small numbers in the cells as there are many tricks you can use to solve using this system Look at tutorial 79 and up and you will see what I mean Robin Thanks for sharing.

I suggest you look at empty squares as least as often as you go through the numbers. That way you would have found the blank square in the middle row (237_18946) could only be 5 shortly after placing the 8 (26:26). Having placed the 5 you would then solve the 25 pair on the top row immediately. And so on. Blanks as much as numbers!

You are right. I am establishing a procedure. With more experience by all means if you see an empty cell and know which number goes by all means go ahead. In my tutorials I point this out even before starting the procedure.

So at 10:45 you talk about how there is no more cross checking. If we take the block on the left there is a 9. when that 9 goes across it makes only two cell have a 9 in the middle right block in the Left middle and the right middle. Using that they are both in a row then you can get that there is only two 9 in the center block top left and top right. So My question is there a method to catch those numbers?
@SudokuGuy

Yes there is but it requires you to continue on solving using my procedure and eventually it will resolve for you.

how does outside the puzzle help and specific reason?
@SudokuGuy
@SudokuGuy 7 жыл бұрын
Good Question. This technique is VERY valuable as it helps you find numbers in 3 or more empty cells in a row column or block. As you go further in the course you will come across this many times. I use it for ALL puzzles when they get harder. Putting the numbers outside the puzzle helps to remember what small and large can go into a cell. Some players just remember them in their head, but I find learners prefer "Outside the puzzle" to begin with. Hang in there. U can do it!

How can you now that that 89 can only go in that specific cell? 89 could jsut as well be in the middle cell of the bottom block right? Thanks in advance to who ever replies :)
@SudokuGuy

the 289 refers the numbers missing in the column . they go in the cell where they will not cause a number to be repeated in a row or block. I hope I have understood you correctly.

@@SudokuGuy Thanks for your answer :) What I'm not getting is that at 17.10 in the video you say that we now know for a fact that there can only be an 89 in that cell where you put the underlined 89. In my mind that 8 could also go in the cell third from the bottom of that same column. I can't figure out how you come to "knowing" that that 8 will be there.. Appreciate your time :)

Hi Robert You are right ...it is messy particularly if your grid is small.There are books by Will shortz that have only one grid per page. I print off large sheets with a grid on them. You will find that as you progress with more difficult puzzles you will need to add small possible numbers.unless you have a great memory. Even the chanpions use small numbers. When you can't hear that voice to solve the situation you find yourself in its time to go back and watch another video. Gradually the approaches will be come automatic but I still catch myself talking to myself just like Robbin when I am stuck. Its a good approach and very professionally taught.

you missed the LHS matching 2 pairs twice and the 6's in the bottom middle box which couldnt take another so it was not threes but pairs to note not exactly out of the box I like your thoroughness but it slows you down terrifically and too much annotation Most people dont have the benefit of whiteboard markers and have to use pen or pencil and eraser Your eyes can flit round the board much quicker than doing the beginners 1-9 counting in only one plane at a time. The answer appears to be to not stand so close to the board and miss so many glaringly obvious pairs Sorry its so easy to spot some things when you are just observer. lol
