I have been playing sudoku for the last 10 years, doing hit and trials and was always wondering if there is a systematic way of solving the puzzles . I just watched one of your tutorial on you tube and it answered all my queries and watched many later. You reminded me of my mathematics teacher who taught me maths. some 55 years ago . You are a very good teacher. PREM ARORA

Starting at 10:12, you show the 'trick' of using the three pre-filled numbers lined up in a block to rule out placement of 7. I am still trying to wrap my head around all of these techniques. I think so, but just want to hear from the master, that if you have written in the three numbers, it works the same. Also, thank you for repeating this trick over in multiple videos since I did not really get it the first time. A special HUGE thank you for your step by step approach!
@SudokuGuy6 жыл бұрын
The 7 has to go where I put it because if you put the 7 in the other possible cell there is NO ROOM for it in block 9 due to each cell being already filled using LCR ie 513. Check out lesson 5 Hope this helps.

Just after 3:10, you state that the 1 and 5 in the centre block are a matching pair, but a 3 could also go in the right-hand cell of the two. Only if you checked column 9 (which can't hold a 5 or 9) can you be sure they're a matching pair, but you hadn't done this yet. How can you be certain that the 1 and 5 are a matching pair? What am I missing?
@SudokuGuy6 жыл бұрын
Good question. i'm not sure whether you have had a look at lesson 1-12. I talk a lot about TMB (Top middle bottom) If you are not sure about this I suggset you go back to lesson 1. However they MUST be only 1 and 5 because of both numbers have the Top Middle Bottom patterns i.e they both have a M (middle missing). Yes a 3 could go there but the I and 5 take over as there are only 2 empty cells where they can go. Hope this helps
@IssuetheQuietus6 жыл бұрын
What I was getting at was how you quickly discounted the fact that a 3 - the other number missing from that row - could go in the right-hand box, and knew that the 1 and 5 were a matching pair. However, I've watched it again, and what I was missing was the fact that both 1 and 5 can ONLY go in these two squares, so whichever number goes in one of the boxes, the other box is automatically filled too, so nothing else can go in them. Thank you, your videos are great. =)

I took a break from watching your videos and went back to just solving puzzles to consolidate my learning. After checking each number for rows & columns and then deducing or eliminating those possibilities that could NOT exist (because another square would only allow the number in a given row or column) I found that this technique became really useful once I had reached about the halfway point in the game as you have to have quite a few numbers in the rows columns or squares already. For example: If you happen to have three blank squares in a particular row column or square then two of them are going to be matching pairs and most times you can see which square does NOT contain the matching pair and "Voila!" (as Sudoku Guy says) "...you have found yourself another number".

Hi Martin. I understand why you have added a place where new material is covered. As a teacher I deliberately repeat as some (particularly beginners) but not all players take a while to learn technqiues and procedures. Also there are players who think they don't need to look at the beginners lessons. Repeating helps those players. 😉

Xavier Gisz Xavier I appreciate your comment. If you look at my latest tutorial you will see that if you did a cross/meet technique on the 3 in the middle horizontal block you could solve all the threes in that set of horizontal blocks. I did not do this technique as I wanted to show more effectively the concept of "there's only one place the number 1 can go." There are many techniques you can use to solve a puzzle. Hang in there.

I did the puzzle before you went through it and spotted your 'deliberate' mistakes. Reminded me of being in a pantomine and shouting out "He's behind you" as you kept missing the clues. But the good thing is that your method of teaching works because I found it easy to solve and even though you missed some of the clues the methodology won out in the end if you stick to the process.

There is something strange going on. This puzzle has two solutions. If you replace the string "2 3 8" in the centre block of line 6 with the string "8 3 2", and replace the string "8 7 2" in the centre block of line 7 with the string "2 7 8", you get an equally valid solution. I didn't spot this myself, but the online app Soduko Solver promptly informed me.

Sometimes when you solve a particular cell the ramifications explode all over the grid and it is easy to miss a clue or follow a particular path. I have just come back to watch this video and can see that Sudoku Guy is really teaching an approach that if followed will lead to solving the puzzle even if a few clues are missed. I spotted a number of places where certain cells could have been solved but it didn't really matter because they were picked up as other numbers got eliminated or solved. Once you 'cracked' the first half of the puzzle 'technically' it gets easier to solve but it is still important to test your logic carefully at each step. This is where matching pairs & 'only one place where it can go' become so important. Especially when you have no more that four empty cells in a particular block, row or column. It is very easy to make silly mistakes towards the end but if I follow Sudoku Guy's reasoning as I check through the final cells I am more likely to successfully complete the puzzle.

Hello Robin, Could You, Robin, explain, what is the difference (or similarity) between the type of pairs You use a lot the powerful 'matching pairs' and the types of pairs described in the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGKVZHiLh9moaas (naked pair, pointing pair, claiming pair, hidden pair). I understand that they are all pairs, which give You some possibilities to elimininate the same candidates in some blocks, rows or columns in the puzzle. However the fundamental basis, why the word 'matching pair' is used is not quite clear to me.
@SudokuGuy7 жыл бұрын
The matching pair simply means 2 cells have the same possible 2 numbers. I suggest you look at all my lessons and tutorial where I show the power of this situation in solving. When you solve one number of a matching pair then you can solve the other number of the matching pair. I hope this helps.
@arimyllyniemi84457 жыл бұрын
I have looked at all Your lessons, but still there is an issue. Maybe You didn't have time enough to follow the link I gave You: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGKVZHiLh9moaas, and to see which terms is used of different kinds of pairs there (?) The terms, which are normally used in other Sudoku lessons (naked pair, pointing pair etc.) and the term 'matching pair' are confusing. Is it ok, if I say that 'matching pair' is equal to 'naked pair' ? Thank You for the very informative, logical and humorous lessons, which I have been enjoying of - every single of them. I hope all the lessons in the world would be like Yours. Even I would be a lot wiser today.

Hi Ari, sorry I have not got back to you. I have been away. I looked at your video. Well done. Your description of different types of matching pairs is academic but accurate. If you look at my lessons and tutorials you will find that I cover what you have mentioned in your video. There are many other tricks and patterns to watch for. Today I did a difficult puzzle and spotted several Danger Danger situations. This helped me to solve the puzzle. Lets Keep in touch. We are all in this game together and I don't mind sharing.

Hello again Robin, I have to thank You again for giving Your enjoyable lessons to all of us for free ! I also have to admit that I am not the right person to deserve any favour about the more academic channel of Sudoku: kzbin.info/door/rowx1RqiPhsg0LLUAWKObg . The real 'owner' of this channel is the mysterious 'RFC963'. I think both of the channels (Yours in a pragmatic way, and RFC963's in a theoretical way) have given valuable information and understanding about the logic and basics of solving these hooking Sudoku puzzles - in practise ;)
